Chickenque and Fair Time will soon be upon us, so there s no stopping now! We couldn t be any more thankful for all of the volunteers that put in countless hours to help organize and run these events in order to really make the best better! Thank you so much to Sara Glashan, her I&R committee and all of the leaders and members for bringing us another fun and amazing Presentation Day! Good luck at Sectional Presentation Day, we know you ll do Sonoma County proud! All-Star and Rising Star applications have been turned in, and we couldn t be more excited for selecting the teams for the term. Stay tuned for the selection day schedule! Please don t forget that Fashion Revue applications are due March 18 th, and we look forward to seeing your creativity flow on April 9 th! A big thank you to Naomi Edwards and her committee for working so hard to put all of this together! Chickenque is right around the corner! Tickets will be given out at the Chickenque Rep meeting and we ask everyone to help make this best one ever! Please encourage your projects to bring a booth to the Chickenque and have the opportunity to showcase all the many things we do in our great program. We are looking forward to see all the new activities! Don t forget to order your special Chickenque Amanda Schell T-shirts - ordering time is limited! ChickenQue Poster contest reminder: everyone should be holding their club contests in March and make sure the winners get to Council meeting in April! Please be sure to keep all of the upcoming events and due dates on your calendar. Time flies by so quickly and we d hate for anyone to miss out! 2 PAGE 2 SONOMA COUNTY 4-H REPORTER MARCH 2016 SONOMA COUNTY PRESENTATION DAY A big thank you to Sara Glashan and her committee of Naomi Edwards, Diana Hampton and Nicole Gersley for conducting another great year of Presentation Day. Also thank you to the All Stars, Matt Schafer and all of the judges, room hosts and helpers who assisted. This was a great event and would not be possible without all of the volunteer time that went into planning and conducting it. All of the youth who presented did an incredible job. This event really showcases the core of our 4-H our program. Public speaking is the one of the skills that leads to self-confidence and contributes to self-esteem. Please consider joining the event committee next year and all leaders and parents should encourage their youth to give a presentation! Attention all Sonoma County Presentation Day Gold Medal Recipients! Congratulations again on a job well done! Below is the link now active to register for Sectional Presentation Day! The Event is March 26th at UC Davis, and the entry deadline is March 2, 2016 by 10 pm. You will find the entry information for Presentations, Primary events, Interview contest all on the page the link takes you to. Also consider volunteering to be an Evaluator, Room Host, Runner, etc. SECTIONAL PRESENTATION DAY I would also like to remind everyone that the scoring will be different at Sectionals than at the County level. Please be sure to review the scoring sheet in the current Presentation Day Manual to see that awards are given based on a tighter range of points...that means you still have to practice, practice, practice! You'll need more points to earn the same Gold Medals! So keep up the great work and get registered to be part of the next big event, Sectional Presentation Day! Best to you all, Sara Glashan, County Presentation Day Chair FASHION REVUE INFORMATION Saturday April 9th, H Center in Rohnert Park Sonoma County 4-H Fashion Revue is a fun opportunity for Sonoma County 4-H members to show off the knowledge, skills and creativity they have used to create and present their various clothing or textile related projects. 3 PAGE 3 SONOMA COUNTY 4-H REPORTER MARCH 2016 C.A.L. CONFERENCE H C.A.L. (Create a Leader) Conference is an annual, interactive leadership conference for middle-school age and older. This year over 20 attendees from Sonoma County attended the conference on the last weekend of January, held at Walker Creek Ranch in Marin County. Seven of the Sonoma County 4-H youth were on staff, gaining additional leadership skills and experience. The conference consisted of keynote speakers and 5 workshops through which the youth rotated. The workshops included, Money management, dressing for success, parliamentary procure, hands-on science/engineering/technology and the always popular Saturday night dance! The Sonoma County team, got together a week before the conference, to have an orientation and participate in some team building activities. Thank you to our volunteers and chaperones who made this possible. For many students, this is the first overnight conference in their 4-H career. Parents are always happy to drop them off, knowing that they will be in good hands, a learning environment and have the opportunity to make new friends. CAL Conference is a great opportunity to build and improve leadership skills and make friends at the same time. Middle school is a transitional time for many youth. Facilitating the adoption of healthy behaviors by youth, helps to ensure a healthy transition into adulthood.

4 PAGE 4 SONOMA COUNTY 4-H REPORTER MARCH 2016 SUITCASE COLLECTION D o you have suitcases that are just taking up space in your closet, garage or attic? You can now give them to a good cause! The Sonoma Valley 4-H Leadership project is collecting suitcases (large and small) for the children of the Valley of the Moon Children s Center (VMCC) now through April 30 th. The VMCC is located in Santa Rosa and is Sonoma County s only 24-hour emergency shelter for children ages newborn through 17 who are victims of abuse, abandonment, neglect, or whose parents/guardians are unable to care for them. VMCC serves about 400 children annually. The suitcases are used for when the children leave the Children s Home for placement in a foster home or with relatives. This helps the kids to leave with dignity instead of having to use bags or boxes to move their belongings. Although any size suitcase works, the larger ones are the favorites as the kids can pack a lot of stuff in them. You can drop off suitcases at Larson Family Winery seven days a week from 10am-5pm, or leave in front of tasting room, or call (707) for a pick up. They can also be brought to the March and April CCC meetings and will be delivered to Sonoma Valley 4-H Leadership from there. Thank you! CAMPING CONFERENCE he California 4-H Camping Advisory Committee invites you to attend the 2016 Camping Conference. Filled with enlightening workshops, engaging activities, and new ideas, this 3-day getaway T is a great opportunity to improve your camping programs and meet others who are just as passionate about camp as you are! Our Keynote Speaker, Dr. Jim Cain, is an industry leader in teambuilding and adventure education. Plus, experienced 4-H staff, volunteers, and youth from around the state will be facilitating workshops such as Nature Activities the Rock, When Stuff Hits the Fan, Astronomy, Compliance Made Easy, and much more! State Leaders Forum takes place on November 11-13, 2016 Registration opens on April 1 STATE LEADERS FORUM Mark your calendars to attend the final State Leaders' Forum for a couple of years. Come to Sonoma County and the Flamingo Hotel in Santa Rosa to expand your tool box when working with young people. The committee is motivated to create an enlightening experience for you. Scintillating speakers, first class workshops, and clever activities highlight the never-ending quest to ensure you will have monumental memories. 5 PAGE 5 SONOMA COUNTY 4-H REPORTER MARCH 2016 SHOOTING SPORTS WORKSHOP Date: March 13-16, 2016 Location: Safety First Shooting Association in Winton, CA P lans are underway to host a 4-H Shooting Sports Western Heritage Workshop in California. It will be held at the Safety First Shooting Association in Winton, CA (Merced County). Those who pass the certification training will be certified to lead a 4-H Western Heritage project. There are pre-requisites for the course listed on the application. In appreciation and recognition of this special 54 year relationship we want to give back to the Fairgrounds by holding a workday. The work day would be at the fairgrounds on March 5th Our workday will start at 9:00am and conclude at 12:00 with BBQ provided by the fair. Online volunteer sign ups will be available soon.
