1 CITIZENSHIP LEADERSHIP LIFE SKILLS California 4-H Youth Development Program UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA COOPERATIVE EXTENSION SONOMA COUNTY 4-H REPORTER November 2011 President s Article What an amazing job our All Stars and their advisors did with Achievement Night! The night was filled with recognitions of our outstanding members, leaders and community partners! I was so proud of what Sonoma County 4-H Clubs do for our community and how involved they all are with making the clubs and communities a better place to live! Outstanding job! Congrats and thank you to our All Stars Genevieve, Erin, Jesse & Ben as well as their Advisors Karyn and Cheryl! Just a reminder to clubs to get your enrollment in to the 4-H office on time. With the reduced staff we will be working hard to keep everything up to date as quickly as possible. We hope to have it run smoothly but if you have any problems, please call Judy or I and we will try to work through any problems. We thank everyone for their support and patience! The Salvation Army has again asked us to participate with their bell ringing during the holiday season. My club has been doing this for the last few years and I cannot tell you what a great experience it is for all of us. It is wonderful to see our 4-H members interact with the general public to help another agency while promoting the 4-H program. I encourage you all to consider becoming involved. We will be having someone from Salvation Army come to the November CCC meeting if you are interested in more information. I want to wish everyone a very wonderful Thanksgiving holiday! Enjoy family, friends and traditions. Also, a reminder there will be NO CCC MEETING IN DECEMBER We will see everyone January 3 rd 2012 at the 4-H Center in Rohnert Park. -Diana Inside this issue: State Leaders Forum 2 C.A.L Conference 2 Project Leaders 2 Service Learning 3 Pygmy Goats 3 Dairy Goats 3 Consumer Field Day 3 Camp Steering Comm. 4 Jr. Master Gardener 4 Presentation Day 4 Orientations 5 Primary Members 5 COTS 5 Upcoming Events 6 Mark Your Calendars... 2 Page 2 UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA COOPERATIVE EXTENSION 2011 State Leaders With the H year soon upon us it s time to start plans for the upcoming 4-H year. As members of the 2011 State Leaders Forum Committee, we hope those plans include State Leaders Forum at the beautiful Asilomar location on November 11-13, More specifically, our hope is that you will help us support this educational and networking opportunity for 4-H Leaders by helping us offset costs of the event by assisting with donations for the Silent Auction. The SLF Silent Auction helps to defray some of the costs of State Leaders Forum, offers the opportunity to showcase and share some of your county s offerings, allows leaders throughout the state to sample items from another location in this wonderful state, is tax deductible and is an exciting part of SLF. tive of all that makes your county the wonderful place it is. Local non-perishable items making up county baskets are always hot items on the Silent Auction tables. Baskets usually include 5-10 items and have a value of $50 or more. If you collect items with a dollar amount greater than $100 you might consider splitting it into more than one basket. The SLF 2011 Silent Auction Committee is hoping to get donations of "County Baskets' from all counties in the state as well as individual, "Club" and "Project" based baskets. C.A.L Creating a Leader Leadership Training Conference. This year's conference is titled "Where Leaders are Discovered!" The conference will be held on January 27, 28, & 29, 2012 at Walker Creek Ranch, Marin County. This is a conference for interested 4-H youth 11 years or 6th grade - 12th grade. The allocation for each county is 15 spaces for youth. All counties are required to send one chaperone for up to 8 youth per gender. Participants are required to send their registration packets and a $25.00 checks deposit (made out to Sonoma County 4-H Council) to the County 4-H office by November 30, After due date, you will notified of total cost. See your club leader for an application or call the 4-H office for a copy. A leader leads by example, whether he intends to or not -John Quincy Adams Project Leaders We would like to encourage all of our project leaders to set up their meeting dates and times this month and share them with your families. Everyone is very busy and letting our families know when, where and what time the dates of their meetings will help to reduce confusion and frustrations on everyone s part. It is so easy to think that we will get to it and life happens! Our 4-H Program feels that project are the key to a successful 4-H experience. We are always so impressed by the variety of projects offered and the creative project leaders who develop these experiences for our youth. We would also like to encourage parents to attend monthly club meetings so they can keep informed on upcoming activ- PLEASE BRING ONE ITEM TO NOVEMBER CCC mtg if possible. Each county is requested to donate one or more County Baskets featuring items you feel are representaities throughout the county. It is also important to support your project leaders through volunteering to help them when needed and to respect their time by having your members to the meetings on time and picking them up promptly at the end of the meetings. Together our leaders and parents can create a wonderful learning environment for our young people.

3 SONOMA COUNTY 4-H REPORTER Page 3 Service Learning Opportunity for Poultry Members Do you want to learn what goes into putting on a poultry show? Did you know that shows are typically hosted by volunteers to support the ongoing development of quality animals? This supports agriculture and our economy. The Cloverdale Citrus Fair poultry show needs a few youth to help with its annual Poultry show on Saturday, February 18, H members who are 9 years and older and in a poultry project can help set up the show learning how coops are assembled and classes arranged on Friday evening. A few older members (14 and older) are needed on Saturday during the show to help exhibitors coop in, clerk for the judge, and run the showmanship competition. Finally, help with clean up is also needed. In addition to learning more about exhibiting poultry competitively you earn credit for your Record Book for a multi-county event and a special thank you gift! Those who help may still exhibit their birds and participate in showmanship. Interested? Contact Kelly Hinde at or at hindekelly@gmail.com Are you interested in Dairy Goats? Come join our county-wide Dairy Goat project. Meetings are held on the third Wednesday of the month. Our next meeting is November 16th from 6:30 to 8:00 pm. Learn about the different goat breeds, feeding requirements, etc. For information contact: Karen Clemmer with Forestville 4-H at kmclemmer@att.net Heidi Dieffenbach-Carle with Penngrove 4-H at hdieffenbach-carle@comcast.net County Wide Pygmy Goat Project The County Wide pygmy Goat project is about ready to begin! Everyone that is interested in learning and showing Pygmy Goats are welcome whether you already own a pygmy Goat or are just starting out. Our first meeting will be on November 15th at Wilson School in Petaluma at 6pm. We will plan additional meetings that night. Lisa Robbins Binkie899@aol.com Please come join us for this year s North Central Section Consumer Science Field Day. The event will be held on November 5, 2011 at the San Joaquin County Robert J. Cabral Agricultural Center, 2101 E. Earhart Ave., in Stockton.
