1 Pyrford Church of England Primary School Good morning. 24 March 2017 In this week s newsletter: School Funding Easter Eggs Easter Fun Days Golden Book Sainsbury Active Kids Marie Curie Co-op Community Fund Diary Dates & next year s term dates Fairthorne Manor Mother s Day prayers Reading Workshop Swimming News Parenting Puzzle Mum s Football I do hope that parents are all safe after the tragedies that hit London this week. I know from yourselves and your children that a number of you were detained under lock down procedures in a number of offices in and around Parliament. The school has also been keen to check that our lock down policy is fully up to date. We do not actively drill the children for lock down as we do not want to cause unnecessary alarm, however I would like to make parents aware that the school does have a policy and that procedures are known and tested by staff in the event that they should ever need to be used. Equally, the school has evacuation procedures in event of fire and emergency and these are tested regularly. As part of our working week, the fire alarms are tested every Monday morning at 8am, as well as intermittent times during the school day and beyond. A letter and statement have been issued this week to all English MPs, on behalf of Surrey s Heads and colleagues working in 14 regions across the country. Speaking with one voice, Heads who serve over 1.5 million pupils in 3500 schools, are urging politicians to recognise shared grave concerns about current and future spending proposals made by the Department for Education. This, coupled with the recruitment crisis in teaching, is making our jobs as school leaders ever more challenging. The facts and rhetoric are listed overleaf for you to read. I know some Surrey parents have been informed of the possibility of going to a four day week for pupils - I want to reassure Pyrford parents that we are not in this situation at this stage and are very fortunate to have the dedicated staff that we have, as well as very supportive governors and parents. We have had a number of trips and visits taking place over the last few weeks, for which I am grateful to all those who give up their time freely to enable our pupils to engage in these great activities. Last week, Year 5 had a fantastic time at Fairthorne Manor and have been regaling me with great stories of fun and adventure. They were, however, very subdued (also known as still tired!) during lessons on Monday morning. They are also being treated to a visit to Christ's College, Guildford next week to see a production of Billy Elliot. Year 6 were at Woking Football Club today engaging in the Junior Citizen programme, learning about all aspects of being a good citizen and keeping safe. Today children have come to school in something red in honour of Comic Relief. Thank you in advance for all your donations - we shall let you know how much we have collected. We received a thank you letter this week from Child Autism UK, a small, local charity to whom we donated 1000 in memory of Mrs Edis. The money is being put directly to fund a helpline for parents. The helpline is for parents with newly diagnosed children with ASD. Further contributions have also been given to Autism UK in memory of Mrs Edis for which the charity were very grateful indeed and they have promised to keep in touch with Mr Edis and the school. Please visit for further info or ring the helpline if you need any help at all. Mrs McCarthy-Wicks who teaches with us for two days a week, will sadly be leaving us at Easter as she relocates with her young family to Birmingham. We wish her luck with her move and thank her for her work here over the last couple of years. Mrs Burningham who currently works in the school will be picking up her teaching commitment. FULL TIME TEACHING ASSISTANT REQUIRED see the school website for more details and an application form Next week is Science Week, promising lots of exciting activities. My thanks to Miss Adams for leading on this and for all the parents who have volunteered to help. The term ends this Friday 31st March and school will close to pupils at 1.30pm, reopening on Tuesday 18th April. Parents are warmly invited to join our end of term Easter church service at the Church of the Good Shepherd at 9.30am on the last day of term. Wishing you all a good weekend. Kathryn Krynicki Headteacher
2 The facts SCHOOL FUNDING Over the life of this Parliament, schools across the country are facing a cut in their budgets in real terms of some 8%. This is resulting in staffing cuts, increased class sizes, reduced numbers of teaching and support staff, cuts to essential support services and restrictions to the depth and breadth of the curriculum offer. Heads are faced with extremely difficult choices which have an impact at the very heart of teaching and learning in schools. The dire financial situation may even result in some schools being forced to contemplate a reduced school week, including the very real possibility of Surrey schools moving to a 4 day week. We live in austere times and recognise the need to address inefficiency and maximise value for money across the school system. Surrey s Heads are proud to have sustained outstanding provision despite reduced funding year on year. However, many Heads have cut costs to the bone, have no access to surplus funds and are now being forced to consider more extreme cuts and set deficit budgets. The rhetoric In the face of mounting national opposition from headteacher groups, the government refuses to acknowledge that school funding is in crisis. The government insists that schools funding has been and will be protected. However, current proposals will only redistribute an inadequate national funding pot. Surrey schools face 8% budget cuts from: cuts to post-16 funding cuts to early years funding unfunded staff pay rises increased pension and NI costs the new Apprenticeship levy significant cuts to funding for support services inflationary costs and rate rises will serve to compound this increasing financial burden on schools. The government insists that there is significant scope within the national school system to make a further 3bn of efficiency savings by This is an unsubstantiated claim by the government and one criticised publically by the National Audit Office.

5 Last week Year 5 adventured off to Fairthorne Manor for 4 days of energetic fun. With raft building, climbing, kayaking and many more to enjoy, we didn t stop at all. But not everything worked! 2 capsizes and 3 people off the rafts, we were glad there were showers at Ben s house, our temporary home. Harry Wynne, who fell in, claims It was a good moment when I fell in, but I was glad to get back into a warm shower! With the ups, downs and round-androunds, Year 5 thoroughly enjoyed our trip. 8 ESSA - Surrey Schools Swimming - Saturday 18th March An exciting night was to be had as we watched our brave and fearless super swimmers take on the best schools in Surrey. Every one of the team contributed with determination and gave it everything, finishing with pride and beaming faces. Our girls team was Emily Cobbett (Y5), Larissa Johnston (Y5), Lois Wong (Y5), Harriet Cook (Y6) and Charlotte Lambert (Y6). Our boys team was Christian Moller-Butcher (Y5), Lewis Beal (Y6), Charles Crossley (Y6), Lucas Collyer-Todd (Y6) and Max Daines (Y6). Competition was extremely tough with very strict rules and many school teams fielding full squads of competitive club swimmers. Twelve disqualifications were announced on the night but with our attitude and passion, we swam cleanly and were all overjoyed to finish all four races strongly without a single DQ; a great achievement! Results Girls Medley: 12th out of 15 teams Boys Medley: 7th out of 11 teams Girls Freestyle: 13th out of 15 teams Boys Freestyle: 9th out of 11 teams A big thank you to ex Pyrford student Genevieve Moller-Butcher for co-coaching the Pyrford team and being an invaluable support on the night. 9 THE PARENTING PUZZLE COURSE Raising children can be puzzling at times, but puzzles have solutions and the Parenting Puzzle provides them The Parenting Puzzle is an 11 week course that encourages Mums and Dads to enjoy bringing up children and get the best out of family life. It offers positive, practical ways of guiding children so they learn to handle their feelings and their behaviour, the nuts and bolts if you like. The course is informal, fun and a great confidence booster. NEXT COURSE STARTS ON THURSDAY 27 TH APRIL PM 9.00PM AT PYRFORD C of E PRIMARY SCHOOL Open to Mums and Dads of children primary school age. There will be a cost of for the course which will cover the course fees and refreshments. Payable in advance to secure your place. This is a non-refundable payment If you have any concerns re payment please give Clare Gane (Centre Manager) a call To find out more/book a place please contact Nasreen Farooq Children s Centre Administrator On childrenscentreadmin@pyrford.surrey.sch.uk Last Saturday a group of intrepid Pyrford mums took on teams from across the county in the Surrey FA s Mum s and Recreational Football Tournament. We entered two teams, Woking Diamonds Red and Woking Diamonds Black and played six 6-a-side matches. As all good multi-tasking mums, when on the pitch we were focussed on our tactics and skills, and then off the pitch there was much mixing with the other teams and sorting out our supporting families. Out of the 10 teams who entered, we were ecstatic to come 4th and 5th place, with some good tackles and great goals scored plus lots of encouragement from the spectators, especially as most of us have only started playing the sport since the beginning of the school year. Well done to all who played and thank you to our supporters. Anne Nicholson, Becky Mealey, Sam Berry, Marie Lambert, Chrissie Wanless, Jill Gardens, Annabel Cameron, Helen Wass, Fiona Vickery, Nicola Freeman, Sarah Patrick and Emily Christie. If you are interested in joining us, we are at West Byfleet Recreation Ground on Fridays after drop off (9.15am). It s great fun and good exercise. Hope to see you there. Fiona Vickery
We therefore look forward to working in strong positive partnerships with you over the coming term.
