Ed Gore, the businessman, has meant more to the South Brunswick Islands area than any other single person. Anyone with a love for our area has to appreciate how his efforts have shaped our little piece of paradise. Just as important is how many will acknowledge what a true gentleman and friend Ed has been. He personally has helped many, many persons on their journey through life and he will be greatly missed. One quote I found rings true- The comfort of having a friend may be taken away, but not that of having had one. Another especially true quote can be seen right where we sit every Friday morning- The pain passes but the Beauty remains. Please remember his family in your thoughts and prayers. Every day we each have choices to make. How will or can I be a positive influence for someone today? What little thing can I do to help another in need? Can I spare some time and effort to improve the lives of those less fortunate? As our Rotary Club is just beginning a New Year let us all remember that just lighting that single candle is better than sitting in the dark. Meeting Adjourned Rotarian Birthdays Hanania, Bob - Jul 02 Cox, Richie - Jul 07 Our very own Mr. Ed Gore has been called home to glory. Ed Gore, 82, died in his sleep Tuesday night, July 15. Visitation is scheduled for Sunday, July 20 from 2:00pm 5:00pm at Brunswick Funeral Services, 5229 Ocean Highway West in Shallotte, so that you may pay your respects as well as love on Mrs. Dinah and the family. In the meantime, please lift Mrs. Dinah and the boys up in your thoughts and prayers. Funeral services for Ed will take place Monday, July 21 at 1:00pm at Seaside Methodist Church, 1300 Seaside Rd SW, in Sunset Beach. After his military service, Ed helped with and later took over the development of Sunset Beach from his father Mannon. They scraped dunes flat, cut canals to create valuable additional waterfront and piled up sand to build up an entire peninsula of lots on the back side of the island. They even built a floating bridge and moved an entire inlet,

If you vacation on Sunset Beach, the island and the type of holiday you experience was likely shaped by the Gore family. Ed was also a philanthropist. He has donated millions of dollars to his alma mater Campbell University, where the football field is named after him, NC State and Brunswick Community College, where he was a member of the school's foundation's board of directors and where the aquatic center bears the name of his wife Dinah. Ed has been an active member of our club since August of He has touched each of us in a very special way and while his passing creates a tremendous void in our lives, let us remember him always and join together to celebrate his life and his homecoming. Each year, we look outside of our club to recognize someone in the community that exemplifies the principles of Rotary. Candidate information should be submitted to Greg Rupp before July 30, HONORARY ROTARIAN SELECTION CRITERIA 1. South Brunswick Islands Rotary Membership should always be watchful for persons outside our Rotary family who are outstanding contributors to their communities. Names of persons who seem to qualify will be submitted to the Membership Committee by July 30th each year. 2. The Membership Committee shall select the Honorary Rotarian from the names submitted on the following criteria: 2.1 Best performance in improving community life and services 2.2 Services rendered for children, senior citizens, military families and veterans 2.3 Projects that enhance a whole neighborhood, school or community

4 2.4 Upstanding individual character 2.5 Selfless with their time, effort and available resources 3. Any SBI Rotarian may submit their suggestions. Anyone submitting a candidate should verify to the extent practical, the good deeds and services of that individual. 4. The Membership Committee shall select the Honorary Rotarian from the names individual Rotarians submit no later than the July 30th deadline. The Membership Committee shall not consider any names that come before it after the July 30th deadline. The Membership Committee shall select the Honorary Rotarian no later than August 30th. 5. The Secretary shall obtain a suitable plaque to give to the Honorary Rotarian upon the Club s recognition of him or her. District Governor Vanessa's Installation Banquet Paradise Point Officers Club, Jacksonville Lin & Jim Kelly, Jen & David Vanasse, and Bob & Linda Stinson joined 300+ other Rotarians from our District; bore witness to the installation and pledged our support for District Governor Vanessa and each of the 8 area Assistant Governors. In addition to Vanessa's family who traveled from all over the country to be there, we were also joined by such special guests as R.I. Vice President, Anne Matthews and past R.I. Director Ken Morgan. R.I. Vice President, Anne Matthews delivered a special message to each of the incoming club presidents. She also presented new Paul Harris Fellows with their certificates of recognition. Bob surprised Linda by recognizing her with a Paul Harris Fellow. We still can't believe he was able to keep it a secret! It was quite evident that D.G. Vanessa is much loved by all who know her and we look forward to her official visit August 22.

Employee absenteeism affects your business's finances and productivity It's time to start scheduling flu clinics for your business. Brunswick County Health Services would like to offer your business the opportunity to provide flu shots to your staff and their family members. They will be able to come to your location and bring their staff and

6 supplies needed to vaccinate. All you need is a place to set up a flu clinic and at least 25 participants. Participants will be asked to provide an insurance card and a photo ID. Brunswick County Health Services accepts the following insurances: Medicare, Medicaid, Medcost, BCBS, Aetna,United Health Care, Tricare, and CIGNA.
