2 Mission and History (PMM) is an all volunteer, 501(c)3 organization, dedicated to promoting the inherent right of the poor and underprivileged in the Philippines; providing basic and adequate health care, food, and shelter; and, through education, empowering them to become responsible and productive members of society. The organization was founded in 1999 as Philippine Medical Mission, an outreach project of the Social Justice Ministry at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church in Arlington, Va. It was the brainchild of two dedicated Filipino American volunteers, Maricel Bretault and Celia Coronado. PMM obtained its tax exempt 501(c) 3 status in To accomplish its mission, PMM works in partnership with established non profit organizations in the Philippines. PMM undertakes fundraising activities to support its partners poverty alleviation and medical outreach projects and programs. Where Our Partners Serve Philippine Medical Mission has five regular partners who submit proposals for funding every year. However, during times of natural disasters and calamities in the Philippines, PMM also assists other well established NGOs that are at the forefront of emergency humanitarian assistance. 4 3 Letter from the PMM President Dear Friends, On behalf of the board of directors, officers, and volunteers of St. Charles Borromeo Philippine Medical Mission, I would like to thank you for taking the time to read our annual report. This year has been a fruitful year for PMM. As in the past, we are blessed with volunteers and donors who energize PMM with their support, generosity, and love. We are privileged to work with our NGO partners in the Philippines who tirelessly work to give direct care and compassion to the less fortunate. We are also blessed by the experience of unity and connectedness with those whom we help. This is best expressed in the theme for the 2012 PMM high school essay contest, We are one human family and loving our neighbor has global implications. As one person extends help to another person in need, we at PMM continue to do our best to support medical, educational, livelihood, and feeding programs benefitting the poor. Aside from our regular program support to our five partners, PMM worked with three other organizations in We partnered with Xavier University of Cagayan de Oro City to help relocate and provide beds for hundreds of victims of Sendong, the devastating typhoon that hit the southern Philippines in December We also partnered with the sisters of Don Bosco Salesian to support their medical missions that assisted victims of the September 2012 flooding in Luzon. In late December 2012, we partnered with Quota International, an NGO that provided many of the earliest medical missions following the Category 5 super typhoon Pablo which devastated Davao Oriental and Compostela valley. This is our PMM family. We work together. We grow together. We communicate. We, who are blessed with more at this time, share with those who have less. The faith and confidence we give and receive from each other helps us to forge ahead and continue to try to make this world a better place. May we all help to spread love and healing. Sincerely, Vanette Lagera President,

5 The Foundation of Our Lady of Peace Mission, Inc. (FOLPMI) In August 2012, Metro Manila was hit by a series of devastating typhoons. The intense flooding and rain resulted in 95 casualties, 8,428 homes destroyed, and $14.31 million of damage. In response to this natural disaster, FOLPMI conducted emergency relief operations. With PMM s help, FOLPMI provided relief goods to help families in Paranaque and Las Pinas City, two areas affected by the storms. Twenty five cavans of rice and 1,000 cans of sardines were provided to a total of 500 families. Each family received 5.5 pounds of rice and two cans of sardines. In addition to providing emergency assistance to the residents affected by the string of storms and typhoons, FOLPMI also had a medical mission in September The project served 150 patients from the ravaged communities of Paranaque. FOLPMI, in collaboration with the parish priest of St. Andrews Cathedral, used the PMM donation of $1,570 to purchase medicine for individuals particular afflictions, which ranged from tooth extractions and upper respiratory tract infections to hypertension and bronchial asthma. 7 6 The Religious of Notre Dame of the Missions (RNDM) RNDM is an order of religious sisters who work with the indigenous tribe, the Dulangan Menubo, in the mountains of Cotabato, Mindanao. Sister Teresa Le, a nurse for RNDM, coordinates a health program that involves both medical treatment and education. Health education is a crucial aspect in preventing serious illnesses in local communities. Sr. Teresa facilitates the monthly training of 22 health volunteers from the surrounding communities. She trains volunteers on how to treat illnesses and identify more serious health issues, while other nurses discuss more topical subjects such as maternal health and first aid. With other Sisters in the community, Sr. Teresa visits 20 tribal communities and conducts basic health training. The training focuses on hygiene and proper nutrition, including a health assessment to monitor individuals living within the community. In 2012, Sr. Teresa has identified several individuals with tuberculosis and high blood pressure, two health problems that were not of major concern in the past. Volunteers also ensure that pregnant women within the community visit the health center for prenatal appointments. In 2012, there was an emphasis on empowering the local people by working with their village health volunteer to access small social benefits and government benefits, including the Department of Social Welfare and Development s 4P program, which provides monetary assistance for health, nutrition, and education expenses. With the support of PMM, the RNDM Sisters were able to assist 317 patients at the RNDM Dalesan Kailawan Center from December 2011 to August These patients have received support in seeing a doctor and have been provided RNDM health volunteer receives training on treating wounds.
7 with the medicines that they require. The most common illnesses treated were respiratory infections, diarrhea, gastro intestinal illnesses, typhoid fever, urinary tract infections, malnutrition, tuberculosis, and infected wounds. Many patients lives have been saved due to the actions of the RNDM Sisters, including the life of Senga Dapat, a 6 year old child from Siokong. She was diagnosed with a protein deficiency. Once the medical condition was identified, a health volunteer accompanied Senga and her father to the hospital in Kulaman. The RNDM Sisters provided food and medical assistance, as well as hospitalization. Senga was in the hospital for one week and was discharged; however, she was still weak. The RNDM Sisters cared for her for another week, ensuring that she was given nutritious food. When Senga regained strength, she went back to her home in Siokong and was advised to return for a follow up appointment to monitor her progress. 9 8 Childhope Asia Philippines (CHAP) Child Hope Asia Philippines has always been a strong advocate for the protection of the rights of children toward their holistic development. Through its Street Education and Protection Program, Child Hope reaches out to about 1,200 street children every year and provides them with basic needs, which they urgently need. These include the provision of health and medical services through its Mobile Health Clinic (MHC) Project. The MHC Project began in 2007, with St. Charles Borromeo Philippine Medical Mission (PMM) playing a major role in making this project possible. Since then, health and medical services have been made easily available and accessible to street children in Metro Manila. From January to December 2012, the MHC Project, with the support of PMM, has conducted a total of 3,356 consultations in 20 areas in the six cities of Metro Manila: Pasay, Makati, Manila, Parañaque, Quezon City, and Caloocan. Out of the 3,356 consultations, 3,257 were for children, with 1,068 individual street children being seen. Of the 1,068 children, 88% were between the ages of seven and 17. Also, a total of 970 street Brave patient receives treatment in CHAP s Mobile Health Clinic. The MHC treated over 1,000 street children in 2012.
9 children had well child consultations during the year. Well child consultations occur when the children have no subjective complaints during the initial check up, and were found to be well and normal at the time of examination. This is emphasized as a good parameter to measure healthseeking behavior of children beneficiaries. They do not only see the physician when they are ill, but they also give due importance to prevention from sickness. Among the top cases seen were: upper respiratory tract infections (bacterial and viral), dental problems, hyperactive airways syndrome, systemic viral illness, and allergic rhinitis. There were also several cases seen and managed that included teenage pregnancy, pulmonary tuberculosis/primary complex, sexually transmitted infections, and minor surgeries such as male circumcisions. The Mobile Health Clinic (MHC) Project has also continued to be a success because of the active involvement of the Junior Health Workers (JHW s), street children who are trained to administer first aid treatment among their fellow street children. The JHWs also refer other children to public hospitals and health centers when needed, even in the absence of the MHC doctor or their respective street educators. A total of 1,885 children were provided first aid treatment by the JHWs, and approximately 58 children were assisted with referrals to local health centers and hospitals. These JHWs also conducted a total of 218 health education sessions during the year. On a sadder note, CHAP s affiliate program Tahanan Sta. Luisa (TSL) faced financial struggles in TSL s Crisis Intervention Center for Street Girls provides rehabilitation for physically/sexually abused and prostituted street girls between the ages of years old upon admission. PMM helped in partially funding the shelter, which has served over 560 girls since its founding in PMM s founder Celia Coronado's second fundraising initiative was a special concert featuring musical artists in Arlington, including Fr. Gerry Creedon with the proceeds going to benefit TSL. Prior to 2012, partial funding for the shelter s activities came from European nations, who now consider the Philippines as a middle income country and no longer provide support. Tahanan Sta. Luisa continues to search for new sources of revenue to sustain their program and services to preadolescent/adolescent street girls one of the most vulnerable and marginalized demographics in the Philippines. 11 10 ANAWIM Lay Mission Foundation ANAWIM is a non profit organization dedicated to give comfort and dignity to the elderly during the waning years of their lives. Founded in the early 1990s by Brother Bo Sanchez, a lay catholic preacher, ANAWIM provides safe housing for 60 poor, sick, and abandoned elderly individuals. The center has taken in a few orphans and physically and mentally handicapped individuals as well. The center provides shelter, food, and necessary medical care to all residents. A doctor provides weekly consultations and a nurse maintains a small clinic to monitor residents daily health care needs. To date, PMM has provided total grants to ANAWIM of approximately $26,000. The funds were primarily used to purchase medicine for diabetes, hypertension, tuberculosis, and coronary problems. A portion of the funds was also used to equip its mini clinic with medical supplies. The center is located in Montalban, Rizal, occupying a five hectare property that contains several homes for residents, a chapel, mini clinic, social and dining hall, recreation area, fishpond, and a cemetery. ANAWIM became a partner of PMM in 2007, after PMM began funding food, medical supplies and medicine for ANAWIM residents. Lola (Grandma) Erlinda became a resident of ANAWIM in September She suffers from diabetes, impaired hearing, and serious dental problems. She underwent cataract surgery for her right eye in May 2012 at the Medical Center Paranaque. Below is a first person account of her story: For as long as I can remember, I never tasted comfort. At age six, I took care of my ailing mother. Due to finances, I only ate rice mixed with Purico cooking oil and salt. After my mother died, I learned that my father passed away, too. Even though I wanted to, nobody took me to see my father. Orphaned, my grandmother took me in until she got sick. She gave me to her employer, Mrs. Pareja, who was kind and provided for my schooling. At 12, I stowed away, thinking that I would be free to do as I pleased. Hunger pangs, however, gripped me as I wandered. As I struggled to earn a living, I met a man whom I married without much thought. Our marriage turned out to be a disaster. He was irresponsible, fond of gambling, and violent. I was battered and traumatized. I ran away. Alone and with nowhere to go, I found myself on the streets begging, scavenging and selling anything that I could get my hands on. At nights, I slept on cold pavement. Before I knew it, I was already getting old. In 1994, I was selling balot and cigarettes on the streets of Baclaran when a foreigner approached me. He had just lost his wallet to a pickpocket. I pitied him so I offered him a little money for his ride home. From that day on, he became my friend. His name was Jamie Heathe, a Canadian pilot. Whenever he was in the Philippines, he would look for me and give me food and money.
11 In 2009, Jamie saw that my eyes were blurring. In 2011, he brought me to his friend, Dr. Rowena Adiviso. Dr. Rowena said that I needed a cataract operation. She asked if I would be willing to stay in a home for the elderly in Montalban. I said yes without even knowing where Montalban was. After a few days, two bubbly, bespectacled ladies came looking for me. They introduced themselves as Mila and Precy from ANAWIM. They asked if I would be willing to stay in Montalban. Trusting them, I agreed. They left, promising to return. On Sept. 3, 2011, I arrived at ANAWIM. They fed me and gave me a bed with a sheet, not cardboard where I used to lay. The next morning, I had a good bath. All my fingernails and toenails were trimmed short. I felt light, refreshed, and clean all over. I found new friends in my roommates, nursing aides, caregivers, and visitors. I see God s love in ANAWIM. Even though my eyes were clear when I was young, I was just too blind to see God s love. Now that I am old and my eyes are blurred, the eyes of my faith have become clear. Lola residents at ANAWIM Center for the Abandoned Elderly and Disabled. ANAWIM currently cares for over 60 residents to ensure they live their lives in comfort and dignity.
12 The Archbishop Gabriel M. Reyes Memorial Foundation, Inc. (AGMRMFI) The Bulig Akean (Help Aklan) Project is a post typhoon Frank rehabilitation program of the AGMRMFI in partnership with PMM. Now on its fourth year of implementation, the project has benefited a total of 216 poor, undernourished children: 50 from the municipality of Madalag in 2009, and 116 from the municipality of Kalibo in 2010 and In 2012, 50 children in the municipality of Banga were assisted. In addition, more than 450 parents of the beneficiaries as well as barangay (community) leaders have been trained in: family primary health care, nutrition, and sanitation; responsible parenting and natural family planning; protection of children; and community gardening. Home and community vegetable gardens have been developed in Madalag and Banga. The supplementary feeding runs for 52 weeks a year, with four days of feeding per week. Beneficiaries include not only the severely undernourished, but also the physically disabled. Foundation volunteers help rural health nurses in regular deworming and weighing activities. Mothers of the beneficiaries plan and prepare the meals with Barangay nutritionists and Barangay heath scholars. They also assist in feeding the children daily.
13 Emergency Humanitarian Assistance EMERGENCY HUMANITARIAN ASSISTANCE THROUGH CHAP The floods brought about by Habagat, the southwest monsoon, in August and September 2012 affected many of Child Hope s street children participants. Approximately 320 street families (about 960 street children) and about 40 more abandoned and neglected street children who live alone on the streets from all over Metro Manila, lost their very few, yet very important, belongings: undergarments, clothes, slippers, and sleeping materials. Despite the fact that they have always been used to scarce supplies of food, they had to endure hunger for a couple of days. It wasn t long before PMM extended a helping hand and provided them with relief items that they urgently needed. Through its emergency donation, about 100 street families with their children from the areas of Balintawak, Mayon, Monumento, Luneta, Ermita, and Kalaw were able to receive food, grocery items, toiletries, mats, and blankets. The street children and their families expressed their gratitude to PMM and shared that the items they received provided them not only with relief from the sufferings and devastations brought about by the recent disaster, but, more importantly, it provided them hope to stand up once again and strive to improve their living condition. They shared that they were very grateful to know that even if they live on the streets and are considered as a liability in our society, there are still people and groups who believe in helping them and are willing to help them to pursue their dreams and become productive. PMM shares in the mission of CHAP to uplift the situation of street children as these children aspire and work for a better future. The devastations brought by typhoon Habagat may have been harsh to these people, but SCPMM s assistance provided them with high hopes. They continued to have big smiles and believe that even in times of disaster, there are persons and groups who come to their aid and provide urgently needed relief, aid, and hope. 15 14 EMERGENCY HUMANITARIAN ASSISTANCE AND REHABILITATION ASSISTANCE FOR TYPHOON SENDONG VICTIMS THROUGH XAVIER UNIVERSITY On December 16, 2011, typhoon Sendong (international name: Washi) hit the southern part of the Philippines, including the cities of Cagayan De Oro and Iligan City. Almost 1,260 people died from the flash floods and torrential rains. Thousands of families lost their homes. Damage to agriculture and infrastructure was about $31 million. Xavier University of Cagayan, a Jesuit run institution, was one of the first groups to deliver emergency humanitarian relief to the thousands displaced by this calamity. Xavier continues to be a major player in the relief and rehabilitation efforts for the victims. Forty days after the calamity, the Fr. Eric Velandria, SJ of Xavier University displays a sample of the bunk beds provided to survivors of Typhoon Sendong in Cagayan De Oro and Iligan City. university donated five hectares of land and soon started building homes for 500 homeless families, calling the village Xavier Ecoville. About 525 households/families were transferred from the evacuation centers to Xavier Ecoville in Barangay Lumbia. Construction for permanent housing started last year. Xavier is also marshaling university resources to implement values, education, community organizing, health and sanitation education, skill building, and livelihood programs to strengthen and make sustainable the community of Xavier Ecoville. The most updated news of the relief efforts can be found at: From December 2011 to June 2012, PMM has donated almost $22,000 to help in the emergency relief and rehabilitation of typhoon survivors. Most of the funds were raised by IMF World Bank community and St. Charles parishioners. With the purchase of bunk beds, this money was used to help in the resettlement of the families. Each bunk bed cost about $60. This cost includes freight and delivery. The 250 families who received these bunk beds, which are equivalent to two beds for each family, were instructed in the bed assembly as their social equity or contribution to the project. In addition to bunk beds, the money was also used to help pay for the lofts for the homes of 13 families.
15 EMERGENCY HUMANITARIAN ASSISTANCE THROUGH DON BOSCO SALESIAN SISTERS FOR SEPTEMBER 2012 LUZON TYPHOON On Sept. 23, 2012, about 369 families of flood stricken Barangay Sta. Cruz, and 586 families from San Pascual benefited from the medical dental mission and haircutting services offered by volunteers from Vides International and other volunteer medical mission groups from Manila and Pampanga. Medicines were donated by Intermed Philippines and Falcon Cares group, and St. Charles Borromeo Philippine Medical Mission (PMM) donated $1,000. PMM has been sending aid to the Salesian Sisters since 2009 when Ondoy, a destructive typhoon, hit the country. One thousand bags of goods filled with two kilos of rice, a mix of five canned goods, underwear, face towels, and toiletries were distributed to Barangay San Miguel. The barangay officials from the three barangay units were grateful on behalf of their constituents for the free medical consultation and medicines given to them. Despite hunger, fatigue, and the heat of the sun, the volunteers happily connected with the sick and elderly people of the territory. The volunteers said, We thought that we brought them assistance; it was us who left with hearts so warmed and so inspired. The volunteer medical team doctors, nurses, dentists, teachers, students, parents, and Salesian Sisters at the medical dental mission in three barangay units at Hagonoy, Bulacan on September 23 rd, 2012.
