I take care of adding the advertising and finishing the final newsletter to prepare for print. I am filling in as temporary Editor until someone can take it over. Please consider stepping up. As some of you may not know, the newsletter is required by GWRRA. I will show you all you need to know and help you get started! Give your loved ones an extra hug this year, because you never know what tomorrow will bring. News reports of shootings and lives lost senselessly is becoming way too familiar when we listen to the news. IN MEMORY: Of all those who have lost a loved one in the past year. Whether they were family, friends, or GWRRA extended family. You are in my thoughts and prayers this Holiday Season. To our PA-V family, Erika & I hope everyone had a pleasant, restful and enjoyable Thanksgiving. Our holidays were quiet because my daughter-in-law took the kids to NC to spend the Thanksgiving break with her family and relatives. My son comes home from Iraq this week and will be home for the rest of the year. I am sure we will have a very good Christmas and New Year. We wish you an enjoyable holiday season with a very Merry Christmas!! May we all remember the "reason" for the season. God Bless you all and we'll see you on the road again next year. 9 There is a tradition in Germany during advent season. This is an Advent Wreath decorated with 4 candles and whatever else anybody wants. Mine is very traditional with red candles and bows, same thing every year. Erika Sprenkle gradually introducing us to the people here. We'll be making more friends (you can never have too many friends). But don't worry. We won't forget about all of you. You're family. We hate missing the chapter Christmas party for the first time in years. Hope everyone has a good time. Wishing all of you a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. If anyone would like to send letters, this is our address: Box 95 W & I Resort 206 S Stewart Rd Mission, TX Denny and Kathy Brillhart GOD S MEAL BARREL Doris was recently presented with all of PA-V generous food donations. Thanks to all the members who brought non-perishable food donations to our November gathering. They are very much appreciated as we approach the Christmas Holiday. Chapter of the year. It s something we all --- work towards? hope to achieve? a competition of sorts? I understand it was designed to get us as a group active and doing something. Something to be proud of, if and when we as a group achieve it. But it takes effort, the effort of all of us, to keep track of those activities. One person is assigned to keep a record, count the points we earn for the various activities. And here is the but again. One person can t do it alone, it takes all of us. Sure, one person does keep the record and adds up the points etc. Only this one person is not THERE all the time, does not participate in every activity. So where does that one person get the information needed? Here is where we all have to chip in some. One participant in each activity has to make sure the record keeper gets a picture, a roster or better yet, both. Not too much to ask, I think. And when all possible points are added up and we made it, we can all be proud of ourselves, of what WE have accomplished. Bill Sprenkle Greetings to everyone from Texas. Hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving. Ours was pretty good even though we weren't with our family. Of course we have Gary and Billie Savage, and they are
10 Hello everyone, well here we go again with another month in the books. I am writing this article and trying to get it out before the holiday season kicks into high gear. I hope everyone is getting ready to give their wish list to Jolly Saint Nick. Christmas will be here before you know it. By the time you read this newsletter, Thanksgiving will be a memory and you will be enjoying all the leftovers. Andi and I hope you had a fun and safe Thanksgiving holiday. I can't believe Andi and I have all but completed a whole year as District Directors. Time sure has gone by quickly. We think back and look at all we have done this year. Attended two All Chapters, the Bi-State Rally, visited more chapter gatherings and events than we can remember. We really had a wonderful time everywhere we went. One thing you can count on is that you are welcomed with open arms no matter what chapter you visit. While you may be thinking about what kind of Gold Wing accessories or clothing you may want for Christmas, the District team is working on change of officer paperwork for 9 of our 21 chapters. These 9 chapters are changing some of their leadership teams. We are excited about the new changes in chapter leadership. We have chapters that are having members step up that have never been in chapter leadership before. Talking to the new chapter leaders and seeing their enthusiasm is exciting. We will be working on making the change for them as smooth as possible. Keep an eye on our District website for the new officers listed for the chapters. The PA District will again be holding the annual fundraiser for As in the past few years the district fund raising activity will be the Cash Calendar. There will be 31 winners during the month of August, 2016 if all tickets are sold. The winner will be based on the Big Four Pennsylvania evening lottery number. Each ticket has two numbers on it which gives each ticket holder two chances to win. If a BONUS number drawing takes place any evening that drawing is NOT eligible to win. The amount of the payout for the month is $5,000. The nightly payout is marked on the calendar of each ticket. Like last year we have four $ nights on the ticket. The tickets sell for $5.00 each with two chances to win each night for 31 nights. This has shown to be an easy ticket to sell. We need your help in promoting and selling this ticket. The proceeds will help fund our district rally along with our programs and funding to operate the district. By selling these tickets you will also help out your chapter treasury by receiving a percentage back from every ticket sold by your chapter. Chapter directors, we mailed out the tickets and you should be receiving them before this newsletter comes out. Some of the district team attended the Region meeting in New York this past November. We thank our district team members for traveling the distance and attending the region meeting. A lot of very important information was received by our district team that attended. We have renewed the Roll for the Dough program for Please check out the 2016 RFTD guidelines on the District website. We made some changes to the guidelines and tried to make wording easier to understand. This simplification of the guidelines should make it easier on what you need to do and what events you need to attend to accumulate points. The Roll For the Dough coordinators, Bonnie and Gerry VanArt have worked hard to simplify this so we can get 100% participation in the 2016 RFTD program. The PA district congratulates Chapter PA K for coming away with the $ bonus for most points. Chapter PA W was tied in points for first place but came 10 members short on the pictures they sent in. For 2015 we had 16 of 21 chapters accumulate points. Thank you everyone that participated. Remember all you need is 20 points to get your yearly charter fees paid by the PA District. With all the Christmas and chapter anniversary parties that come this time of the year you can have a good start on 20 points when riding season starts. Just get 5 members to go by car or bike and you accumulate points. We really want to have 100% participation this year from our chapters. Even if your chapter does not reach 20 points, you can look back and remember all the fun you had visiting other chapters and spending time with all of your Gold Wing friends. Andi and I would like to take this opportunity to wish all of you a very safe and blessed Christmas. We hope you will be safe while visiting family and friends. Rick & Andi Riek Pennsylvania District Directors District Website: When this newsletter comes out, Thanksgiving will be over. We hope that all of you that traveled had safe journeys and got to celebrate Thanksgiving with your family. We are now getting ready to move into the Christmas holiday season. This is the time of the year when most chapters take a break so members can spend time with their families. In our house, Christmas decorating started a little earlier than usual this year. We had to get the outside of our home completed before my surgery, so that during my recovery I was not out trying to finish. We started at the beginning of October and with my son s help, we completed on time. The outside of our home is illuminated with over 10,000 lights and many lawn ornaments. The inside decorating started as soon as clean up from Thanksgiving dinner was completed. There will be almost as many colorful lights inside as there is outside. In a week or two, we will be getting ready to roam through the woods to pick out our family room tree, which usually has at least 2,000 lights on it. This is only one of five trees we have in our house. This is my favorite time of the year. I hpe that each and everyone one of you get to enjoy it as much as we do. It s also that time of the year when we are all thinking about hibernating for the winter. Hibernating our motorcycles, that is! We do know of a few who never give up riding, even during the winter months. Riding for Renee has come to an end, even though the weather has been warmer than in Novembers past. Myself, I may get out a few times, as long as the roads are clear. On New Year s Day, unless there is snow on the roads, I try to get Renee out to make
11 our New Year s Day ride. We do this every year hoping that it will bring more riding time during that year for us. The end of the year brings about changes in leadership at many levels in the organization. Please remember that the new officers are just that... new. The membership needs to give them the chance to develop their ideas as new officers, and be careful not to make judgments on the new officers to soon. Along with that, the new officers need to keep in mind what changes and how many changes they would like to implement within the chapter. To the membership, change is a hard thing to swallow, so the new officers need to take things slowly. We cannot tell you how important we believe that the Membership Enhancement Program is to your district and chapters. The MEP is what holds all of us together! It is the FUN in GWRRA. Any group of people can get together to go for a ride on their motorcycles; but it is the FUN that brings us back and makes us a family. The Membership Enhancement Coordinators have a very large responsibility in their region, district, and the chapter. Take the Area Report List, for example. If you have a member that is great at talking with people, they could be the person to make contact with the members on the list, and that person would be your life line to a healthy chapter. Use the ARL to your full advantage, contact all prospective members, and give a call to the members that have memberships about to expire (they may not even realize it). The prospective members could bring new life to your chapter. You never know, they may be your replacement as an officer for the chapter. Communication is key in our organization. If you do not communicate with the membership, those people will sooner or later fade away and you will never see them again. Also, communication between the MEP officers is very helpful at gathering information and logging this information to help find that thread that keeps the membership together. The recently announced changes to the procedure for ARL contacts will not be implemented by Region B at this time. Our decision was based on direct results of feedback from around the region regarding this new procedure. We added the topic to a previouslyscheduled region directors zoom conference call. We talked this over with our Deputy Director and he is on board with our decision. Dan & Mary Costello, Region MEC talked with John & Lena Bryant, International Assistant Directors, Membership Enhancement Program, via a telephone call. At this time we are all on the same page. All ARL responses and procedures will stay the same as last month, and will not change until the International Teams takes another look to find a way that works for all of us volunteers. If there are any questions whatsoever regarding this decision against using these new procedures, please contact us or Dan & Mary Costello by . As we read the newsletters from around the region, we can see that plans for activities for 2016 are already getting set. There are a lot of things already planned for next year and we are always looking for some new FUN things to do. We are already looking forward to the next riding season. Providing my job opportunities work out for the best; we are planning to make Wing Ding a long trip, which will take us to all of the states that we have not been able to visit before. Since we have visited 41 of the states, that list is just a little shorter. I do not foresee having the time to make Alaska. We have so been looking forward to doing a trip like this. It was supposed to happen in 2010, but that nasty four letter word work got in the way. Let s keep our fingers crossed for this year. The holiday season always brings out the best in people. It is wonderful to see how our GWRRA family helps those out in need. Many chapters have charities that they support during this time of the year. It is so heartwarming to know that the GWRRA family is willing to help out others in need. Members of our GWRRA family have the biggest hearts. We hope this becomes a rewarding time of year, and fills your hearts with the joy that you were able to help out those in need. As 2015 draws to a close, we would like to take this opportunity to convey a huge thank you to all the members of the Region Team for your service to GWRRA. To all of the district and chapter officers we would also like to say thank you. Without you, there would be no GWRRA. Renee and I would like to wish each of you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Please be safe for the holidays and we look forward to spending another great year with all of you having FUN at whatever we are doing.
