Sustained Dialogue About Sustained Dialogue engages students in dialogue every week to examine difficult subjects including race, gender, socioeconomic status, religion, sexual orientation and identity. Through dialogue, we hope to bring together diverse perspectives at UVA to create an open and accepting community where each individual is valued and respected. Highlights Co-sponsorships with other University Schools Topic-Specific Semester Long Dialogue Groups Working to plan events and form chapters at the Law School, Medical School, and Nursing School Experimenting with Sustained Dialogue groups that focus on one topic for an extended period of time, allowing for a more narrow and focused approach to dialogue. Public Service Day Groups of law students matched with nonprofits around Charlottesville to do hands-on work Students volunteered at Camp Holiday Trails, Charlottesville SPCA, The Haven, Ronald McDonald House, and others.
Nursing Student Council Highlights: Nursing Student Council s main service initiative is partnering with the Hospitality House (affiliated with UVA Medical Center), which provides cheap housing for patients getting outpatient treatment at the cancer center/medical center, or for family members of patients who are admitted at the medical center. They sponsor monthly dinners at the Hospitality House for every month of the school year to cook/cater a dinner for the people staying at the house, spend around 2 hours with the residents, talking to them about what they are going through to provide friendly support to them during a difficult time! Their long term goal is to continue this sustainable relationship for several years to come.
Jewish Social Justice Council About: Jewish Social Justice Council is a service-oriented CIO affiliated with Hillel at the Brody Jewish Center. Our mission is inspired by the Jewish value "tikkun olam," which means repairing the world. Highlights: They had their 11th annual Sleepout for the Homeless on October 9-11 in the Amphitheater to raise awareness of homelessness and support the homeless in Charlottesville. On Sunday night (Oct 9) at 7pm, they had an Open Mic Night on topics of injustice and inequality. On Monday night (Oct 10) at 7pm there will be an Interfaith Dialogue. All students were invited to sleep overnight in the Amphitheater after each evening's event. All proceeds benefit a organization that helps the homeless in Charlottesville. In addition, JSJC makes monthly visits to the Colonnades Retirement Community to lead Shabbat services. They visit Our Lady of Peace, an assisted living facility, to celebrate holidays with the residents. Throughout the year they organize several other service activities, such as volunteering with the Blue Ridge Food Bank, AHIP, and Challah for Hunger. Their events are open to anyone who would like to participate!
Diversity in Nursing for a Better Community (DNBC) About: PPB is the UVA chapter of the international humanitarian organization Project Peanut Butter, whose mission is to fight malnutrition in Subsaharan Africa and Southeast Asia through the use of a peanut-based nutrient combination called RUTF. Here is a sample of some of their service work! - DISTRIBUTION OF RUTF: Project Peanut Butter currently operates about 20 mobile clinics in southern Malawi, where PPB nurses assess children for malnutrition and provide life-saving treatment to those who qualify at no cost. PPB distributes RUTF at these mobile clinics - Volunteering at Race Against Hunger 5K A fundraising event geared towards raising money for PPB and GlobeMed at UVA. (GlobeMed) is another health-focused CIO on Grounds, and their mission is to provide good care and promote global health through fundraisers and mission trips to villages in need. - Co-sponsoring Hunger Alliance A dinner provide constructive dialogue (and free food) for students and professors in a roundtable-type setting. PPB, CfH, and FG leaders give a presentation on global health and sustainability, outlining how we can address issues of hunger and malnutrition domestically and internationally. - Participating in Hoos for Health Alliance - Different groups like DNBC, Challah for Hunger, Feel Good, and Green Grounds come together to talk about their mission/purpose and see how different clubs can come together
Human Animal Support Services Highlights: Their signature event is "Hounds Helping Hoos", which takes place during finals season in the libraries (usually Clemons and Alderman). They work with therapy teams in the Charlottesville area (we have previously worked with the UVA Hospital therapy teams as well) who love the opportunity to help students de-stress. This semester, they are starting a new series called "Dogs in Dorms". Their hope is that they will be able to help first years combat stress and homesickness by bringing therapy dogs directly to them. They had our first Dogs in Dorms event on September 18th for New Dorms and plan to host another event for Old Dorms or Gooch/Dillard next month!
Encore About: Encore Club is a non-profit CIO that works with the Hospice of the Piedmont, a hospice in the local Charlottesville area. We work with the hospice to grant many last wishes for the patients and their families. Some projects and work they have done include: Kroger Gift Cards: Through various fundraisers and bake sales, Encore raised $300 worth of $20 gift cards for a family who didn't have enough money for groceries or gas while they were here visiting their family member. Christmas Gifts: They helped raise enough money to purchase the gifts for each child, wrapped them, and delivered them a family, where the husband was in the hospice, and couldn t afford gifts for their last christmas together. They plan to make fundraisers in collaboration with other clubs! In the past, they have collaborated with Amuse Bouche to advertise their show as well as sell baked goods during it.
Rotaract Club at UVa About: Rotaract empowers young men and women to actively contribute in the Charlottesville community by promoting leadership values, engaging in service activities with a focus on poverty and education, and developing professional relationships with the Rotary Club of Charlottesville through networking and side-by-side volunteering. Some the great projects they have been involved in include: - Loaves & Fishes - Distribute food to impoverished families in Charlottesville Innisfree Village - Interact and accompany mentally disabled adults who are a part of this caring program in Crozet, VA Martha Jefferson House - Work with the senior home staff to provide service and companionship to local seniors Rotaract-Interact Mentorship Program - A new initiative connecting high school students interested in service and social entrepreneurship with Rotaract college students via a mentoring program
