1 Coaches vs. Cancer of Connecticut Newsletter Our Mission: To increase cancer awareness and promote healthy living among students, faculty, school staff, fans, and the community at large though yearround awareness efforts, fundraising activities and advocacy programs. American Cancer Society Years! The American Cancer Society will turn 100 years old on May 22, One-hundred years ago, the word cancer was rarely spoken, and we lost almost all patients to the disease. Thanks to 15 determined physicians and business leaders who wanted to raise awareness of cancer back in 1913, the American Cancer Society has grown to become the world s leader in the fight to end the disease. The progress we ve made is remarkable: Today, 2 out of 3 people diagnosed with cancer are surviving (for at least five years). In fact, more than 400 people a day in the US are celebrating birthdays that would have otherwise been lost to the disease. We ve contributed to a 20 percent decline in cancer death rates in the US since the early 1990s. We ve played a role in nearly every cancer research breakthrough in recent history. Each year, we help cancer patients everywhere get the help they need when they need it. For example, last year alone we assisted nearly 1 million people who called us for help, providing free services like a place to stay while traveling for treatment, rides to treatment, emotional support, and much more. While we believe our 100 th birthday is an opportunity to celebrate the progress we ve made during the last century, it is not a time to rest. Our number one priority is to eliminate cancer as a major public health problem so we never lose another loved one to this disease. We re on a mission to finish the fight. You can help by participating in the $100 for 100 challenge mentioned in this newsletter. Thank you to those coaches and teams that have supported the Coaches vs. Cancer program and helped the American Cancer Society in its mission to transform cancer from deadly to treatable and from treatable to preventable. Youth Initiatives Coordinator for Connecticut Coaches vs. Cancer Connecticut is now online Check us out! 2 The American Cancer Society will turn 100 years old on May 22. We are asking each spring sports team to pledge to raise at least $100 for the American Cancer Society during the month of May in honor or the 100 th anniversary If you are willing to take the challenge, simply collect your donations and send them to the address listed below or make your donation on-line at Each team that participates will be recognized in the Coaches vs. Cancer newsletter and receive a certificate. Your team will be making a real difference in the fight against cancer and helping the American Cancer Society create a world with less cancer and more birthdays! Help us finish the fight! American Cancer Society 38 Richards Ave. Norwalk, CT Attn: Coaches vs. Cancer For fund-raising ideas or materials, contact: - kelly.stewart@cancer.org

Spotlight On Lewis Mills Boys Team Plans to Lacrosse Out Cancer! When the Lewis Mills Lacrosse team, coached by Patrick Schmitt, hosts their Coaches vs. Cancer game it s not just a way to raise money for the American Cancer Society - it s personal. Coach Schmitt and the team will take on cancer in honor of their goalie Cameron Greenwood, a cancer survivor. Cameron s survival story is familiar to the Connecticut lacrosse community many of which have supported him throughout his battle with Ewing s Sarcoma. The team has faced another challenge this season - they have to travel everyday for practice and games while their school field is being renovated. Coach Schmitt and his team will host their Coaches vs. Cancer game on Saturday, May 18 against Wamogo.
4 Collegiate Coaches vs. Cancer Games Thanks to these colleges for hosting Coaches vs. Cancer Games
5 If you could prevent even one person from hearing the words, you have cancer, would you? Now is your chance. We are researching today for a cancer-free tomorrow. If you have never been diagnosed with cancer, help us prevent cancer for future generations so that your children and grandchildren won t be diagnosed either. The American Cancer Society Cancer Prevention Study-3 (CPS-3) is enrolling participants. Help us save lives, and celebrate a world with more birthdays. Visit for more information. It s Not Too Late to Host a Coaches vs. Cancer Game! The events are inspiring and easy to coordinate. The donations raised make a real difference in the lives of cancer patients and their families. Thanks to teams like the ones mentioned in this newsletter, the American Cancer Society was able to fund $1.5 million dollars in new research grants in Connecticut this January that s in addition to the $8.8 million already invested in the state. I can provide materials and fundraising ideas to help you develop a successful game plan. I am available to meet at your convenience. The meetings are short they typically last less than 20 minutes. Contact me today to arrange a meeting we can meet in person or schedule a telephone call. Want to participate but just too busy to take the call? I will be happy to work with student or parent volunteers - just provide me with their contact information. With your support, we can create a world with less cancer and more birthdays! kelly.stewart@cancer.org Look for us on facebook Coaches vs. Cancer Connecticut Submit photos and information about your game to be featured on facebook.
