You and 1,500 fellow Adventurers will enjoy an overnight stay at Base Camp, with entertainment, campfires, hot showers and a tent provided for you. Every Adventurer receives a fundraising pack and a t-shirt. Complete your trek, hit your fundraising target and receive a medal and certificate to celebrate your achievement. 3 Teamwork Creating shared experiences is a key part of the DofE Adventure and there is no better way to do that than to enter as a team. There is no limit to the number of people allowed in a team, but we recommend four. When you register as a team, the fundraising target and registration fees will be calculated based on the number of people you enter. All team members must be aged 18 or over to enter the DofE Adventure. Going solo? Experience the excitement of meeting your trekking group on the day and bonding over the shared experience of stepping out of your comfort zone. When you register for the DofE Adventure online you ll be asked to create a JustGiving page where your fundraising target will already be set. The DofE Challenge team is here for you every step of the way to help you smash your target and help transform young lives.
4 Get ready for a truly memorable weekend We will you an event information pack with everything you need closer to the event, but to help you start planning now, here is some key information about the weekend. Image Threshold Sports If you have any questions, check out DofEChallenge.org/FAQs. Saturday 30 September Setting out The Adventure starts from Bamford, with the first groups setting out at 8am. You will be ed your start time in advance of the event. Please plan to arrive at the start line at least 45 minutes before you are due to set off, to allow time for parking, registrations and final preparations. You will be able to buy breakfast and hot drinks, but you may wish to eat before you arrive to save time. Join one of our warm up sessions to get you ready to go. Checkpoints along the way Water and snacks will be available along the route from checkpoints manned with support staff. It is essential you check in with our team so we know you are safe and well. A night under the stars You finish the day at Base Camp in Hope, the overnight location for all DofE Adventurers. Those taking part in the one-day trek receive their medals as they cross the finish line. When you arrive you ll be directed to your tent, which will be pitched and ready. Drop your kit and take a well-deserved hot shower. Prepare your dinner or buy food and drink from our stalls. Then take a seat by the campfire and share your DofE stories, or enjoy entertainment in the marquee before getting some well-earned rest.
5 Sunday 1 October One-day Adventurers home time For Adventurers on the one-day trek, it is time to make your way home. Further details on transport options will be shared with you by ahead of the event. Two-day trekkers start The first of the two-day Adventurers will set off at 8am. Cook your own breakfast, or buy from the food stalls before you go. We will be doing early morning stretches and warm ups for the day ahead to get your legs ready for another challenging day of trekking. Checkpoints Once again, our manned checkpoints will provide you with much-needed water, snacks and motivation to keep you going. Crossing the line Experience a huge sense of satisfaction when you cross the finish line back in Bamford and collect your medal and certificate. Hot food and drinks will be available to buy from our food stalls before you travel home.

7 Changing young lives with every step As a charity, the DofE relies on the generous support of people like you to continue its life-changing work with young people. Every DofE Adventurer pledges to raise money for the DofE Charity as part of their challenge and help give a young person the opportunity to change their life completely just like Jon. Taking part in the DofE saved my life; it unlocked my potential and gave me the tools to succeed. I left school at 16, with no plan or idea of what I wanted to do. I was young, lost and confused. I had no drive or ambition and quickly found myself getting into trouble with the law. When I was 18, I was sentenced to six and a half years in a young offenders institution. It was rock bottom. One day I heard about The Duke of Edinburgh s Award coming into the prison through Reading Football Club. I put my name down and was picked for one of only 15 spaces. It was a moment that would change the course of my life. Over the next three years, I achieved my Bronze and Silver DofE Awards, and began working towards my Gold. I was volunteering as a listener for the Samaritans; taking part in physical activities; I d discovered a passion for cooking; and I was planning a four-day expedition to the Brecon Beacons. I had gone from a shy, lost young man with little hope, to a man with confidence, skills and a motivated attitude towards life. As the end of my sentence came around, I felt a massive sense of pride and achievement. In April 2011, I was presented with my Gold Award by The Duke of Edinburgh himself. It was the proudest day of my life not just because of what I had achieved but also for how I had made my family proud. The same month I was released back into the big wide world. I worked for Jamie Oliver s restaurants for five years, working my way up from commis chef to sous chef. I spent some time with Raymond Blanc in his two Michelin-star restaurant and Angela Hartnett s Michelin-starred Murano. In 2015 I started my own business, offering a private chef experience for dinners and events. I love food, I love cooking, I love my career and I love my life. I could be a million miles away from where I am now, but I am not. I am a young guy with ambitions and dreams. I will be a success. And it is all down to my experiences with the DofE and the generous people who support the Charity, helping to give young people, many with a similar story to mine, a chance to change their lives. 8 Your fundraising will change lives We are asking you to raise a minimum of 150 per person for one-day Adventurers and 200 per person for two-day Adventurers. To help you collect the donations, a JustGiving page will automatically be created for you or your team when you register. We ll also provide top tips to help you smash your fundraising target by and on social media channels. 6o could help a young person facing financial hardship access kit, transport or materials to do their DofE. 1o0 could fund one of our front line DofE team members for a day. Each one will positively impact thousands of young lives every year. 25o could fund the training of a DofE expedition volunteer, ensuring young people can safely enjoy great outdoors experiences together.
9 FAQs Do I need to enter as a team? No, you can go solo or sign up as a team. Either way, with 1,500 DofE Adventurers taking part, you won t feel on your own for long! What does the Team Leader do? The Team Leader is the person who initially signs up to the event and sets up your fundraising page. Your Team Leader will act as the main point of contact between the DofE and your team. What if I can t raise the minimum sponsorship? The DofE Adventure is a challenging walk and you ll be surprised how many of your friends and family will want to support you. There are lots of ideas of ways to raise money in the fundraising booklet that we will send you when you register. We will be here to support you every step of the way. How fit do I need to be? We estimate that 25km takes approximately five to seven hours to walk over uneven footpaths. Whatever your current fitness levels, we will provide you with training plans to help you prepare. You will need to commit to doing some dedicated training, walking on similar terrain with a rucksack to make sure you are ready to take on the challenge. What kit do I need? You will need to bring a sleeping bag and anything else that you need overnight. You can choose whether to bring cooking equipment and food to cook for yourself, or buy your food from the selection of food stalls available at the start, Base Camp and finish line. The most important piece of kit is your footwear you need some that are comfortable and well worn-in. You will also need waterproofs and suitable clothing for all weather conditions. You can download a recommended kitlist from DofEChallenge.org/Resources How old do I need to be? The minimum age for DofE Adventurers is 18. How do I plan my route? If you have opted for the Signposted adventure, the route will be marked for you and you will be given instructions to follow. If you have registered for the Self-navigation option, we will provide you with grid references on the day. We recommend that you take some time to brush up on your map-reading skills in advance.
