1 The League of Women Voters of North Orange County February 2017 The Voter P.O Box 3073 Fullerton, CA Serving the cities of Brea, Buena Park, Cypress, Fullerton, La Habra, La Palma, Placentia, Yorba Linda The Times They Are a-changin by Jan Wagner, Pres. LWVNOC Inside This Issue Your League in Action 2 Read with League 3 Lunch with League 4 In Memoriam 4 Contact Info 5 Calendar 6 Officers and Directors 7 Membership Application 7 Change is an active word! All around us people are gathering, talking, marching, planning, wondering, worrying, hoping. On January 20, tens of thousands gathered in Washington D.C. to cheer the inauguration and hear the voice of our 45 th President. The next day, millions of women and men marched in the streets of our nation s capital, and in cities and towns across the country, to demand their voices be heard, too. The Women s March was a powerful, inspiring event. Participants were from diverse backgrounds and their issues were many. League members, including many in Orange County, marched to protect voting rights, healthcare, and the environment. Yet even as we were walking, we were asking ourselves What s next? [See What s Next on next page]

2 LWVNOC The Voter February 2017 What s Next continued from page one Demonstrations and pageantry are great, but every day commitment and consistent effort are what bring about real change. At LWVNOC, we re taking concrete steps to be more active in our communities and our country. We will soon be ing members a survey to help us focus our efforts. Here are two simple actions every member can take to help: 1. Complete and return our Advocacy Survey. We want to know your priorities for action over the next two years. This easy, quick survey should take about two minutes. Just check the three topics you most want addressed, and then press the Send button. We know we need to focus our efforts, and we really want them to reflect our membership! 2. Ask that friend or relative you ve been thinking of to join the League of Women Voters. Help them get involved in our work to engage with elected officials, empower new voters and learn about issues that impact our communities. LWVNOC is also working hard to be more effective. We are proud and delighted to announce that our League has been selected to host one of four LWV of California Leadership Academies. California League President Helen Hutchison will join us on February 25, for a workshop from 9:30 to 4:00 in the Fullerton Police Department Mural Room. For more information, please contact Patti Chikahisa at chiks2@pacbell.net. Call me crazy, but I m excited as we begin this February, birthday month for the League of Women Voters. I m truly interested in receiving your responses to our Advocacy Survey. At the February Lunch with League, we ll begin an hour early to discuss those responses at a General Meeting and officially adopt program goals. We end the month sharing a wonderful day with California League President Helen Hutchison, learning how to best turn goals into action. Times may be changin, but we plan to be ready! Your League in Action by Mary Fuhrman Each February LWVC asks the local leagues to make appointments with their assembly person and state senator to find where they stand on a few issues. We send the answers to our state lobbyist, Trudy Schafer, so she knows where the legislators stand before she calls on them in Sacramento urging them to vote for bills we support. This year the topics we will be addressing with them include: Funding of elections in California Public Higher Education challenges Water Resources We are currently arranging meetings with Assemblywoman Sharon Quirk-Silva and Senator Josh Newman. 2
