1 September Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Saturday, October 17, 2009 City Island, Harrisburg SAVE TIME ON WALK DAY! Want to avoid waiting in line on walk day? Save time by participating in BANK NITE! Visit the American Cancer Society Capital Area Unit on the specified days to turn in registration forms, drop off donations, and pick up your team ttshirts! shirts 2009 BANK NITES: Mon., October 5: 8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. VOLUNTEER TRAINING: It takes many volunteers to make Making Strides a success. Would you consider joining the ranks of our day of event volunteers? All volunteers are asked to complete a one-our training on Monday, October 5 or Tuesday, October 6. Training will be held at 3211 North Front Street beginning at 6:00pm. Register for the training by contacting the American Cancer Society at or harrisburg.strides@cancer.org. All day of event volunteers will receive a PINK volunteer t-shirt. Wed., October 14: 8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. The Capital Unit office is located at: 3211 N. Front St., Suite 100, Harrisburg, PA NEW WALK ROUTE! Due to construction on City Island, we will have a new route for the 2009 walk. The walk will begin on City Island at the start of the walking bridge. We save lives and create more birthdays by helping you stay well, helping you get well, by finding cures, and by fighting back.
2 We invite your school to become a part of Students for Strides, Strides the youth-centered movement in the fight against breast cancer! It s easy! Invite students, faculty, staff, and administrators to join your team. Then challenge your team members to raise funds for the American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer. The money you raise will support breast cancer research as well as programs and services right here in South Central Pennsylvania. Students can also participate in our annual student tshirt design contest. On the day of the walk, all student teams are invited to a special student-only area with raffles, food, prizes, and more! For additional information or to register your team, visit or contact Adrienne Thoman at adrienne.thoman@cancer.org or By becoming a member of the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN), you are joining a movement of people who are ready to FIGHT BACK against cancer. Government must play a critical role in defeating cancer, but elected officials aren t doing all they can to make cancer history. That s why we need YOU! ACS CAN will make the voice of the cancer community heard so that elected officials will make cancer a top national priority.
3 Herr s Crave The Cure September 2009 Herr Foods Inc. is a proud supporter of women s health. So, to help in the fight against breast cancer, Herr s will once again sell Whole Grain Ribbon Pretzels in pink bags. Herr s will be a proud sponsor of the Making Strides Walk in October. The Herr s Camp Hill team will be giving out the Whole Grain Ribbon pretzels to walkers and supporters at the walk. Stop by their tent to try these wonderful pretzels yourself! A team of Herr s walkers will be participating in the Making Strides Walk as well. The Ribbon Pretzels are a contribution to the fight against Breast Cancer. With your help, I believe we can make a difference, said Ed Herr, President of Herr Foods Inc. Congratulations 2009 Striders!! Come visit our booth and check out our assortment of breast cancer awareness apparel! We accept cash, checks and major credit cards

5 October September HALOS & HEROES TRIBUTE GARDEN We all know that the true Heroes are the individuals that have touched our lives with their courageous fight against cancer. Wouldn t it be wonderful to pay tribute to the HEROES in our lives? We will again have our Halos & Heroes Tribute Garden at the Harrisburg Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk on Saturday October 17th along Riverfront Park. Tribute signs can be purchased in HONOR of a cancer survivor or current cancer patient, in MEMORY of someone who has lost their battle to cancer, or in APPRECIATION of a caregiver or someone special. Signs can be purchased before the walk, or on the day of the walk, for a suggested donation of $ To order your sign in advance, complete the form on the opposite page and send it back with payment to the American Cancer Society at the address provided on the form. Signs can also be purchased the day of the Walk at the garden site. All tribute signs are arranged at the garden site, an area of the walk where we encourage meditation and reflection with special music being provided by Janie Womack & Julie Lowery (acoustic guitar & vocals). Come share in this special day and spend some time honoring our loved ones in the Halos and Heroes garden reflecting and rejoicing in the lives of those who have touched so many of us. Remember Hope Starts Here and a Cure is in our Future **IMPORTANT NOTE ABOUT DAY OF EVENT PARKING Thank you to the Harrisburg Parking Authority for allowing the participants of Making Strides Against Breast Cancer to use the City Island and Market Square Parking Garages FREE OF CHARGE on the day of the event!
