1 1 DISTRICT 22-D BULLETIN Issue 3 September 2017 Moving Forward to Score DG Charlie s Message Hello My Fellow Lions, Lioness and Leos, At the end of August, we had the official District Kickoff Dinner/ Meeting (PSTM.) The District had a fantastic group of Lions that attended. It was a great time of learning and fellowship. The visitations have started this month of September. We have been to two clubs thus far. They were both great clubs to visit; we all had a wonderful time at each. As our clubs in the District start meeting and planning what we are to do for the year, always remember that We are here to Serve. We need to be out working in the communities to aid those who are not as fortunate as we are. Spreading the word of what we do and who we are is a great opportunity to show what we stand for out in the community. Let us work in helping those who suffer from diabetes, pediatric cancer as well as hunger, environment, youth and vision. As we go about our daily lives, let us not forget the fellow Lions that we have lost. They are the ones that have kept Lions in our District strong and together. We thank them from the bottom of our hearts. Do not forget to give to LCI donations for the disaster victims! 2 2 MOVING FORW ARD TO SCORE First Vice District Governor Having the Courage Dear Fellow Loins, Without a doubt I know that everyone in this district has touched my life. With great joy and warmth I would like to thank each and every Lion that said a prayer for me, sent me a get well card or called me to see how I was doing when I had my surgery and my little set back. All these combined have allowed me to heal and get back on track with the district. There have been two visitations that have been completed so far this year. I can already see that DG Charlie has a great message to put out to the clubs. So listen very closely as he travels to your club and really take it to heart what he has to say. I have seen greatness in this district through the reports, newsletters and the first two visitations. All of these say that every club in the district is on a road that leads them up a great hill. But this hill is not a smooth one by any chance. There are many rocks that make the road rough; like how to keep our members, get new ones as well as other membership problems. Then there are the bumps in the road as far as fund raising. I have heard of clubs having to rethink some of the fund rising that they do. Spare not; all clubs will come through with great valor and do many great this in this Lion s year. So my fellow Lions let us not sit in the darkness of the eclipse but yet push forward with our hearts for the many great things I know this district can and will do. First Vice District Governor John Burris

25 25 MOVING FORWARD TO SCORE NEWS FROM THE DISTRICT Would You Like To Have Some Fun? Submitted by: LBLC Member Larry Smith A few weeks ago, I was talking to a fellow Lion about his interest in helping people in Delaware that have an opioid problem. He had an idea that Lions could be a big help in preventing the use of this killer drug by becoming mentors for school children who are identified as being at risk. (Not just the Lord Baltimore Lions but, all the Lions in Delaware that want to serve in this role.) This is when I told him about my mentoring at the Indian River School District Lord Baltimore Elementary School. I got started doing this fun work after I was part of the Lions eye screening with other Lions at the L.B. school. Sitting at the table looking at and talking to these little angles across from me was just so much fun that I wanted more, so I signed up to be a mentor. I must say that I am getting more out of helping my mentoree, Austin then I could have imagined. Now, I m sure that being a mentor to a young adult who is addicted to these drugs is not the same as mentoring a 10-year-old but, think about it. Isn t that the point? Drug addiction is preventable and the most effective education strategy is to help young people early before they lose their way. Mentors can make all of the difference in the world to help prepare them to set goals and make important life decisions. If this would not be a kick and make you feel great then I don t know what else to tell you. Can you schedule/volunteer an hour a week to help a child in one of your area schools? Check out the below website and call them with any questions. Creative Mentoring 100 West 10 th. Street, Suite 1115 Wilmington, DE Phone;

26 26 NEWS FROM THE DISTRICT Hello Friends, Eight Lord Baltimore Lions attended this event to raise awareness of the opioid epidemic in Delaware and in the country. There were 308 overdose deaths last year in DE. There were over 30 men, women, addicts in recovery, children of addicts, parents of addicts, friends and family of those in addiction and those that have overdosed. There were testimonials of recovery and the struggle to stay sober. There were announcements of recent deaths because of overdoses. The Chief of Ocean View PD Kenneth McLaughlin spoke and acknowledged our presents at this event. He told of what it was like only a few years ago when the opioid problem increased dramatically when addicts would be encountered or ask, no make that plead for him and his officers for help. It broke his heart, he said because then there was very few treatment facilities or medical help available. The hopeful news is that today there are more places addicts can get help in Delaware. The Chief of the Georgetown PD was also there for this event. I was very proud of our Lions that attended this event and for the support of the Lord Baltimore Lions Club,form 22-D and especially the clubs in our area and their Zone and Region chairs. There is plenty of opportunity across the state of Delaware for the Lions, as the worlds largest service organization to get out in front of this crisis and help to make a difference. In association with Attack Addiction we are exploring ways to help the community especially the elementary and middle school children and their parents to become better educated on the death and brain damage caused by these powerful drugs. Addiction is preventable and education is the key. If you have ideas, suggestion or contacts that will help us to accomplish this please contact me. Thank You, Lion Paul Bolton FYI event sponsor pauline.powell@attackaddiction.org Sussex County Chapter of attack addiction, Chapter Co-Leader

27 27 NEWS FROM THE DISTRICT Lions Club Mentors for Delaware Students who are at risk? Submitted by: Paul Bolton LBLC This idea came up in a conversation with the Indian River School District Curriculum Development Coordinator Dr. Luanne Hudson. What is a mentor? A mentor is a person or friend who guides a less experienced person by building trust and modeling positive behaviors. An effective mentor understands that his or her role is to be dependable, engaged, authentic, and tuned into the needs of the mentee. Today, most youth development organizations recognize the importance of a child having a caring responsible adult in their lives. For children who come from less than ideal circumstances, mentoring can be a critical ingredient towards positive youth outcomes. The word mentor comes from the character "Mentor" in Homer's epic tale, The Odyssey. Mentor was a trusted friend of Odysseus, the king of Ithaca. When Odysseus fought in the Trojan War, Mentor served as friend and counsel to Odysseus' son Telemachus. Riverside Webster s II New College Dictionary 1995 defines a mentor as a wise and trusted teacher or counselor. The act of mentoring is a series of ongoing and little successes. You will be able to make a real impact through consistent and ongoing relationship building. Source Many of the Delaware schools need mentors and I feel that Lions Club Members would be ideal mentors. We have one in our club and he said that he gets way more out of the experience then you could imagine. If you are up for the challenge here it is-contact Creative Mentoring at 100 West 10th Street, Suite 1115 Wilmington, DE phone: You will need to fill out a registration form, there is a background check and a 3 hr. block of training in Frankfort. The program kicks off in Oct. when you will begin meeting with your mentee for 1 hr. a week. The emphases is on relationship and character building rather then academics. If you have the heart to serve the needs of these young people and just perhaps make a major difference in their lives and the choices that they make DO IT! I hope that I will see many you Lions in October in the mentoring program.
