3 DISTRICT GOVERNOR S MESSAGE Lions, It s a real treat for me to address all the Lions of District N4 as your District Governor. I know that we are going to make a great team working together. My slogan this year is Make a difference. This slogan can be used in a couple of ways. Lions of N4 have already been making a difference in the lives of the people we serve in our communities. I saw from the monthly membership reports that I received from you last year, that you have already made a very big difference in their lives. You catered to seniors, you provided opportunities for youth to grow and to have fun, you supported the needy and anyone who required a little help, just to name a few things that you did. The slogan Make a difference can also apply to what we plan to accomplish in this Lions year. International President Wayne A. Madden has as one of his goals to build stronger clubs and grow membership. One of my goals is also to build stronger clubs and grow membership by increasing the number of clubs in N4 by at least one; increase the number of women in our clubs from 39% to 45% of the membership; having 50% of the N4 clubs complete the Club Excellence Programme. With your help, this can only make our clubs stronger and grow our membership to make a difference in our communities. I am very proud of the Lions who have stepped forward to Make a difference in N4 by offering their talents and enthusiasm by serving as District Executives, Club Executives, Zone Chairs and Committee Chairs. There is a wealth of experience and ideas here to help us all make a difference in how we serve. One thing that we have to pay particular attention to this year is communication. I will try to make sure that you know what is happening and what you can use to continue to be great Lions. Make sure that everyone in your club gets a chance to see what s in the District Governor s monthly newsletters. Check often on the Lions Clubs International and the N4 websites to keep abreast of what is happening in Lionism, in the world, in the district and in your clubs. Communication is a two-way street. Make sure that you send the monthly membership reports to Lions Clubs International, to the District and Vice-District Governor. Let me know by the 15th of each month what your club s accomplishments are. Send me notices and pictures for the DG Newsletter so you can share with the other clubs. Also, let your communities know what you are doing for Lionism update your web-page, put up posters, contact your local paper and tell everyone about what your Lions Club does and how it Makes a difference. Let s work together to keep our clubs, our district and our communities great. Yours in Lionism, District Governor Gail

4 Lions, From 2 nd Vice-District Governor First of all, I want to take this opportunity to thank you for electing me as your 2 nd VDG at the Gander DGO. I look forward to working with you as we endeavour to fulfill the goals and objectives of DG Gail and Lions International. While most of our clubs are relatively inactive during the summer months, nevertheless it is very important that the club secretaries complete and submit their monthly activities report in a timely manner. It is my hope that all clubs place major emphasis on increasing our membership. This can only become a reality if each and every Lion makes it a priority. Fellow Lions, if it is to be; then it s up to me. Let s do it. I would also like to see every club in our district make a special effort to financially support our Lions Max Simms Memorial Camp. This facility is Ours. The Lions family in this province built it. Our Lions family continue to operate and maintain it. This is a tremendous asset to not only people in our province with disabilities but to many others. It is something that we should all be proud of. Enjoy the remainder of this wonderful weather. I look forward to seeing many of you at the Marystown DGO and throughout the year. My contact information will be available in our new district directory. Yours in Lionism, Lion Harry (editor s note When Lion Harry wrote this message to you, he was still the 2nd Vice-District Governor. Since the N4 Cabinet meeting on August 12, 2012, Lion Harry can now be addressed as 1st Vice-District Governor. I know that he will do an excellent job.) District Governor Gail and husband, Lion Jerry, meet International President Wayne A. Madden and his wife, Lion Linda, at the International Lions Clubs Convention in Busan, South Korea.

7 FROM MULTIPLE DISTRICT GLOBAL MEMBERSHIP TEAM COORDINATOR Fellow Lions of Multiple District N We have new chairpeople for the Global Membership Team in three of the districts and we believe that once the other members of their team are in place that we will see an increase in membership in all of the districts. We ask for your support in each of the districts morally and financially. We cannot do anything without your support in both of these areas. Your district governors as well as your district GMT and GLT are counting on you to help them achieve the goals they set for the Lions year As a Lion you understand the difference your club makes in your community. That is why we need to rejuvenate and grow our membership. We boost enthusiasm and generate new ideas for service projects. This helps us build leadership skills. Our community is what we make it and that is why when we form new club it provides individuals the chance to do something they care about. No two lions clubs are alike, because, no two Lions are alike. A new club allows young members to focus on community service projects and helps encourage family and women membership. It helps remove the uncomfortable issue of seniority and leadership by long time members. With new clubs we continue to enable more Lions to make a difference. The future of Lionism depends on us as we continue to recruit new members. We became the world s largest service organization one club at a time. In speaking of communities, lions and wolves were compared to humans. A lion is considered King of the jungle and his sight is better than a human being; the wolf pack knows who it is and those in the pack exist for each other. Some are hunters or caregivers or jokesters, but each seems to gravitate to the role he/she does best The wolf s attitude is always based upon the question What is best for the pack?. This is a marked contrast to us humans who will often sabotage our organizations, families, or business, if we do not get what we want. It has been said that "if you always do what you always did you will always get what you always got ". We want to improve the way we do things and to have better, more informed active clubs. Lions Clubs International formed Global Membership Teams and Global Leadership Teams. With the resources LCI have introduced such as Club Excellence Programs, Extension Workshops and Campus Clubs, we can set our goals and put plans in place to achieve them. We need Sponsoring Lions Clubs and Sponsoring Lions. We have committed Chair people in place in all of our districts who will work with their committees and by working with the zone chairs in open discussion we will be able to save our organization. We need to review our districts to see how many clubs have less than 20 members and how many clubs have not added any new members in the past five years. That could be our starting point to return to where we were as an organization. On our websites and in anything we send out re publication we should be saying "new members welcome ". One of our goals this year is to have at least one extension workshop planned in each district before December 2013 and to have at least 2 Club Excellence Programs completed before February We know this will help in formation of new regular clubs as well as branch clubs. We know you want to change and improve our organization as you have all volunteered. We will help by supplying materials that you can use in your clubs. We plan on regular communication through , telephone, webinars, and go to meetings on the internet. We will use whatever resources we can get our hands on but the most important thing we can do is to communicate with each other so that we can learn how to conduct an extension workshop and how to form campus clubs. If you have any suggestions or questions, please me at mooneylen@live.com or contact your Global Membership Team Coordinator. Yours in Lionism PCC Len Mooney

8 LCIF MEASLES INITIATIVE Dear Fellow Lions, Right now all over the world, there are children who are sick with a fever, runny nose, swollen eyes and cough. Over time, a rash appears. This is no ordinary childhood sickness. This is measles, and it can be deadly. Parents throughout the world experience their child becoming sick with measles just because they do not have access to a simple preventative vaccine. I've always believed that one person can make a difference, but that by acting together, we are able to do so much more. Last year, I challenged you to plant one million trees. You not only met that challenge, you exceeded it by planting 10 million trees. October will mark the anniversary of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation's challenge to Lions - raise US$10 million to help eliminate measles to be matched by the Gates Foundation with US$5 million. I not only believe that we will meet their challenge in the coming months, I believe that we can exceed it. This year, we will help millions of children around the world and confirm why the Gates Foundation knows we are such valuable partners. Thanks to many generous Lions, donations to the One Shot, One Life: Lions Measles Initiative have reached more than US$5 million. But, Lions and LCIF are just halfway to our goal. There is still work to be done. Measles kills hundreds of children each day. Many others suffer from severe complications, including blindness, brain damage and hearing loss. With an inexpensive vaccine made possible by the Measles Initiative, Lions have the power to ensure that children around the world have access to a healthier childhood through a simple vaccination. When we believe, nothing is impossible. It's time to get involved. Sincerely, Wing-Kun Tam Chairperson, Lions Clubs International Foundation

9 Constitution & By Laws Report for 12 August 2012 Cabinet Meeting Committee Members: PDG Frank Antle, PDG Gerald Hutchings; Chair Claudette Coombs The Committee has met in person and electronically to plan a strategy for the next three years. The priorities for the Lions year are: 1. to ensure that past changes to the Policy Manual have been updated and placed on-line for the beginning of the Lions year; 2. to review the Policy Manual for necessary District updates and alignment with the MD-N and LCI Constitution & By Laws; 3. to review the Policy Manuals of LCI, MD-N, N-4 and other Districts and the operation of the District N-4, to en sure that our District Policy Manual provides guidance for its Lions in the best and most efficient operation of their Clubs. 4. to assist the District Governor and Cabinet in the efficient operation of the District; 5. to use District resources (eg. website, Newsletter, District Meetings) with the District Governor s approval, to educate N-4 Lions about the content and usefulness of the Policy Manual and the Constitution & By Laws documents. This would include a regular newsletter article on specific issues of the documents, which are of interest to Clubs. Progress to date: 1. Policy Manual changes previously approved by Cabinet and the general membership, have been collected and PDG Frank Antle has incorporated those changes into the electronic document and posted the updated Policy Manual on-line. 2. The Policy Manual has been reviewed and compared to LCI and MD-N documents by the committee, who also enlisted the support of Past CST Gerald Coombs. Numerous updates, clerical changes, clarifications and inclusions are being prepared for submission to Cabinet and the membership for approval at the October 2012 District Convention. 3. The Committee is continuing to review District and other documents, to identify areas and topics which could be included in the District Policy Manual to support Leadership Development, Lions growth and Club operations. A revised format is being drafted to make the document more user-friendly. PDG Frank has contacted past District Chairs to receive their input on recommendations for updating their committee s descriptions and operations. 4. Committee Members have reviewed current District, MD-N and LCI documentation and PDG Frank has provided the District Governor with a description, and summary, of such relevant documentation as needed, to assist her in meeting current needs to establish a complete Cabinet Executive for With the District Governor s permission, a regular item will be placed in the monthly District Newsletter, to provide relevant information to all Lions about the operational expectations for the District and all Clubs. This will commence with the first District Newsletter. The Committee has also discussed a long-term plan to include regular monitoring and review of the Policy Manual and a year-two plan to review the Constitution and By Laws. The Committee will operate on the premise that any Lion is welcome to approach them with a question about the content or interpretation of the Policy Manual or the Constitution and By Laws. However, the Committee can only act at the request of the District Governor. The Committee will work closely with the District Governor, Executive and Cabinet, especially the Budget and Audit and the Long Range Planning Committees. Respectfully submitted by the Constitution and By Laws Committee: Lion Claudette Coombs, Chair Lion PDG Frank Antle Lion PDG Gerald Hutchings

We have hoped that this fund would go up 10,000 or 15,000 dollars and stay at that limit until it is needed. To date we have contributed almost 5000 dollars which I thank the clubs who contributed to for, it is a great start but we can do better. I am now asking for all the clubs who have not made an effort to contribute that you go back to your clubs and ask to send some money to the District Disaster Fund. We really do need this fund another disaster can happen at anytime. All you have to do is look back at when Igor hit our fair province look what happened to a lot of your friends and relatives we really do need to be prepared. SEND your contribution to CST Jennifer with check made to DISTRICT N4 Note on the check that it is for the District Disaster Fund. I thank you all for your support and look forward to building this fund to the 10,000 or 15,000 dollars. Yours in Lionism Lion Sam Lion Sam Wells PDG Chair District N4 Disaster Fund

14 Good day Fellow Lions, SIGHT CONSERVATION AND WORKWITH THE BLIND REPORT TO CABINET MEETING, AUG. 12, 2012 I would first of all like to offer my appreciation to District Governor Gail and/or CST Jennifer for presenting this report on my behalf. I am unable to attend this meeting as I am assisting the CCB (Canadian Council of the Blind) and VISUAL (Visually Impaired Students and Seniors Undertaking Active Living) with a Blind Golf Clinic today in St. John s and tomorrow (Aug. 13) in Gander. We are expecting persons at our clinic in St. John s and 35+ at our clinic in Gander. The clinic in Gander will capture Blind and Visually Impaired Persons all across the Province who will be attending the Adult Camp for the Blind being held at the Lion Max Simms Memorial Camp in Bishop s Falls from Aug I have been asked by this year s Camp Coordinator, Michelle Bartram, to pass along sincere thanks from the CCB and the Visually Impaired of this Province to the 36 Lions Clubs from across the Province who have sponsored 60 of the 73 campers attending this year s camp. I also wish to again extend my sincere thanks to the Goulds, Grand Bank, Mount Pearl, Portugal Cove-St. Philips, Pouch Cove, St. John s Health Care and the St. John s Lions Club members who so generously offered both financial and personal assistance ensuring the tremendous success of the 2012 Atlantic Sports and Recreation Weekend for the Blind held in St. John s from May Participants from all four Provinces passed along their thanks, gratitude and congratulations to the Organizing Committee who, in participants opinions, ran the most organized and enjoyable Games for the past 20 years. All the Clubs in the greater St. John s area mentioned above were involved in the Organizing Committee and all need to be commended for a job well done. There were a total of 72 Blind and Visually Impaired Individuals participating in these games 42 from the Province of NL. In actual fact, 35 Newfoundlanders were first time participants at these games. Many of them had such a good time they are already starting to make plans to attend next year s games in Moncton. A special vote of thanks is to be sent out to Lion Hubert Driscoll of Portugal Cove-St. Philips Lions Club who has expressed an interest in continuing to work with Blind and Visually Impaired Individuals. He has been working with our Blind Lawn Bowlers over the summer 1 to 2 times a week and they are very appreciative of all his help as a lawn bowling guide, not to mention his assistance with transportation. Pouch Cove Lions Club were also assisting the Blind this year by hosting a summer picnic for some 30 members of the St. John s Chapter of the CCB. By all reports a great time was had by all. I wish to remind all of our clubs to remember our commitment to Helen Keller back in 1928 to be Knights of the Blind. As we head into a new year of service projects in our community Reach Out to the Blind, invite them to be members of your clubs, or ask them if there is anything we as Lions can do to help them in their daily routines. A reminder to all Clubs in our District, if I m not advised of your involvement with the Blind or projects related to the Blind then I cannot report on them in Monthly Reports or Cabinet Meeting/Convention Reports. Please advise me so that I can include your activities in my upcoming reports. Don t forget to continue work on collecting used eye glasses and our Journey for Sight.. All things being equal I ll see you in Marystown in the Fall. Respectfully Submitted Lion Don Connolly, Chair
