1 October Monthly service Special points of interest Rise in diabetes could bankrupt NHS More than a million people in the past 10 years have been diagnosed with diabetes, an increase of 60% This bulletin is free to Interested people in Pharma & Healthcare Please send names of new subscribers to Jackie@wavedata.co.uk If you have articles, comments or story ideas, please send them to the above With this increase, the disease is threatening to bankrupt the NHS Diabetes UK has said that more must be done to highlight the importance of prevention. They have also said The costs of treating diabetes will continue to spiral out of control and threaten to bankrupt the NHS. Now is the time for action, Inside this issue: Lloyds pharmacies in hospitals As part of Lloyds expansion plans, they are looking at taking control of pharmacies in hospitals. It s understood that Lloyds will be talking to health chiefs about taking over NHS pharmacies. February this year, Lloyds partnered with an accident and emergency department for the first time to see if the service could help to ease the pressure on the NHS. The 1m trial, funded by Lloyds, saw it start a pharmacy-led clinic to provide treatment for common ailments such as minor burns, scalds and earache. Latest Apple health app Apple iphones and watches may soon be able to identify when someone's having an epileptic seizure, allowing them to call for help. Researchers at Johns Hopkins University have developed an app that can track and measure seizure symptoms. Sensors on the phone or watch app will measure heart rate, movement and other data as the seizure progresses. 3 Page 3 Monthly service Northern Ireland linked with San Francisco, for live operations Northern Ireland is at the centre of cutting-edge pioneering heart interventions that are leading the way across the world. Three live operations from Belfast City Hospital were, this week, beamed to the largest cardiovascular interventional conference in San Francisco. About 450 health professionals from around the world watched cardiologists perform procedures on three women that had serious heart complications. Northern Ireland realised that they was going to experience a massive cardiovascular problem and set to work looking at alternative ways to perform non-invasive heart surgery. Speaking to the BBC just minutes before the live link-up with America, Dr Colm Hanratty, an interventional cardiologist, said it was a proud moment for the team. "We are sharing our skills, very specialist techniques that don't involve open heart operations but, instead, intervention through the arm or leg, giving little access to the heart," he said. "Until recently this wasn't available. People had to go on living with their debilitating conditions or some may have died." utm_source=communicator&utm_medium= &utm_content=untitled9&utm_campaign=abhi+news+review+16+october++% The blood moon taken by Susan Albrighton from Lexon Price Watch.UK - Double-digit increase in atorvastatin prices Double-digit price changes were rare amongst recently-launched generics last month, although there was a notable rise in the average price of 28-tablet packs of atorvastatin 20mg. The 12% increase to 0.80 (US$1.22) came despite one supplier dropping the lowest available trade price by 9% to 0.43 (see Figure 1). 4 Page 4 Beta Charitable Trust is a registered charity based in the UK that has worked passionately in some of the most destitute and deprived areas of the world to provide basic human rights to the poorest of individuals. We believe that clean water, sanitation, food, medical care and education are the fundamental rights of every human being. With the continued support of our generous and dedicated donors and supporters we have managed to widen the areas we work in and are changing the lives of more people than ever before. The charity is founded upon on three principal objectives: Advancing education Preserving health Relieving poverty, distress and sickness We are committed to supporting short term relief & disaster projects as well as long term humanitarian elevation projects regardless of race, nationality, geography, creed and colour. Projects are carried out on both a national and an international level with the majority of our work taking place in the UK, Africa, Asia and the Middle East. The size and extent of projects varies from large scale water and irrigation projects to the distribution of solar lamps to those without electricity, and cataract surgeries to help people regain their sight. Beta Charitable Trust runs with a zero administration charge policy, resulting in every precious penny being utilised solely for the project it was intended. For more information about our work and for donations, please visit: New blood test to rule out heart attack A study has found that a high sensitivity blood test in A&E departments across the country could rule out heart attack in two thirds of people presenting them with chest pain patients were involved in the study; the blood test will determine the maximum level of troponin (a protein released during a heart attack). Current methods of testing if a patient is having a heart attack, involve testing the levels of troponin when first admitted and then again 12 hours later. The new test would only have to be done once.
