Introductions and Welcome Ann Smith welcomed all to the Council and introduced the interim Head of Patient and Carer Involvement, Sam Gutteridge. 2. Minutes and Matters Arising The previous minutes and actions were reviewed by Ann Smith. Amendments were noted by Sam Gutteridge. Technical failures currently causing CC member s not to arrive were discussed. Trust administrator, Asema Anwar was identified as the current contact for the CC and Sam Gutteridge proposed that Ann Smith work with her to update the list. Veronica Kamerling asked that the technical issue be corrected by working with the Trust s web-team, mentioning a temporary work-around, use of a gmail account which is not affected by the issue. The Ethics Committee was reported to have met and Ela Pathak-Sen did notify the CC. Update on co-designing of carer centred training with the Recovery Collage was discussed. The following ideas were suggested by members: Devising an extensive programme of hot topics Adapting Rethink s Caring and Coping course Strategies when caring for aggressive individuals Page 1 of 6

2 Coping strategies for dementia carers Information s and online training for carers with difficulty attending courses Attending bi/annual refresher courses (first aid cited) Thematic review based carer training Health professional awareness training Ann Smith asked members to continue ing her suggestions. The planned CC leaflet was discussed and Karen Doherty s action to convene a communications sub group. It was noted that this had not yet happened. Key ideas suggested were: Inclusion of a glossary (Already supplied to Karen Doherty by Veronica Kamerling) Local information sign-posting Inclusion of a leaflet in the Harrow Encyclopedia folder Sign-up to Carers UK Friendly Environment Link-in with Carers UK Devise a Triangle of Care Carers Passport Target support for new carers Review of information for carers and health professionals Ann Smith asked Sam Gutteridge to check what content she has received from Karen Doherty prior to her departure. Sam highlighted a patient pack created as part of an aims presentation, using mental health inpatient consultation at St Charles Hospital. Veronica Kamerling suggested linking-in carer information with future aims and inspections. Chandu Shah refreshed members on Mike Cocker, CEO of Harrow Carers, interest in the CC and the CNWL s implementation of Triangle of Care. Chandu was concerned at the move to a 100 joining fee being implemented by Harrow Carers and it s impact on local users. Hla Htay pointed out the Carer Trust funds a free service in Westminster. Action: Sam Gutteridge to arrange for Ann Smith to work with Asema Anwar, updating the Council list to include the exploration of alternate gmail addresses for those who are having difficulty receiving them. Sam Gutteridge to contact Tobi Welstand-Keyrk, deputy manager at CNWL Recovery collage to initiate a training sub-group and update Council members. Sam Gutterdge to invite Mike Cocker, CEO of Harrow Carers to attend CC meeting. Sam Gutterdge to invite all members to attend a Comms sub-group to produce leaflets. 3 3. Milton Keynes Triangle of Care Sam Gutteridge introduced Amanda Baxter and Nash Kahwa from the inpatient Mental Health units in Milton Keynes. Amanda Baxter informed the CC that her team was preparing to increase engagement with carers. Amanda spoke of the challenges, including issues around information sharing and low attendance at former local carer forums. Amanda said they were getting day-to-day support right but could improve on the following: Training Involvement Emotional and wellbeing support Transparency Amanda gave an over view of the acute mental health inpatient wards at Milton Keynes: TOPAS 25 acute inpatient beds for older adults Campbell Centre 38 acute inpatient beds for adults including one for young patients. o Hazel ward: male : 19 beds o Wheller ward: female: 19 beds o 1 close-observation CAHMS bed for 16-18yr old Amanda highlighted examples of the range of conditions both wards receive: Dementia Anxiety Depression Psychosis Nash Kahwa indicated the visiting procedure for carers on MK acute wards: No booking required 3 visitor rooms with spares available Reception controls visiting facilities Nash Kahwa spoke about the CNWL takeover of services in Milton Keynes which included a lot of restructuring and investment and highlighted the development of carers welcome packs and a welcome DVD to play in reception. Nash Kahwa outlined how the Triangle of Care is being piloted in Milton Keynes. Veronica Kamerling spoke of problems cascading communication and awareness of ToC to carers in general. Nash Kahwa indicated the situation is improving where there are now carer champions on wards and MK Council identifies carers to refer for assessment, but noted that cuts had significantly reduced the number of staff available to support inpatients. 4 Sam Gutteridge referred to handover plans left by Karen Doherty which indicated that as Kensington and Chelsea were next in line to take forward actions from the thematic review that they might also discuss piloting ToC. Sam Gutteridge informed the group that once ToC has been implemented across MH Inpatient Units the next stage is to roll it out in community services. Amanda Baxter spoke of the safety and support challenges when bringing inpatient and community services together. Amanda cited an example of Dementia care link-ins that cross inpatient, care homes and community services that has to support both the stable and unwell. Members highlighted the use of carer cafes and community centres: MK community centre which offers basic CAB and housing support on Mon. evenings. Carers Café Dementia Café Social health and music group Nash Kawah spoke about the need for greater link-in with: Out patient outreach via community teams Ex-service user follow up Staff involvement Peer support workers Carers Age UK integration Alzheimer s Society integration Ann Smith told of the difficulty carers often experience trying to access services but mentioned a positive experience of carers who are allowed to take their dogs to a hospital garden. Action: Sam Gutteridge to request and send out to members a copy of the presentation Nash Kawah was to show to the CC during the MK visit. 4. Carers Council work plan 2018 Carers Conference 2018 Ann Smith spoke of the occurrence of both the 2018 Carers Conference and Carers Week (11 th -17 th June) Ann agreed the following in principal: Conference to occur in October Triangle of Care awareness will be a primary focus Page 4 of 6

5 Funding already secured by the CNWL Members suggested the following improvements: Improving efficiency of reception Separating arrival and workshop sign in procedures Increasing capacity of workshops Changing locations of workshops to larger rooms Funnelling attendees with high levels of carer frustration into special areas Preparing to do a lot more preparatory work Deciding early on which speakers to invite Members wondered if the previous venue, Friend s House, was really suitable for the conference and the Welcome Centre was suggested as an alternative. Ann indicated that the CC would like greater input into how this year s conference is managed. Sam Gutteridge asked how the CC meet and discuss between themselves and Ann said typically only by . Ann asked members to send further thoughts and ideas to her about the conference. (Including those from Milton Keynes.) Thematic Review: Sam Gutteridge updated the CC, indicating that the Hillingdon task and finish phase was nearly complete and Kensington and Chelsea would start next. Sam asked for suggestions for reps. The following CC reps were offered: Hillingdon: Ann Smith Harrow: Chandu Shah Westminster: Hla Htay Other: Veronica Kamerling (available if required) Sam indicated that local authority reps were also required. Carers Week 11 th -17 th June: Members were asked to think about how the CC can link into Carers Week. Roadshows: Members suggested Brent and Wembley as suitable locations to hold the next roadshow. Members further suggested approaching the following groups to invite: Carers Network, Westminster, Kensington and Chelsea, Hammersmith and Fullham. Dial-in-services Hillingdon Carers Page 5 of 6

6 Milton Keynes Patient and Carers service groups Rethink (identify who to contact) QI programme Sam Gutteridge informed the Council that the Trust s QI training programme was being rolled out and members would be facilitated to attend. Further information will be provided. Actions: Sam Gutteridge to check invite-status for CC in relation to forthcoming QI event 16 th April pm Members to continue sending Ann Smith ideas and suggestions about the Carers Conference 5. AOB The website CarersTrust.org : was cited as a useful place for carers to learn about general carer support, including assessments. Sam Gutteridge updated members on the current migration of Trust involvement payments into a direct debit system. The change-over is still in progress but members should be ready to provide their bank details. Chandu Shah will approach CNWL Comms director, Mike Waddington and will also ask if the CNWL Hidden Gems scheme can be extended beyond staff. Veronica Kamerling spoke about her co-dependency training workshop.
