Your Guide to Fundraising For Mouth Cancer Action Month
Thank you for taking action on mouth cancer Mouth Cancer Action Month aims to raise awareness of the signs and symptoms as well as the associated risk factors for the disease. In this guide you will find everything you need to make that happen. The great thing about fundraising is that anyone can do it. From cake sales to blue lipstick selfies, every penny counts. On behalf of mouth cancer patients across the UK, thank you for your support. THE FACTS Latest figures show there were 6,767 people diagnosed with mouth cancer in the UK That s 18 people every day one person diagnosed every 77 minutes Mouth cancer cases have almost doubled in the last decade and it is one of few cancers that experts predict will continue to increase in the coming years Mouth cancer is ranked the 16th most common cancer in the UK The lifetime risk of developing mouth cancer is 1 in 84 for men and 1 in 160 for women Cancer of the tongue and oral cavity are the most common forms of mouth cancer, followed then by the throat. Lip, neck and other mouth cancers make up the rest of cases Mouth cancer is twice as common in men than women 86% of cases are diagnosed in those over 50 Mouth cancer rates per head of population are significantly higher in Scotland compared with England, Northern Ireland and Wales More than 90% of mouth cancers in men and 85% in women are linked to lifestyle and environmental factors More than 2,000 people lose their life to mouth cancer in the UK every year There are more deaths from mouth cancer than there are through road traffic accidents Mouth cancer also claims more lives per year than cervical and testicular cancer combined Two-thirds of us know somebody with cancer
Where to start... DECIDE ON YOUR EVENT Make a target Raising money is great, but it s even better if you have a target. Be as ambitious as possible and aim for the sky! DECIDE ON YOUR EVENT BUY WHAT YOU NEED RAISE MONEY ONLINE There are many different types of fundraising activity, so it s up to you as to which one you would like to do! If you are in need of some inspiration have a look at our most popular events. THINK ABOUT THE W S Once you know what you are doing, decide when you re doing it, where it will take place and who your target audience is. Don t put all your eggs in one basket have plenty of options. The great thing about fundraising is that anyone can get involved, so have different ideas for different audiences. Larger events such as fun runs, cycling or charity walks will take more time to organise, so plan well in advance. You may need to get permission from local councils if there are a lot of people joining in. It is entirely dependent on your event, but it is worth making a shopping list of everything you need. If you are making cakes, having a blue lip selfie fun day or even just a coffee morning, make sure you choose a location to suit. Our webshop has plenty of items to help promote the cause you are supporting. Once you ve decided on what type of event you would like to organise, it s important to work out a budget. Many activities carry no cost at all but it is beneficial in most cases to provide people with written information to take away. You might also consider approaching local businesses for competition prizes, healthy food options or additional funding. Some companies may want to sponsor an event if they think there is a positive community message. This is a really convenient way of getting people to donate. They can do it quickly, and any money collected on the day can also be paid into the account. We also have a sponsorship form you can download and give to family and friends! Don t forget to collect your sponsorship money after the event! Details of how to donate to Mouth Cancer Action Month can be found later on. SHARE YOUR EVENT Once you have all of the above in place, the last thing you need is people! Share the JustGiving link through social media. Send out flyers and posters telling people about your event. You will find plenty of assistance in our downloads area in the form of a press release template.
Some of the best ideas are the simplest POUT THOSE BLUE LIPS DAZZLING DISPLAYS THE CIGARETTE JAR For Mouth Cancer Action Month, we re asking everyone to show their support for the campaign by getting involved and making Wednesday 19 November Blue Wednesday. Buy a Blue Ribbon, blue lipstick or a set of our blue lips. Even pick out something blue, but whatever you do wear it and show your support. Get together with a group of friends or colleagues and take a photo! Post it on social media using #bluelipselfie. One of the best ways to provide information to the public during the month is to set up a display. Use the campaign s free posters, alongside other educational resources available from the Foundation. Balloons are great at drawing attention to any display; try combining these with patient information leaflets, a Mouth Cancer Banner and a Mouth Cancer Self-Examination Checklist. You can also gather useful information on stop smoking groups, alcohol awareness meetings and healthy eating classes, for patients who would like to improve their own lifestyles. By visiting the Mouth Cancer Action Month website you can freely download the directories for your area. You can do a lot with an empty jar... Encourage staff and patients to put their cigarettes in the jar in return for an opportunity to win a great prize draw. They could save money and save their life in the process. At the end of the month have a guess the number of cigarettes competition it s a great way of getting people involved. IF IN DOUBT... Household budgets are tight for many people at the moment. Offering patients or local groups an afternoon of free mouth cancer examinations is a great way to support your local community. It s a good way to promote awareness of the illness, and at the same time help develop the goodwill of your practice. Holding a special event to examine patients or local people within your community promotes early detection, as well as education, not just in the patient themselves but through word of mouth it will also improve awareness among their family and friends too. So whether it s for the whole month, a week, a day, or one afternoon, your participation is crucial and can make a difference.
Challenge yourself... CYCLING If you want cancer to get on its bike, one of the best ways to do that is get on your own! WALKS & RUNS Charity walks and runs are great fun. Earlier this year the British Dental Health Foundation supported Dental Hygienist Christina Chatfield on her 500 Miles 4 Smiles walk from Scotland to Brighton. More than 20,000 was raised through your fantastic generosity, while more than 150 walkers joined the team along the way. Fast forward to now and we are a matter of days away from the annual Mouth Cancer Charity Walk & Run in Hyde Park. It is the biggest walk of its kind, and this year it promises to be bigger than ever before. They are really simple to get involved in, and you can bring the family too! If walking is a little slow-paced for you, then why not consider running? Marathons and half-marathons are wonderful opportunities to raise money for a charity. In 2013 almost 35,000 people raised 53m by running the London Marathon. Even if you re not a fitness fanatic, they re great fun and can be done at your leisure. Cycling for charity is extremely popular. There are plenty of big fundraising rides out there, like the London to Brighton or the Great Manchester Cycle, but many more individuals and teams are taking the plunge and doing their own. Taking part in a charity bike ride is a great way to get on your bike, get fit and make a difference all at the same time. They come in all shapes and sizes, from a five mile family outing to a 1,000 mile epic voyage. ARE YOU A RISK TAKER? Walking, running, cycling and fancy dress are fantastic fundraisers, but if you re a thrill-seeker, they may not be for you. Many of us dream about conquering our fear, and one of the top fears we have in the UK is heights. Cancer patients don t have a choice whether to be scared or not, but YOU do. So, this year, we re asking you to take the plunge and conquer your fear. There are plenty of extreme challenges you could do in order to raise money for mouth cancer. Bungee-jumping, obstacle course, treks, white-water rafting and even skydiving are all great fun and really get people talking!
Take part in our Blue Ribbon Appeal The Blue Ribbon Appeal continues to play a key role in directly engaging people with the issues surrounding mouth cancer, whether it s talking about the risk factors involved, the early warning signs or the benefits of early detection, all can make a difference in improving education and ultimately saving lives. Here s how you can get involved. BLUE RIBBON BADGES This year we are urging everybody to wear a blue ribbon badge with pride. More than 250,000 of you have worn one in the last three years. Each blue ribbon badge costs just 1, but that money goes a long way in helping us to achieve our charitable goals. But don t just buy one for you get your family, friends and colleagues to pitch in too! We want to see as many of you as possible wearing them as a sign of support. To get your blue ribbon badge, click here to purchase one or many, from our online shop. And don t forget to wear them throughout November! BLUE RIBBON KIT Last year, we sent out more than 800 Blue Ribbon Appeal Kits to teams all around the UK so they could promote mouth cancer awareness to their patients, their customers, or their staff. The Blue Ribbon Appeal Kit contains 25 badges, a collection box, a mouth cancer poster for your waiting room and details on how to donate the money raised. Display the box on your reception desk, checkout counter, or in your staff waiting room and use it to engage patients, customers and staff, and talk to them about mouth cancer. You can collect your Blue Ribbon Appeal Kit by clicking here. Blue Ribbon Appeal Kit start from a 25 donation. You can select your size of box to meet your needs. And by asking for just 1 per badge, it also means that the box would not have cost you anything, so there s no excuse not to get involved. And when you have run out of badges, you can simply request more! Remember, mouth cancer deserves our attention all year round. So please show your support by getting involved in the Blue Ribbon Appeal not only through November s Mouth Cancer Action Month but by wearing the badges and having them on your reception desk for patients throughout 12 months of the year.
Just a few great examples... WILLIAM HOWES Mouth Cancer Foundation 500 MILES 4 SMILES When William s uncle was diagnosed with mouth cancer, it was an almighty shock. Less than six months later, he passed away, having almost finished his treatment, during which he showed signs of recovery. William decided to raise money in a very challenging way. If you travel by train from London to Edinburgh, it takes a little under five hours. If ever that feels like a painful journey, think of dental hygienist Christina Chatfield. She walked from Kirriemuir in Scotland to Brighton, a journey encompassing 500 miles. Christina raised in excess of 20,000 for mouth cancer - a tremendous effort! More than 100 volunteers walked alongside her during National Smile Month, raising money for mouth cancer action. Every year the Mouth Cancer Walk in Hyde Park helps to raise invaluable funds to help mouth cancer sufferers. In 2015, it s organiser s the Mouth Cancer Foundation will celebrate it s 10th anniversary, raising valuable awareness and money for mouth cancer. Every year, hundreds of people take part in the walk, which raises thousands of pounds. This year, the British Dental Health Foudnation is delighted to annouce the Mouth Cancer Foundation as charity partner for Mouth Cancer Action Month. BSDHT In 2013, The British Society of Dental Hygiene and Therapy raised 600 for Mouth Cancer Action Month. Together with their 4,000 members, the society raised the money through two mouth cancer screening workshops at their annual conference, highlighting the significant role and influence hygienists and therapists have in the battle against the disease.
How you can donate Donate Online Donate now or head over to our JustGiving page to donate the money online. Don t forget to include Gift Aid in your donations too! Donate by Post From everybody at the British Dental Health Foundation, we would like to say a huge thank you for helping us to raise awareness of mouth cancer. Thanks to your donations we have been able to provide more information and support for children, the elderly and vulnerable, people with special needs and those living in deprivation around the UK, than ever before. As inequalities in oral health continue to grow, and with incidences of mouth cancer on the rise, our role as a leader in oral health education and preventative action becomes ever more crucial. That s why we truly value all the generosity and hard work of our supporters. At its heart, the British Dental Health Foundation is an inclusive organisation that provides opportunities for everyone interested in oral health to participate. Our supporters continue to reflect the diverse range of people and organisations involved, including dentists, oral health professionals, surgeries, companies, huge multinationals and members of the general public.
