Since 2001 he has served as the Director of the Alcohol, Tobacco & Other Drug Research Unit of the South African Medical Research Council (SAMRC) and was Acting Vice President for Intramural Research at the SAMRC between 2012 and Trained in South Africa and the USA in clinical/community psychology and mathematical statistics he has published over 230 indexed journal articles and coauthored two books: Alcohol Policy & Public Health in South Africa and Alcohol and the Developing World: A public Health Perspective. He is a member of the Editorial Boards of Substance Abuse: Treatment, Prevention & Policy; Substance Abuse & Rehabilitation; the African Journal of Drug & Alcohol Studies, Substance Abuse & Rehabilitation, the International Journal of Alcohol & Drug Research, and International Journal of Drug Science, Policy & Law. He has advised provincial/national government on a variety of issues related to alcohol and drug policy. Since 2006 he has been a member of the World Health Organization s Expert Panel on Drug Dependence and Alcohol Problems, and in 2010 was appointed to the technical advisory group of the UNODC/WHO joint programme on drug dependence, treatment and care, and the board of the Global Alcohol Policy Alliance (GAPA). He was appointed chair of the WHO Technical Advisory Group on Alcohol & Drug Epidemiology for 12 months from November Between 2009 and 2016 he was a member of the Global Science Group, European Commission Research on Addiction in Contemporary European Society initiative. Since 2015 he has also served on the Scientific Advisory Committee of the UNODC World Drug Report. He holds a National Research Foundation B1 rating (Internationally Acclaimed Researcher Level 1). In 2017 he was a SAMRC Gold Medal recipient. Prof Neo Morojele (Pretoria) Deputy Director Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drug Research Unit Medical Research Council, Private Bag X385 Pretoria, 0001 South Africa Tel: Neo.Morojele@mrc.ac.za Prof Neo Morojele is a Chief Specialist Scientist and the Deputy Director of the Alcohol Tobacco and Other Drug Research Unit of the South African Medical Research Council. She is also an Honorary Associate Professor in the School of Public Health at the University of the Witwatersrand as well as in the School of Public Health and Family Medicine at the University of Cape Town. She received her first degree in Psychology at the University of Zimbabwe in 1985, an MSc (Psychology of Education) at the Institute of Education of the University of London in 1988, and a PhD in Psychology at the University of Kent at Canterbury, United Kingdom, in During she spent one year at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York on a NIDA/INVEST postdoctoral programme. Prof Morojele has experience in conducting substance abuse research in treatment, school, bar, hospital and community settings. Her current research focuses mainly on alcohol use and HIV; adolescent substance use; and alcohol policy-related investigations. She is the Associate Editor for Africa for the Journal of Substance Use; an Associate Editor of the African Journal of Drug and Alcohol Studies; and a Consulting Editor of the International Journal of Alcohol and Drug Research. Prof Morojele is a member of the WHO Expert Working Group on the Classification of Substance-Related and Addictive Disorders of the International Advisory Group for the Revision of ICD-10 Mental and Behavioural Disorders. Prof Bronwyn Myers (Cape Town) Chief Specialist Scientist Tel: bronwyn.myers@mrc.ac.za Prof Bronwyn Myers is a Chief Specialist Scientist in the Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drug Research Unit of the South African Medical Research Council, where she leads the Intervention Research sub-stream. She has a PhD in Psychology from the University of Cape Town and a M. Soc Sci in Clinical Psychology from University of Natal, Pietermaritzburg. She is registered as a clinical psychologist with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA). She has an honorary appointment at the level of Associate Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Mental Health at the University of Cape Town, where she cochairs the Division of Addiction Psychiatry. Over the last 15 years her work has focused on improving access to and the quality of care for vulnerable populations through delivering behavioural interventions to reduce substance use and HIV risk and integrating evidence-based mental health services into health systems. She is the principal investigator or South African PI of several US NIH-funded clinical trials as well as the holder of a British MRC and Wellcome Trust-funded implementation science grant. Her expertise in substance abuse treatment and HIV has been acknowledged via invitations to serve on an International Reference Group to the United Nations on HIV and Drug Use and World Health Organisation working groups on the development and assessment of global substance abuse treatment services. She is a member of the Scientific Advisory Board for Harm Reduction International, and an affiliate of RTI s Global Gender Center. She serves on the editorial or advisory board of several international journals and is an associate editor for a local journal. Prof Myers has published extensively on the topics of substance use disorders, vulnerable populations, HIV, access to treatment and provision of evidence-based practices for substance use disorders in South Africa. She is a founding member of the South African Young Academy of Science and a recipient of the International Society of Psychology s Psychology for change fellowship award.

2 Prof Nandi Siegfried (Cape Town) Chief Specialist Scientist Tel: Nandi Siegfried is a Chief Specialist Scientist based part-time in the Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drug Research Unit of the South African Medical Research Council. She has a medical degree from the University of Cape Town and an MPH (Hons) from the University of Sydney, Australia. She holds a specialist Fellowship in the College of Public Health Medicine and was a Nuffield Medical Fellow at the University of Oxford from 2004 to 2007, where she obtained a DPhil in Clinical Epidemiology. Her research expertise includes systematic review methodology, the conduct and quality of clinical trials, and using evidence to inform clinical guidelines and policy, primarily in the HIV/AIDS and alcohol and other drug fields. In addition to her ATODRU work, she consults independently including contributing as technical adviser and methodological facilitator of several World Health Organization Guidelines Development Groups. She holds several associate positions including an honorary clinical professorship at the University of California, San Francisco, Department of Epidemiology and Biostatics. Her work in ATODRU focuses on ensuring methodological rigour and promoting interventional research. Belinda Chamberlain (Cape Town) Unit Contracts Administrator Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drug Research Unit Medical Research Council, PO Box Tygerberg 7505 South Africa Tel: belinda.chamberlain@mrc.ac.za Belinda Chamberlain is responsible for assisting the Unit Director and Programme Managers with financial/contractual issues. Some of the tasks include keeping an up-to-date database of projects/contracts, monitoring of income and expenditure reports, preparing certain sections of the annual budget application; assisting with the preparation of the annual parliamentary report; ensuring the optimal function of the unit through ongoing development of knowledge management systems. Ad hoc support to the Unit Director on a broad range of issues such as hosting of international seminars, strategic planning and other events, working with programme managers in developing proposals and dealing with funders. Dr. Catherine O. Egbe (Pretoria) Specialist Scientist Tel: Catherine.egbe@mrc.ac.za Dr. Catherine Egbe is a Specialist Scientist in the Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drug Research Unit of the South African Medical Research Council. She received her first degree in Biology/Education and Masters degree in Guidance and Counselling both from the University of Benin, Nigeria. She obtained a PhD in Psychology and Health Promotion from the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN), Durban South Africa. From 2013 to 2015 Dr. Egbe worked on the Programme for Improving Mental Health (PRIME) and Emerging Mental Health Systems for Low and Middle Income Countries (EMERALD) projects as a postdoctoral Research Fellow of UKZN. She spent 3 months of this period doing research at the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience, Kings College London. From 2015 to October 2017, Dr. Egbe was a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the University of California San Francisco Center for Tobacco Control Research and Education, a WHO collaborating center for tobacco control. Her research at this Center focused on tobacco control in Africa. Dr. Egbe is a member of the Society for Nicotine and Tobacco Research and was a Fall 2016 Global Health Network Spotlight Winner. She is also a member of the Editorial Board of the International Journal on Qualitative Health and Well-being. Dr Nadine Harker Burnhams (Cape Town) Specialist Scientist Tel: nadine.harker@mrc.ac.za Dr Nadine Harker Burnhams is employed as a Senior Scientist in the Alcohol, Tobacco and other Drug Research Unit of the South African Medical Research Council. She completed her PhD at the University of Cape Town and currently holds the position of honorary research associate at the UCT School of Public Health and Family Medicine. She has authored and co-authored peer-reviewed journal articles, technical research reports, and policy documents on the topic of substance abuse prevention, and presented at conferences locally and internationally. She has co-authored a book titled Alcohol, Drugs and Employment. She has advised local, provincial and national government on issues related to alcohol and drug abuse prevention and policy and has acted as a technical advisor and consultant to the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) on the drafting of guidelines for substance abuse prevention initiatives in the workplace as well as the UNODC International Prevention Standards for Drug Use. She has taught various undergraduate and postgraduate courses at the University of Cape Town and Stellenbosch. Dr Burnhams is currently the national head of the South African Community Epidemiology Network on Drug Use (SACENDU), a project that aims to provide community-level public health surveillance of alcohol, tobacco and other drug (ATOD) use trends and associated consequences. Her specific interests are in improving the quality of substance abuse prevention services, monitoring and evaluating the performance and outcomes of such services, and designing and implementing substance abuse prevention services for the work sector.

3 Dr Petal Petersen Williams (Cape Town) Senior Scientist Tel: Dr Petal Petersen Williams is employed as a Senior Scientist in the Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drug Research Unit of the South African Medical Research Council. She has a PhD in Public Health and Family Medicine from the University of Cape Town. She has been an investigator on several studies including several PEPFAR-funded studies of the interface between substance use and HIV, exploration of substance use among pregnant women in health care settings and other substance-related interventions situated within health care settings and worked closely with the Western Cape Department of Health on some of these initiatives. She has authored and co-authored peer-reviewed journal articles and technical research reports and policy documents, and presented at conferences locally and internationally on these topics. Her specific interests include the integration of mental health services in primary health care, monitoring and evaluating the performance and outcomes of such services, and the development and implementation of behavioural interventions aimed at reducing alcohol and drug abuse during pregnancy and among women of child-bearing age. Dr Tara Carney (Cape Town) Specialist Scientist Tel: tara.carney@mrc.ac.za Dr Tara Carney is employed as a Senior Scientist in the Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drug Research Unit of the South African Medical Research Council. She has a PhD from Psychiatry and Mental Health Department from the University of Cape Town. She has been involved in substance abuse projects funded by NICHD, NIAAA, NIDA, and PEPFAR-funded project on drugs and HIV in Southern Africa. Dr Carney is also a Marie Curie Fellow and Work Package Leader on the Code Misused Project funded by the European Union. She has authored and co-authored peer-reviewed journal articles and technical research reports, on the topics of substance abuse screening, brief intervention, HIV prevention for substance users and adolescent substance use and has presented on these topics at local and international conferences, and reviewed articles for peer-reviewed journals. Her specific research interests include intervention work in general and specifically aimed at adolescents who engage in substance use and delinquent behaviour, as well as issues around gender in substance use services. Sebenzile Nkosi (Pretoria) Senior Scientist Tel: sebenzile.nkosi@mrc.ac.za Sebenzile Nkosi is a Senior Scientist in the Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drug Research Unit of the South African Medical Research Council. She holds an MA degree in Research Psychology from the University of the Witwatersrand. She has worked mainly on intervention projects on alcohol consumption, HIV, and ART use. She is studying towards a PhD with University of South Africa (UNISA). Her PhD project entitled Masculinities and Mental Health among Male Inmates and Parolees examines the role of masculinities in sexual violence perpetration and victimisation and the mental health outcomes following such sexual violence experiences. Siphokazi Dada (Cape Town) Senior Scientist Tel: siphokazi.dada@mrc.ac.za Ms Siphokazi Dada is a Scientist in the Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drug Research Unit of the South African Medical Research Council. She has a Master of Public Health Degree (MPH) from the University of London. She is currently registered as a PhD student at the University of Stellenbosch and her area of interest is misuse of over-the-counter and prescription medicines, particularly codeine She manages the South African Community Epidemiology Network on Drug Use, a drug trends monitoring system operational throughout South Africa s nine provinces. She coordinates data collection across sites, analyse data and write reports n for this project. She also participates in other epidemiological research being conducted in the unit. Ms Dada is also a Marie Curie Fellow on the CODEMISUSED Project funded by the European Union.

4 Dr Carrie Brooke-Sumner (Cape Town) Post-doctoral Fellow Dr Carrie Brooke-Sumner is a post-doctoral fellow in the Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drug Research Unit of the South African Medical Research Council. She holds a BSc Honours Degree in Biochemistry and Microbiology from Rhodes University South Africa. She completed a Master s degree in Public Health (specialising in Health Promotion) at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine in 2007, and on returning to South Africa in 2008 worked as a consultant for a variety of NGOs in the disaster response, HIV prevention and youth development sectors (including the Soul City Foundation, Medecins Sans Frontieres, World AIDS Campaign). She has extensive expertise in developing training programmes for community workers and youth peer educators and in delivering interventions for community based health promotion. In 2012 she joined the Programme for Improving Mental Health (PRIME) consortium at the University of Kwazulu Natal (UKZN) as a PhD candidate. Her PhD in Psychology from UKZN focused on developing, piloting and evaluating a community-based psychosocial rehabilitation programme for people with schizophrenia in the North West province of South Africa. Dr Brooke-Sumner joined the SAMRC in January Her role is Implementation & Systems Advisor on the British MRC and Wellcome Trust-funded Project MIND trial. Dr Brooke-Sumner is responsible for the organisational aspects of the trial, including preparing participating health facilities to adopt a new evidence-based counselling intervention using two different models for structuring services. Kim Johnson (Cape Town and Delft) Project Leader Tel: Kim.Johnson@mrc.ac.za Kim Johnson is a Chief Research Technologist in the Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drug Research Unit of the South African Medical Research Council. She has a Master s degree in Psychological Research from the University of Stellenbosch, where she also received training in monitoring and programme evaluation. She works in the Unit s substance abuse services research stream and has more than five years of experience working on randomized controlled trials of substance abuse interventions. Studies that she is currently working includes the Service Quality Measures (SQM) and Young Women s Health CoOp. Jodilee Erasmus (Cape Town) Junior Scientist Tel: Jodilee.erasmus@mrc.ac.za Jodilee Erasmus completed her honours in Psychology and is currently registered as an MPhil student at the University of Cape Town. She is employed as a Junior Scientist within the Alcohol, Tobacco, and Other Drugs Research Unit at the South African Medical Research Council. She is the Western Cape data coordinator for the South African Community Epidemiology Network of Drug Use (SACENDU) Her primary responsibilities include data collection, and collation, analysis and writing She also coordinates fieldwork activities which require site supervision, the supervision of field staff, quality control and project administration. Yuche Jacobs (Cape Town) Senior Research Technologist Tel yuche.jacobs@mrc.ac.za Yuche Jacobs is a Senior Research Technologist in the Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drug Research Unit. He obtained his Honours Degree in Psychology from the University of the Western Cape and is registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as a Registered Counsellor. He is primarily responsible for the training and supervision of lay counsellors on Project MIND, a study focusing on strengthening health systems by incorporating mental health care into chronic disease services. Other key duties include project administration and ensuring effective community engagement through social and media channels. He was recently selected as an AMARI fellow by the Alan J Flisher Centre for Public Mental Health at the University of Cape Town to complete his MPhil in Public Mental Health. This will serve to further develop his interests and expertise in the integration of mental health services in primary health care, among others.

5 Lesley-Ann Erasmus-Claassen (Cape Town) Senior Research Technologist Tel /0223 Cell Lesley-Ann Erasmus-Claassen is currently employed as a Senior Research Technologist in the Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drug Research Unit of the South African Medical Research Council. She completed a Bachelor s Degree in Psychology (B Psych) from the University of the Western Cape and is registered with the Health Professions Council South Africa (HPCSA) as a Registered Counsellor. She is primarily responsible for data collection, quality control and assurance, study coordination, the supervision and training of field staff, and project administration for the Project MIND study. Kholiswa Dube (Cape Town) Senior Officer Tel: Kholiswa.Dube@mrc.ac.za The Senior Officer provides support to ATODRU staff by assisting with various tasks which contributes to the smooth and efficient running of the Unit. Her responsibilities includes: organizing the SACENDU meetings; editing and distribution of the 6-monthly SACENDU Proceedings, maintaining databases, leave control and secretarial support. She is also providing support to specific projects by arranging meetings, travel arrangements, liaising with NGOs and district social service offices and is responsible for the procurement of goods, services and supplies for the projects. Nombuso Moshiga (Cape Town) Senior Research Technologist Nombuso.Moshiga@mrc.ac.za Nombuso Moshiga is a Senior Research Technologist in the Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drug Research Unit of the South African Medical Research Council. She obtained an Honours degree in Development Studies majoring in social policy and a BA degree majoring in Psychology and Sociology from the University of the Western Cape. Her future plans is to obtain a Master s degree in Monitoring and Evaluation as her main interest is development management, planning and policy. She is currently working as a Research Assistant for Project MIND, a study focusing on strengthening health systems by incorporating mental health care into chronic disease care. Her responsibilities include translating intervention material into isixhosa, assist with the training of field staff, liaising with suitable organizations for participant referrals and provide the necessary skills to conduct qualitative interviews. Warren Lucas (Cape Town) NRF Research Scientist Intern Warren.lucas@mrc.ac.za Warren Lucas is a Sports Scientist, pursuing a Ph.D. Public Health and Family Medicine at the University of Cape Town, reading for interventions within substance use treatment and the NRF Research Scientist Intern at the SA MRC, Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drugs Unit. He holds a MA in Sport, Recreation and Exercise Science and is an Associate Lecturer and Researcher in the field of Sports Science and Sport for Development at the University of the Western Cape and Exercise Teachers Academy (Cape Town). Warren has published and presented peer-reviewed research articles in Sports Science, Preventive Medicine and Public Health, with a focus in Epidemiology, Biostatistics, Exercise Science, and Surgery Infection. Warren is an FIG Level 3 qualified Gymnastics Coach and is the President of the Cape Town Gymnastics Association, He was nominated and selected as one of Africa s 100 Brightest Young Minds in 2017 and is also an Executive Committee Member at the Foundation for Sport, Development, and Peace, heading up the Youth at-risk Programme and conducting research in using physical activity and exercise as a vehicle to teach life and educational skills. Warren is passionate about overall health and wellness, youth development and community health with the aim of preventing illnesses and non-communicable diseases, decreasing the burden of both mental and physical diseases, and developing generic skills of confidence, collaboration, communication, creativity, critical thinking and aesthetic appreciation, through using sport, physical activity and exercise science, for improved quality of life.

6 Naledi Kitleli (Pretoria) Scientist Tel: Naledi Kitleli is a scientist in the Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drug Research Unit of the South African Medical Research Council. Prior to working at ATODRU she obtained her honours in Psychology at Rhodes University and completed her BA at Howard University in Washington D.C. Her primary role as a subinvestigator for the Alcohol/HIV bar study in drinking venues in bars and taverns in Pretoria are to coordinate CAB meeting, manage fieldworkers, facilitate with trainings and other administration activities regarding the project. On the urban project she is responsible for the counsellor subcomponent of the study. Her primary role on the Flagship project is to provide research support, qualitative analysis, quality control of questionnaires and managing health counsellors. Elmarie Nel (Pretoria) Chief Research Technologist (S1) Tel: Elmarie.nel@mrc.ac.za Ms Elmarie Nel is a Chief Research Technologist in the Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drug Research Unit of the South African Medical Research Council. She is responsible for the coordination and management of fieldwork for various projects which includes personnel, logistic and financial management of fieldwork operations. She studied at the University of Free State and worked for many years in the field of Community Health as the manager of all health clinics within the Mangaung Metropolitan Municipal Area. She was also councillor of the Bloemfontein Municipality and was involved in their HIV/AIDS programme. Currently she is involved in the Flagship project: Effectiveness of an alcohol-focused intervention in improving adherence to antiretroviral therapy (ART) and HIV treatment outcomes at four research sites in Tshwane, South Africa. Mrs Eileen Rich (Pretoria) Project Manager Tel: eileen.rich@mrc.ac.za Eileen Rich has a Masters degree in Research Psychology from the University of South Africa (UNISA). Currently she is employed as a Senior Scientist in the Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drug Research Unit of the South African Medical Research Council. Research she has been involved with includes an HIV Prevention Intervention study based in bars and shebeens in rural areas in North West Province and an international study exploring the extent of codeine misuse. Before joining the MRC she worked for the UNISA Centre for Applied Psychology (UCAP) and managed a variety of projects dealing with discrimination of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people (LGBT) in various sectors of society. She is also a trauma counsellor. Mukhethwa Londani (Pretoria) Data Manager Tel Fax: mukhethwa.londani@mrc.ac.za Mukhethwa Londani is currently employed as a Data Manager in the Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drug Research Unit of the South African Medical Research Council. He obtained a BSc degree in Statistics and Mathematics at the University of Venda in 2006, a Master s degree in Financial Mathematics and an Honours degree in Statistics from University of the Western Cape. He is a member of the young African Statisticians since He worked with different types of datasets and his analytical skills involves Analysing abilities, Programming and Reporting. His analysis interest includes linear regression and Relative Weights, Logistic regression, Discriminant analysis, Segmentation/Cluster analysis, Conjoint and correspondence analysis.

7 Rose Choeu (Pretoria) Senior Administrator Tel: Fax: Mathokwa Rose Choeu holds a Certificate in Practical Bookkeeping and Accounting and she is a member of the Institute of Certified Book Keepers and Accountants (ICBA). She also holds a Certificate of Fundamentals of Pastel Accounting and a Public Sector Financial Management Certificate (PFMA). She provides administrative support for two units ATODRU and HSRU, the research staff based in Pretoria. She is responsible for administration, organizing and coordinating functions, organizing local and international travel arrangements, procuring office equipment and supplies, monitoring project expenditure, maintaining of data base for research material and overall office management. Mr. Frans Masango (Pretoria) Research Technologist Tel: Fax: Frans.masango@mrc.ac.za Frans Masango is a Research Technologist in the Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drug Research Unit of the South African Medical Research Council. He is responsible for the coordination and management of fieldwork on two projects being conducted in bars and taverns in two rural areas and one semi-urban area of North West province. Previously, he worked on a bar-based study conducted in two urban areas of Tshwane. He has a HIV/AIDS care and counselling certificate and is also studying towards a BSC- Computer Science and Psychology degree at UNISA.
