1 FLAMINGO GARDENS ORCHID SOCIETY September 2013 Dr. Martin Motes to Speak By Shirley Decker Martin Motes a second generation orchidist, has been growing Vandas in South Florida for over 50 years. Dr. Motes has bred hundreds of new hybrids, receiving scores of American Orchid Society awards, including three FCCs and three Awards of Quality. His hybrids swept Gold, Silver and Bronze medals at the 18 th World Orchid conference in Dijon with V. Mary Motes garnering the trophy as Best Vanda in Show, Motes hybrids have been recognized by the Royal Horticultural Society and in other international judging venues. He is an accredited American Orchid Society Judge. He is the author of Vandas: Their History, Botany, and Culture; Florida Orchid Growing Month by Month; and Florida Vanda Growing Month by Month. He will be lecturing on none other than Vandas! I am sure you will all be very interested in what he has to say about their culture. I would like to say a great big THANK YOU to the wonderful group of people who have been serving on your board. They all work together to make your monthly meetings the best they can be, coming to the board meetings, setting up the meeting room early, brainstorming and volunteering for all our special projects. These include the Annual Orchid Auction, Flamingo Gardens Garden and Bonsai Show, Flamingo Gardens Orchid and Bromeliad Show and the Holiday Dinner Party. Now our new year begins with the Election of Officers and Membership Drive. The slate of officers will be voted on at this meeting. Remember your vote counts! It is also time to renew your membership. The membership drive runs from September through October. Your membership has many benefits with programs and activities throughout the year. I hope you see the value of your society. Remember, you don t want to miss out on any of the fun with FGOS! I am looking forward to hearing Dr. Motes at our meeting and I hope you are too. 2 Page 2 By Shirley Decker Shirley s Corner Hi Folks! Like most orchid pests, you don t know thrips are around until the damage is done, and then it s too late, at least for any buds or flowers. The good news about thrips is that they won t kill your orchids. The bad news is that they can make a real mess of your flowers. These pests appear in cycles throughout the year with no apparent rhyme or reason. Autumn often arrives with a thrips outbreak. Some years are thrippier than others. Just last month I took a huge aerides odoratum in Use Pesticides Safely: Be sure plant and site is on the label. Be sure pest is on the label. Follow label directions for mixing. Follow label directions about wearing protective clothing. Check label for other precautions. Protective Clothing and Equipment. Beat the bugs! to the Flamingo Gardens for AOS judging and to my dismay learned it was infected with thrips! Very embarrassing! Thrips can move quickly when disturbed and will hide under folds in the lip or where the petals meet the pedicel. There are several species, they all can cause damage. As far as I m concerned the only good thrips is a dead thrips. They are all pretty small and hard to see with the naked eye. By the way, thrips is always spelled plural even when there is only one thrips! The rasping action of their mouth parts strips the color right out of a flower. If they start feeding on the buds, the flowers will usually open deformed if at all. Like any pest that injures plant tissue thrips can be vectors for spreading disease. The first line of defense is to eliminate any potential thrips host plants in the vicinity of the orchid growing area. In the south this means gardenia, ficus benjamina, camellia and magnolia. Thrips can be controlled with simple household remedies. A teaspoon of Dawn liquid soap mixed with a quart of water in a hand sprayer will often subdue early outbreaks. Spray every 2 to 3 days until controlled. Orthene wettable powder is currently the most accepted control for thrips. Mix ¼ tsp. to a quart of water in a hand sprayer and spray buds and flowers every 7 days for three weeks. Always wear appropriate protective clothing when using agricultural chemicals (gloves, respirator, long pants and shirt). Always follow label directions. THE LABEL IS THE LAW. Do not spray when windy. Always strip off clothing and shower after using chemicals. Enjoy your orchid collection!
