Celebrating our Volunteers Time to Say Thank You Over the past year we would not have survived without the excellent work carried out by many of our local volunteers. During National Volunteers Week 1 7 June, I ask you to join us in thanking these volunteers for their commitment of time and the positive impact they make, working in our shops, in our office or leading our groups to support unpaid Carers across Trafford. They all deserve recognition, and this year we are extremely thankful in particular to all our hard working staff and volunteers who have rallied round to get the new shop in Stretford up and running. Volunteering has been shown to improve the wellbeing of the volunteers themselves, as well as helping others. It s human nature to feel good after helping someone out! Volunteering can also help you to gain valuable new skills and experiences, and boost your confidence. Over 14 million people regularly give up their time to volunteer in the UK and that deserves to be celebrated. Volunteering contributes 22.6bn to the economy each year so we think more people should recognise its value to society, especially here at Trafford Carers. There are all kinds of volunteering roles however much (or little) time and effort you have to spare there will be role just right for you!! I Started to work at the Sale Shop last year. I had made the decision to volunteer, but on passing happened to notice a sign outside the Sale shop advertising for staff. I was apprehensive at first about going out to work, but once I had made that leap I found the staff to be very friendly. This helped me to make the transition back into work so much easier. I have now transferred to the new shop in Stretford and found the staff to be just as friendly. I know I made the right decision to come back out to work and really enjoy volunteering at Trafford Carers. (Phil, Re:Love & Care, Stretford Volunteer) I enjoy working with other volunteers. I enjoy cleaning and putting out stock. I am learning to use the till and hope that this is something I can do in the future We enjoy sorting stock and repairing damaged items I like to work in the shop because everyone is so friendly and chatty. It s a brilliant charity to support. I like working here on the till because I like helping people, all the staff I work with are great and are always there when I need them. I like to volunteer for Trafford Carers because I am a Carer myself. The staff are so friendly and I enjoy helping people I m retired but love working in the shop and meeting new people 6 Tel: info@traffordcarerscentre.org.uk

TYCP NEWSLETTER 30th May This May we will be celebrating Young Carers across Trafford with our very own Young Carer Awareness Day on Wednesday 30th May. Young Carers face many challenges and our Awareness Day is about recognising these challenges and bringing Young Carers together to have timeout and enjoy a challenge of a different kind by taking part in our Sponsored Slide-a-thon on Europe s largest indoor slide, which is over 40 metres long at PlayFactore, Trafford Quays Leisure Village, M17 8DD We are aiming to complete 886 slides, a total of 22 miles, to celebrate 22 years of supporting carers across Trafford. The event will be raising funds for our Young Carer groups so we can continue to provide lots of fun and exciting activities throughout the year. Why not hold a competition between your friends to see who can slide the most times? If you would like to take part speak to Kirsty or Kerry who will provide you with a fundraising pack or youngcarers@traffordcarerscentre.org.uk Meet our new YC Officer What was the big surprise? What s coming up? Issue 1 April to June 2018

ROOM REVEAL! In our January Newsletter we teased you with our New Year Surprise! And what a surprise it was! For the first session of 2018, we had our room reveal for our Teenage Groups. Thanks to funding from Carers Trust we were able to revamp our office consultation rooms to make them more Young Person friendly! We took on board ideas and suggestions from Young Carers that come to our groups who said that the room we held our activities in felt too 'officey' and like a board meeting and made their words a reality. With a lot more storage and colour pops that fit in with our company logo the room looks much more inviting for young people. We have a seating area with two comfortable couches, a desk for young people to do their homework if they wish, and three rooms off from the main seating area. Room 1 is a games room, Room 2 is our Chill Out Zone, with mood lighting and comfortable chairs and Room 3 is our Arts and Crafts Room. The Chill Out Room in particular has been very popular being somewhere young people can sit down and relax quietly after a difficult day. Easter Holiday Fun Tuesday 4th April - Inflata Nation, Textilose Road, Trafford Park (4pm - 6pm) Wednesday 5th April - Arts & Crafts at the Carers Centre, 19b School Road (12pm - 3pm) OUTT news Whit Holiday Fun Wednesday 30th May - Young Carer Awareness Day Slide-athon, PlayFactore Thursday 31st May - Activity to be planned (12pm - 3pm). Please check Facebook for updates. Our activities are provided thanks to supporters of TYCP and without them we wouldn t have the funds to provide activities and trips. Although funds are low at the moment we hope that our slide-a-thon event will allow us to continue running activities/trips. If you have any suggestions for how we can raise funds please get in touch. If you are aged between 8-11 and would like to attend any of the activities please ask your parents/guardians to get in touch on or youngcarers@traffordcarerscentre.org.uk

TEENs news We d like to say a big thank you to all the Young Carers that took part in our survey to help towards the work we are doing with GMCA. Young Carers Projects across the ten boroughs of Manchester are working together to ensure all Young Carers are receiving the same support. The survey has helped inform us of the issues you face, how Young Carers in the different areas are affected and what you want from your Young Carer Service. Your support has helped us to identify that over half of young carers struggle to focus at school because they are worrying at home and that besides from seeing others at school, Young Carers only see the person they care for. Many Young Carers feel that without Young Carers Groups to go to, they wouldn t have any friends. With 1 in 5 Young Carers struggling with friendships and socialising due to their caring role. One of the barriers that Young Carers face to getting support is the misconception that they will get put into care if they tell someone about their caring role, and a massive 44% of Young Carers worry about being put into care. YR 7-9 Monthly groups will continue to run on the 2nd to last Wednesday of the month. We d love to hear your thoughts on activities that we can put on for you over the next few months, including the summer holidays YR Monthly groups will continue to run on the last Wednesday of the month. Please note the group on 30th May will not take place but we would love to see you take part in the Slide-a-thon instead! See Kirsty and Kerry for details. We are pleased to welcome our new Young Carer Officer, Kerry Liburd to TYCP. Kerry joined us in February after having gained experience working with young people in her previous roles. She has quickly settled in and has been working with Kirsty to plan activities for Easter and Whit holidays. Having just completed her Paediatric First Aid qualification Kerry will be helping out with all the group activities. Kerry will also be attending school drop-ins and offering support to young carers. WATCH THIS SPACE How do you like our new Young Carers Supplement? We want to hand some space over to young carers so that you can show us what else you have been getting up to outside the groups and activities. Do you have a joke, story or poem you want to share? Do you want to draw us a picture or even just send us a picture. We d love to hear from you. Submit your material to Kirsty or Kerry at youngcarers@traffordcarerscentre.org.uk

BATHROOM MAKEOVER TYCP recently underwent a bathroom makeover thanks to the wonderful generosity of the team at Bathroom Takeaway. After moving into our current building the toilet facilities were not the most attractive or hygienic and when we were offered the opportunity to have the bathroom facilities made over we jumped at the chance. Little did we know just how much of a makeover it was going to be and it completely exceeded our expectations. Tony Bogg, Operations Manager at Bathroom Takeaway said: The Centre volunteers and employees do an absolutely fantastic job at helping these young people and we were delighted to offer our support. It took us just over 3 weeks to complete the project from start to finish but it really was something that we re all proud to have been involved in. The bathroom was covered in mould so after we had professionally cleaned it, we arranged for a partition wall to be built in so that there could be a distinct male and female toilet area as well as disabled access too. We also pulled in the help of local painters and lay new flooring down as well as the new toilets and basins. Centre Manager, Michelle Grogan said: We are so incredibly grateful to Bathroom Takeaway for all their help and can t thank them enough for making such a difference to our Centre. The young people that come to the Centre are looking for a place to relax and have some respite from their daily role looking after a loved one. Having this gorgeous bathroom makeover is something that we wouldn t have had the budget for so is amazing to have been given this completely free of charge. A big thank you to all at Bathroom Takeaway and also to Key 103 s Cash for Kids for helping to make the project happen. If you are a Young Carer or you know a young carer who would like to access our Project please call Kirsty or Kerry on or youngcarers@traffordcarerscentre.org.uk
