EVENT SPOTLIGHT Prototypes Ribbo-Cuttig ad Natioal Recovery Moth Celebratio PROTOTYPES NEWLY RENOVATED POMONA WOMEN S CENTER was the scee of celebratio as supporters, Board members, staff ad cliets joied with elected officials to celebrate the revamped facility. The Pomoa Wome s Ceter reovatios provides Prototypes staff with a fully equipped facility to match the high-quality services they deliver each day to wome ad their childre. Because of Prototypes, thousads of wome with drug addictios have access to services whe they would t have the opportuity elsewhere. SENATOR NORMA J. TORRES The celebratio was made eve more special because it took place durig Natioal Recovery Moth. Now i its 25th year, Natioal Recovery Moth serves a critical role i remidig the public that addictio is a disease ad, as such, should be afforded the same research, fudig ad treatmet as ay other chroic disease. Natioal Recovery Moth also serves to remid the public of the growig eed for programs like Prototypes. Last year aloe, early 23 millio Americas eeded treatmet for drug or alcohol use. Less tha 11 percet of that total actually received the treatmet they eeded to recover. As a mom, I could ever imagie havig to choose betwee my health ad my so, ad o oe should have to, said Prototypes Presidet ad CEO Cassadra Loch. Prototypes keeps families together ad provides everythig we ca for both moms ad their childre, she said, makig sure the ext geeratio does ot suffer from addictio, icarceratio ad poverty. cotiued from page 6 HCSF is a game-chager for wome who face uimagiable challeges. Recetly, a youg wome ad her two-year-old toddler came to Prototypes seekig treatmet. They had bee homeless ad arrived with virtually othig. Prototypes staff immediately foud space. Desperate ad worried about the well-beig of her childre, she had left her eight-moth old baby i the care of others while she sought help. Ufortuately, the caretakers for her baby proved ureliable. Durig her secod week at Prototypes, with o warig, ie armed police officers arrived to arrest her for child abadomet. We were able to have the police sit dow with the cliet ad explai the situatio, said Ms. Poirier. Although police still arrested her, Prototypes staff assured her that they would assist her through the process. The evet also hoored idividuals who have supported Prototypes missio to esure that the most vulerable i our commuity receive life-savig treatmet. Ms. Loch ad April Wilso, BA, RAS, Vice Presidet of Mother ad Child Residetial Treatmet, preseted the Prototypes Champio Award to two elected officials for their advocacy ad support: U.S. Cogresswoma Gloria Negrete McLeod ad Califoria State Seator Norma Torres. The Champio Award was also preseted to the Black Wome Lawyers Associatio of Los Ageles for their may years of support. Califoria State Seator Carol Liu, who received Prototypes Champio Award i 2013, was also preset to celebrate the reovatios. Seator Liu played a itegral role i helpig to keep our Commuity Prisoer Mother Program ope ad highlighted why programs like those at Prototypes are critical for our commuities. The way we deal with icarcerated wome does ot just affect wome. It also has a profoud impact o their childre, Seator Liu stated. It s time we treat addictio as a health issue, ot as a crime. Whe a mother is arrested, there is a immediate egative impact o the child, said Ms. Child. HCSF has the capabilities to fid ways to trasform how law eforcemet ad the courts deal with these situatios. The HCSF Collaborative Coucil met ad discussed the situatio. A represetative from the District Attorey s office was able to help Prototypes advocate for the cliet. To avoid future situatios, such as armed police arrivig to arrest a cliet, Prototypes is curretly workig with the police departmet to trai them o better approaches to workig with this populatio. The HCSF program was made for wome like this cliet, Ms. Poirier said. Wome who, because of homelessess, trauma ad addictio, have ever had the comprehesive support to tur their lives aroud. Above, the ew computer lab provides computer skills traiig to help cliets prepare for employmet. Parter ad Attorey at Law, Lerma Poiter & Spitz LLP Cidy Teti Seior Maager, Capital Group Cassadra Loch Presidet ad Chief Executive Officer, Prototypes ABOUT US Prototypes is a lifelie to wome who are strugglig with addictio ad other serious issues such as domestic violece ad metal illess. May of these wome are mothers who face a impossible choice: give up their childre to foster care or a guardia, or cotiue to suffer. Prototypes is a game chager by allowig wome to keep their childre with them durig treatmet so they both get the help they eed. Ad, by combiig comprehesive treatmet with practical life-skills traiig, we prepare wome for log-term success. Prototypes provides comprehesive, itegrated, ad evidece-based services to 10,000 idividuals each year at 14 locatios throughout Souther Califoria. Prototypes is a iteratioally recogized, CARF Accredited o-profit orgaizatio dedicated to improvig commuities impacted by substace use, metal illess ad domestic violece. prototypes.org Prototypes staff ad supporters cut the ribbo to commemorate the reovatios at the Pomoa Wome s Ceter. From left: Jay Virbel, Califoria Departmet of Correctios ad Rehabilitatio Associate Director of Female Offeder Programs; Christy Beaudi, LCSW, CPHQ, Prototypes VP of Quality & Safety; April Wilso, Prototypes VP of Mother ad Child Residetial; Califoria State Seator Carol Liu; A McClaatha, Protoypes Board Chair; Cassadra Loch, Prototypes Presidet & CEO; Nial Stimso, Prototypes VP of Busiess Developmet; Califoria Seator Norma J. Torres; Levi Marti, Prototypes VP of Fiace & Admiistrative Operatios; ad Agie Castro, Assistat Field Director for Supervisor Gloria Molia. The upgrades ivolved early every room, helpig to improve the Ceter after early 30 years of providig treatmet services while maitaiig its warm, home-like feel. The ew family dormitories provide a warm ad comfortable space for moms ad their kids. cotiued o page 7 2 Newsletter desig by 2B Commuicatios 7
8 At Prototypes, we re workig to chage the way i which commuities approach treatmet. We believe that substace use ad metal health disorders should be viewed ad treated the same as ay other medical coditio, with the same care ad cocer that our society ad health care systems give to physical ailmets. PROTOTYPES IS A GAME-CHANGER. Not oly do we provide treatmet to the perso who is strugglig, we ivolve her etire support system childre, parters, frieds ad other family members so they uderstad her challeges ad eeds as well as their ow. Ivolvig the etire family or support system helps wome succeed i their recovery log after they leave Prototypes. Ad it eables us to help reduce stigma, icrease compassio ad make a positive impact for families today ad for geeratios to come. Durig the holiday seaso, everyoe should be able to celebrate ad sped time with their loved oes. But we kow that this is ot always the case, because may cotiue to suffer i silece ad shame. Thakfully, with the help of our supporters who have atteded a evet, give of their time, or who have made a doatio to Prototypes this past year, more families are livig healthy lives. Together, we will cotiue workig to create more compassioate commuities ad help idividual families to create ew holiday traditios that will last may lifetimes. From my family to yours, Happy Holidays! MESSAGE from Prototypes Presidet ad CEO FOR MOST WOMEN, overcomig a addictio while sufferig from metal illess or a history of trauma is the challege of a lifetime. Fidig treatmet that takes ito accout all of a idividual s eeds, alog with those of her family ca sometimes be impossible. Cassadra Loch, MBA, LCSW, Presidet ad CEO Patricia ad her daughter are proof that we are savig lives. Right ow there are wome who desperately wat ad eed treatmet, but caot afford it. Patricia remais steadfast i her recovery. She has a ew home, a successful career ad a thrivig child. Your life-savig doatio will help provide access to the services they urgetly eed. We appreciate your geerosity. Doate olie at prototypes.org. Thak you! Ispirig Hope, Health ad Idepedece
