Satisfying AB2246 Suicide Prevention Mandate with Turnkey PD Solution December 2016 Mike Lombardo Director of Inter-agency Liaison Placer County office of Education Jennifer Spiegler SVP, Strategic Partnerships Kognito
Satisfying AB2246 Suicide Prevention Mandate with Turnkey PD Solution December 2016 Agenda New Legislation: What is AB2246? Simulation Demonstration Simulations Available for PK-12 Schools Q&A
What is AB2246? Signed by Governor Brown on September 26 th Requires LEAs before the beginning of the school year to adopt a policy on pupil suicide prevention on grades 7-12 and shall address procedures relating to suicide prevention, intervention and postvention. Policies need to address high risk groups Policies adopted shall also address any training to be provided to teachers of pupils in grades 7 to 12, inclusive, on suicide awareness and prevention
Who is Kognito? A health simulation company that believes in the power of conversation to inspire and inform, impact how people think and act, evoke empathy, and change lives. Pioneers in developing research-proven, role-play simulations that prepare individuals to lead real-life conversations.
Satisfying AB2246 Suicide Prevention andate with Turnkey PD Solution December 2016 What makes Kognito unique? Virtual role play with emotionally responsive virtual students and real-time performance feedback engaging, relevant, realistic Proven to build sustained skills and self-confidence and to change behavior Easy to deploy: built in tracking, surveys, certificates, completion reminders, outreach materials and discussion guides Integrated local resources Implementation planning and rollout support
What does Kognito offer to PK-12 audiences? Professional Development At-Risk for PK-12 Staff Mental Health/Suicide Prevention Step In, Speak Up! LGBTQ Anti-bullying Transitions: Supporting Military Children High School Student Curriculum Friend2Friend Mental Health/Suicide Prevention
Satisfying AB2246 Suicide Prevention Mandate with Turnkey PD Solution December 2016 Where does Kognito fit? Primary/Universal Mental Health Early Intervention Suicide Prevention Social Emotional Learning (SEL) PBIS Multi-Tiered Systems of Support Climate Enhancement Bullying Prevention Attendance & Achievement Vulnerable Populations
How does Kognito help satisfy AB2246? Tailored to grade level taught (grades 7-12 required) Operates within the constraints of the law by focusing on identifying students in distress and connecting with support. Commonly used in other states with similar legislation, including Texas, Nebraska, Arkansas, Pennsylvania PLUS NREPP-Listed Follows best-practice staff training recommendations of Scott Poland, co-author of Suicide in Schools.
Demonstration
User Comments Post-training survey I enjoyed being able to practice speaking to the three students and the ability to undo and start the conversation over. The ability to practice is so important. The scenarios were very realistic and the subject covered new ground for me and also confirmed my current knowledge. I also thought the handout was great to have. I printed it out and will keep it nearby. The students selected were chosen well. They closely match students I have to deal with on a routine basis. I thought the course was effective and encourages me to think about how to better navigate conversations with students who are having psychological distress. The links seem like a good way to bridge the course with actually applying it and having access to resources.
User Comments 3-month follow-up survey Share this with everyone who has anything to do with children. As a school counselor, it is a regular occurrence for me to talk to students about their psychological distress. However, I feel this training helped the teachers understand how to approach students they had concerns about and then refer them to me for further help. I have had more confidence in having discussions with students about their stress. I have approached other teachers at our school about students I have been concerned about. We have come together as a group to support more students.
