2 ANNUAL REPORT 2015 In this Annual Report, we are delighted to share a glimpse into a day in the life of Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Arlington. Every minute of every day, something extraordinary is happening for those we are serving. Our work is Christ-centered and client-focused, as we endeavor to transform lives by fulfilling immediate and long-term needs for our clients. However, the amount of people who call for help is growing daily. Their voices are urgent, desperate. Perhaps we are their last best chance. Just as they rely on us, we rely on you. Your gifts of time and treasure bring hope and healing to those in desperate need. Adoption and Pregnancy Support 264 birthparents counseled to choose life 6:15 am I was able to help them complete their family. Maybe they couldn t have done that if it weren t for me. I didn t want him to have a harder life than he deserved. Rachel and Tom are awake to feed son Jay who they adopted through Catholic Charities. Unable to have children biologically, they were grateful to bring Jay into their forever family and to work with a Catholic agency that cared for the interests of the birth mother, the adoptive family, and most importantly, the child. 2

4 ANNUAL REPORT 2015 St. Lucy Food Project More than 734,000 lbs. of food was given to the poor 11:07 am There s something different about this place and the way they treat you here. They always remember my name and ask about my kids. Robert (client names changed to retain anonymity) is at the St. Lucy pantry at Christ House in Alexandria to pick up food for his wife and four children. Today, he is bringing home six overflowing bags of milk and eggs, fresh fruits and vegetables and a cake for his daughter s birthday. Coming to a food pantry can be uncomfortable, but is necessary for many like Robert he was recently laid off. The warm atmosphere, thoughtful details and dignified options of food at our St. Lucy Project pantries is a gift to ease emotions and alleviate burdens. 4

6 ANNUAL REPORT 2015 St. Martin de Porres Senior Services 151 seniors attended St. Martin de Porres Senior Center to stay mentally, physically and socially active Highlights from 2015 Secured a third delivery vehicle for the St. Lucy Food Project and acquired additional refrigerators, freezers and shelving to support our Healthy Eating Initiative at all of our food pantries Opened a counseling office within our St. Lucy Project pantry in Leesburg in order to serve the whole person Helped 58 parishes feed families in the community Established a senior services site at St. John the Beloved in McLean to provide eldercare and counseling Expanded mental health counseling to 10 parishes in our diocese Hired two social workers to support family reunification efforts with unaccompanied minors Launched Mark X to provide teens and their families with mental health counseling Created a learning lab with donated computers at St. Margaret of Cortona Transformational Housing to help children meet and exceed their educational needs 6

7 CATHOLIC CHARITIES Diocese of Arlington Christ House Men s Transformational Housing 32 men found a home at Christ House 4:45 pm I know it s cliché, but Christ House has been such a blessing for me. God s timing really is perfect. Terry is coming home from work to get a quick dinner before going to his night classes. He was previously homeless and slept on the steps of a church. Now that he s living at Christ House, he is focusing on his career and his schooling so he can move into a place of his own and provide for his boys the way his father provided for him. 7

8 ANNUAL REPORT 2015 Goals for 2016 Enhance parish services including two counseling offices at Loudoun county parishes and more parish locations with eldercare counseling and senior services Add a social worker at our immigration offices to address counseling needs such as domestic abuse, addiction and family separation Increase number of pro-bono attorneys to assist more clients with legal needs Collect, store, and deliver 1 million lbs. of food to our pantry network of 55 parishes and 25 partner pantries Develop plans for a centralized, diocesan-wide in-take and call center Increase probability of families staying in independent housing by strengthening client education, counseling, training and mentorship within our housing programs Vision 2020: Catholic Charities Strategic Plan In 2015, we developed and launched our 5-year organizational plan centered on a parish-based service model. Long-term considerations predicated on diocesan needs and sufficient resources include addressing issues of human trafficking, expanding transformational housing to the western region of the diocese and meeting the needs of young, unwed mothers. Our rallying cry is Encountering Christ and Transforming Lives because we know that encountering Christ will lead to transformative encounters with the marginalized. 9 CATHOLIC CHARITIES Diocese of Arlington St. Margaret of Cortona Family Transformational Housing 63 men, women and children found a home at St. Margaret 7:18 pm I was in a bad marriage. He called me names and pushed me broke my laptop and my cell phone, ripped my dress, would take the car so I missed work. I lost my job because of that. Now that I m here, everything is moving forward. It is finally feeling like we have a new life. Catholic Charities does wonderful things for people. I can t say enough. Megan and her daughter are participating in the required Wednesday night activity, along with all of the families living at St. Margaret of Cortona. The children take part in arts and crafts, reading, games and physical activities. The parents attend group counseling and classes on topics such as budgeting or parenting, so they can develop skills that will prepare them and enhance their family life as they move to independent housing. 9

11 CATHOLIC CHARITIES Diocese of Arlington Hogar Educational Services 3,003 clients were served at Hogar, receiving legal assistance, English instruction and support in their citizenship journey 9:08 pm In my country I was an accountant and I want to work here as an accountant, but my English is not very good. My goals are to learn English very well and learn accounting. Then I can get a better job and make more money. Thuy is participating in the intermediate-level English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) at our Hogar classroom site in Manassas. The English lessons frequently incorporate other subjects important to newcomers, such as banking, cooking or shopping in the United States. Like many of our clients, Thuy comes to class after work. Therefore we offer classes during mornings, evenings and weekends at eight different locations throughout the diocese. 11
