2 About LUPUS FOUNDATION OF AMERICA The Lupus Foundation of America (LFA) is the only national force devoted to solving the mystery of lupus, one of the world s cruelest, most unpredictable, and devastating diseases, while giving caring support to those who suffer from its brutal impact. Through a comprehensive program of research, education, and advocacy, the LFA leads the fight to improve the quality of life for all people affected by lupus. About THE MID-SOUTH CHAPTER Research, education, and patient services are at the heart of Lupus Foundation of America, Mid-South Chapter s (LFAM) programs. With nearly 1,000 members and support groups in 3 states, the LFAM energetically pursues its mission to educate and support those affected by lupus and find the cure through the following five program objectives: o Provide direct financial support to researchers through LFA's Five-Year Research Support Program, "Bringing Down the Barriers. o Advocate for increased public & private sector support for biomedical research on lupus. o Translate research findings into medically-sound information and programs for physicians and other health care professionals. o Heighten public awareness of the causes and consequences of lupus. o Support individuals with lupus, their families and caregivers. The Walk to End Lupus Now is our Chapter s largest fundraiser in the area, allowing us to execute these objectives across the Mid-South. About LUPUS: THE DISEASE Lupus is a chronic, potentially life-threatening autoimmune disease that can cause damage to virtually any organ and tissue system in the body, including the blood, joints, skin, heart, lungs and kidneys. Throughout the United States, there are nearly two million people living with lupus. More than half of the people with lupus suffer four or more years and visit three or more doctors before receiving a correct diagnosis. Late diagnosis and delayed treatment contributes to significant tissue damage causing possible organ failure, disability, and death. Based on a nationwide poll in April 2005, two out of three Americans know very little or are completely uneducated about lupus. Although lupus can occur at any age, any race and in either sex, 90% of people with lupus are women in the prime of their lives. Lupus is more prevalent in African Americans, Hispanics, Native Americans and Asians.

3 More than just a fundraising event, Walk to End Lupus Now TM is a celebration for the entire community and brings hope for a better future for all those living with lupus. Walk to End Lupus Now provides an opportunity for lupus patients in the state to share how lupus has changed their lives, raise awareness of the effects of lupus, the signs, and the symptoms, and educate our community on the impact of lupus on families, our economy, and our state. This event not only provides a better understanding of what lupus is, it also brings us one step closer to finding the cure. Sponsorship Team Formation Form a team from your business to participate in the Walk to End Lupus Now. Recruit an employee to be the Team Captain, and the LFAM will work with that person to develop a team of employees. Develop internal incentives for fundraising reward the employee(s) who raise the most. On Walk-day, wear Business T-shirts so that everyone knows you re walking to support lupus. Sponsors of Walk to End Lupus Now receive great recognition and appreciation for their partnership and commitment to provide support and health education to lupus patients and helping find the cure to lupus. Sponsorship benefits can be tailored to fit your company s needs. With your help, we are able to fund support services, programs, and much needed lupus research! Sell Point-of-Purchase (POP) Butterflies Ask your customers if they would support the Lupus Foundation of America, Mid- South Chapter by purchasing a butterfly for a minimum $1.00 donation.
