2 Greetings to you! We re delighted honoured to share the Compassion Project s Winter 2015 programming with you. As the Compassion Project enters its fifth year, we continue to be inspired by all who are willing to be engaged in fostering conditions for compassion to flourish emerge naturally within health human services beyond. Nearly 800 people participated in the Fall 2014 programming. Our offerings are made possible because of your willingness to say yes to embarking on this journey of professional personal growth development. Your presence in the Compassion Project offerings contributes to uniting our community in a spirit of continuous learning, improvement, love. We are so grateful to our growing faculty of instructors the many volunteers without which these offerings would not be made possible. The Winter 2015 curriculum provides a buffet table from which you can design your own journey. New this winter is the 5-day Mindful Self Compassion Retreat where we will welcome Michelle Becker, M.A. LMFT, from the Center for Mindful Self-Compassion to our community in March. Participation in this retreat fulfils one of the prerequisites for becoming a teacher of MSC. We ve included new research findings recently presented at the International Symposium for Contemplative Studies in Boston, Massachusetts. Check out the interesting resiliency wellness outcome measures! We look forward to seeing you soon! 3 Tuition To ensure our programs are accessible by many, we have adopted a sliding fee scale for our programming with a suggested minimum of $50.00 for most of our programs (unless otherwise specified). We invite you to consider paying at a level you can afford recognizing that fees in the community can be upwards of $ or more for many courses. 4 Finding Clarity & Balance in the Midst of Chaos: Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) The MBSR program teaches us how to be aware of influences that affect our wellbeing how to find peace-of-mind balance in an often chaotic world. This course provides an opportunity to develop a fundamental capacity of mind that is relevant to both professional competence personal health. 6 Michelle Becker Mindful Self Compassion Mindful Self Compassion (MSC), is an empirically-supported, 8-week, program designed to cultivate the skill of self-compassion. Based on pioneering research by Kristin Neff integrated with the clinical perspective of Chris Germer, MSC teaches core principles practices that enable participants to respond to difficult emotions with kindness understing. It is warm-hearted, connected presence during difficult moments in our lives. Self-compassion provides emotional strength resilience that allows us to admit our shortcomings, motivate ourselves with encouragement, forgive ourselves when needed, care for others, be more fully ourselves. Rapidly exping research shows that self-compassion is strongly associated with emotional well-being, lower levels of anxiety depression, healthy habits such as diet exercise, more satisfying personal relationships. Fortunately, self-compassion is a skill that can be cultivated by anyone. You will learn how to: Practice mindfulness self-compassion in daily life Underst the science of self-compassion Hle difficult emotions with greater ease Motivate yourself with kindness rather than criticism Transform challenging relationships, old new Manage compassion fatigue Practice the art of savoring self-appreciation Teach simple self-compassion practices to others This program is an intensive training program rather than a retreat. It is a condensed version of the eightsession, empirically-supported Mindful Self-Compassion training developed by Christopher Germer Kristin Neff. MSC is an experiential journey an adventure in self-discovery self-kindness supported by the retreat setting at St. Benedict's. This program fulfills a prerequisite for becoming a MSC teacher. The work is rewarding, fulfilling, life giving yet many of us are left depleted, exhausted, unable to sustain our ability to be of service to others. This half-day workshop will explore how we can all C.A.R.E. through Compassion, Attention, Resilience Excellence. CCT aims to make people become more aware more connected with their compassionate nature so that their instinctive response to a given situation will come from that compassionate understing stpoint rather than negative excessive judgment. Through instruction, daily meditation, awareness, in-class interaction, the qualities of compassion, empathy, kindness are strengthened. Learn how to train your mind to intentionally choose compassionate thoughts actions develop skills that help you relate to others yourself. 8 Creating a Space to PAUSE Our lunchtime meditation Creating a space to PAUSE is a great mid-day break from the hectic pace of work. Everyone is welcome to this free drop-in session. Registration not required. Mondays, January 5 - March 30, hrs Parlour, St-Boniface Hospital Education Building, 431 Taché Continuing the Journey: Supporting the Practice of MBSR, MSC, CCT Graduates This gathering is offered to graduates of any mindfulness program. It is intended to provide an opportunity to gather with other past participants, meditate together discuss issues related to practice with experienced teachers. The evening will include a meditation practice, reflection, a short inspirational talk offered by a teacher. There will also be dedicated time to support each other s practice with inspirational poetry, tips, notices of upcoming events other resources that encourage our mindfulness meditation journey. All graduates are welcome to this free drop-in session. Registration not required. 9 Co-creating the Heart of Health Human Service: Courageous Conversations on Compassion Renew your deeper sense of purpose by participating in this highly experiential workshop. This Film is About Compassion is a documentary that invites us to witness the joys struggles of living working compassionately in health human service settings. Designed to catalyze conversation, each of the four chapters of the 126-minute film encourages authentic dialogue inspires viewers to engage in working towards organizational systemic change. Film Ambassador Training A 2-day Film Ambassador Training is designed for those wanting to begin courageous conversations about compassion within their communities. Prerequisite: Participants will have attended a previous film screening or be willing to view film prior to the Ambassador Training (Film Resource Toolkit distributed upon receipt of registration payment). Previous participation in a Compassion Project education course (MBSR, MSC, CCT) strongly encouraged.
