It exemplifies strong ethics and it is central to the Bon Secours Mission, to give Good Help to Those in Need. Campaign Update Our Capital Campaign supports four key areas of patient care: Emergency, Oncology, Cardiac and Women s & Children s Services. The campaign is tremendously successful, thanks to you and others in our community of support. We have much to celebrate state-of-the-art, personalized, compassionate healthcare within easy reach of everyone in our region. Dr. Bhardwaj will receive the Sister Joseph Rita Award for Medical Excellence and the Family of Nicholas Marangi will be awarded the Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center Medal of Honor. 2 The Bobbi Lewis Cancer Program s Sushil Bhardwaj, M.D. receives Sister Joseph Rita Award for Medical Excellence Sushil Bhardwaj's vision for The Bobbi Lewis Cancer Program has evolved during his 22 years of caring for patients at Good Samaritan. It is a vision that encompasses expanding and upgrading our oncology services. And it is rooted in 40 years of practicing medicine. Dr. Bhardwaj has seen oncology develop from a nascent science to one where advances based on a better understanding of the molecular biology of cancer present exciting opportunities. The Good Samaritan community looks forward to honoring Dr. Bhardwaj, recipient of the Sister Joseph Rita Award for Medical Excellence, at the Spring Ball on Friday, March 21. As Dr. Bhardwaj speaks about being part of a national trend that provides personalized, state-of-the-art and compassionate care at the community level, his patients speak with gratitude for the care he provides. "Dr. Bhardwaj told me how he can treat my cancer and keep me going for a long time," says John Grasso of Suffern, a patient at The Bobbi Lewis Cancer Program. "We discussed how the same chemotherapies offered by leading cancer centers are available at Good Samaritan." Mr. Grasso's wife Sabina also sees Dr. Bhardwaj. She is approaching her fifth year of remission. Mrs. Grasso had been treated at a leading cancer program in Manhattan but she came to The Bobbi Lewis Cancer Program for subsequent care. "When I see how John's care is handled, I realize how much more personalized it is than what I received in New York City," she says. The cancer program is named for Bobbi Lewis whose commitment to improving the quality of life in our region was profound. She was on the Board of Trustees at Good Samaritan as well as the Good Samaritan Foundation Executive Committee. Bobbi was also active in numerous other local organizations. Bobbi's husband Barry decided to create a program in her name while she was receiving treatment for breast cancer from Dr. Bhardwaj. "I wanted to recognize her work," says Mr. Lewis.

3 Continued Dr. Bhardwaj, who heads the program, studied medicine at the prestigious All India Institute of Medical Sciences in New Delhi. His training continued at the Jewish Hospital and Medical Center of Brooklyn where he was a resident and later, chief resident. Mount Sinai Hospital, NY, was Dr. Bhardwaj's first choice for his clinical fellowship because he wanted to work alongside Dr. Jim Holland, a luminary in the field. In addition to gaining extensive clinical knowledge, the years with Dr. Holland molded Dr. Bhardwaj's approach to providing care. His credo became even stronger to take time with patients, to help them fully understand their disease and their treatment plan and to give care in the same manner he would want to receive care. His patients attest to that. "Doctors and nurses in the oncology field should come here to The Bobbi Lewis Cancer Program to learn how patients should be treated," says Mr. Grasso. Mike Telesco of Stony Point, also a patient at The Bobbi Lewis Cancer Program, had considered going into New York City for care but decided otherwise. "After my first appointment [with him], I knew that Dr. Bhardwaj was the man I could trust with my life," says Mr. Telesco. "Dr. Bhardwaj conveys knowledge and sincerity that cannot be described. He answered all my questions there were probably 100,000 of them patiently and thoroughly. I didn't even think about going anywhere else." Dr. Bhardwaj has held academic appointments at Mount Sinai School of Medicine and New York Medical College in Valhalla. He was a member of the Visiting Faculty Program in Oncology at Albert Einstein College of Medicine and Montefiore Medical Center. He has also participated in a range of research, including National Institutes of Health/National Cancer Institute sponsored clinical trials. In addition to caring for patients and mentoring staff at Good Samaritan, Dr. Bhardwaj has treated patients at Nyack Hospital and Mount Sinai Hospital. He has volunteered in several leadership roles for the Rockland County Chapter of the American Cancer Society. Dr. Bhardwaj has also been a scientific reviewer for numerous peer-reviewed journals and has published more than 20 original peer-reviewed reports. He has written two-dozen research abstracts and has authored chapters in textbooks. As well, Dr. Bhardwaj has lectured and presented at educational symposia and Grand Rounds in the New York metro-area, across the country and internationally. 4 Marangi family receives Good Samaritan's Medal of Honor In memory of their father Nicholas, the Marangi family will receive the Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center Medal of Honor at the Spring Ball on Friday, March 21. Nicholas Marangi, a strong supporter of Good Samaritan, left a legacy that his children continue. In his 59 years, he worked hard, played hard, loved his family deeply and gave back to his community wholeheartedly. For as far back as his children can remember, their father worked to make the community better, particularly when it came to healthcare. Good Samaritan has been part of the Marangi history for three generations. In the 1930s, when construction on Good Samaritan's location on Lafayette Avenue first began, Nicholas' father founded the waste removal company that serviced the hospital. Although the business has evolved, changed names, expanded and merged with other companies, they have consistently been friends to our medical center. Once Nicholas took the reins at the family business, his interest in community service became even stronger and more impactful than before. Much of his focus was on Good Samaritan. "Our dad often said that health is our most important commodity," said Nicholas' oldest son Brian. The family backs up that sentiment with decades of raising funds to support healthcare at the local level. Nicholas passed away three years ago after battling cancer. As a family that experienced a loved one's struggle with cancer, Brian and Jeff understand the critical need to upgrade and expand The Bobbi Lewis Cancer Program at Good Samaritan. "It's tough enough to go through the stress, uncertainty and pain of cancer. You shouldn't have the added difficulty of needing to travel to the city for care," said Jeff, Nicholas' younger son. "We need continuous funding to support our already stellar doctors and to attract new talent." The brothers stayed in the family business after Brian earned a degree from Villanova and Jeff graduated from Gettysburg College. Lessons learned from their father are applied every day at work, at home and in the community. "We learned everything from our father's business Marangi Bros. 5 Continued Environmental to continue to service Good Samaritan in the most professional, environmentally-friendly way possible," says Brian. Action Carting provides non-hazardous waste management services in New York City as well as Northern New Jersey and Rockland and Orange County, through the acquisition of Interstate Waste Services. Action Carting serves a range of industrial and commercial customers, including medical facilities, restaurants, building contractors, investment banks and other businesses. Jeff, Brian and their colleagues maintain a keen eye for innovation in customer service and environmental responsibility. They take great pride in their ability to offer reasonable solutions to exceptional situations and that has resulted in long-term relationships with very happy customers. That attribute extends to their philanthropic activities. The Marangi brothers agree that when people with resources work to help others, really great things can happen. Pamela, Jeff and Brian's sister, is married to Christopher Guzman. They have two young sons and live in Hillsdale, New Jersey. Julianne, the youngest in the family, lives in Miami and works for the Morgan Hotel Group. She's also an accomplished artist widely recognized for her unique paintings and her hand-dyed, one-of-a-kind fabrics and wearable art. Anne, Nicholas' wife and their mother, is vibrant and fun loving. While raising their children, Anne also worked as a realtor. She continues to sell properties in Bergen County. Anne and Nicholas were blessed to have a healthy, happy marriage. They supported each other's business and philanthropic interests and, together, they stood strong throughout all of life's successes and struggles.

6 Pat Becraft takes it as it comes and gets on with life Pat Becraft keeps busy just about all the time. Her mantra "take it as it comes and deal with it" covers all aspect of her life; from helping her daughters raise their children to managing life with kidney cancer. In 2004, Pat learned that she had renal cell carcinoma. She came to The Bobbi Lewis Cancer Program at Good Samaritan for care because we are close to her home in Sloatsburg. "Receiving local care makes it easier for me to go about my daily routine and stay active," she says. Pat has had multiple surgeries, radiation therapy and chemotherapy. She's currently on her third course of chemo. "It can take a while to get the dose right, and that can be tough, but I am OK with it because I'm doing well," she says. Pat and her oncologist Dr. Bhardwaj were no strangers. He had cared for her mother-in-law and her mother. "In one way or another, I've been seeing Dr. Bhardwaj for about 20 years. He is a brilliant oncologist who keeps current with new treatments," Pat remarks. She is grateful that Dr. Bhardwaj explains her disease and her options thoroughly. He gives her complete information so she can make smart decisions. "The office staff are fantastic, too, and that makes a big difference," Pat says. "Before I first went there, I thought it would be a heartbreaking place. Instead, it is a place of caring, hope and action. It's an environment that empowers people to deal with their cancer. Each time I leave the office, I have a plan of action for how I'm going to stay healthy and beat this." A little bit about Pat Age 62, Pat retired after working for the phone company for 33 years. She held various positions there, most recently as a manager in the Call Center. Helping to raise her three grandchildren is one of her greatest pleasures in life. Pat and her husband Jim live in the same house with their three daughters and grandchildren aged four, 10 and 17.

7 Continued Pat has been the Girl Scout leader for granddaughter Isabella's troop for six years. Her involvement with scouting, however, goes back much longer. In the 90s, she led the Scout's Winter World survival skills program where the girls learned self-sufficiency while camping in the bitter cold of winter. She maintains that it's important for young girls to challenge themselves so they can grow into strong women. Pat and Jim will celebrate their 40 th wedding anniversary in April. She's looking at possible vacations in the Caribbean or in Florida to mark the occasion. But she'd also be happy to stay in town and celebrate by simply being together. "I still feel young, and I cannot believe our 40 th anniversary is coming up." She laughs, But then, I look at our old pictures and I see the passage of time!"
