4 The challenge The 2017 Health Profiles for England showed that life expectancy in the UK is increasing more slowly than the European average. Indeed, the UK was ranked 8th for male life expectancy and 18th for female life expectancy relative to 28 EU countries The number of years lived in poor health has also been increasing and now stands at 8.2 years for males and 9.7 years for females Source:

5 Regions & Centres Provide local health protection services, expertise, response and advice to the local NHS, local authorities and other partners Lead PHE s contribution to emergency planning, resilience and response Support local action to promote and protect health and wellbeing, and create a health care system which improves health and reduces inequalities Work with the Association of Directors of Public Health (ADPH) and Local Government Association (LGA) to help spread innovation, and advise on the appointment of public health specialists Undertake the relevant PHE role in the national protocol for managing risk of underperformance locally Ensure PHE staff and partners can access high quality data, statistics and expert knowledge, for commissioning local services Advise on compliance with the grant conditions including mandated and nonmandated services
