Welcome to the May 2015 edition of Hambleton, Richmondshire and Whitby Clinical Commissioning Group's newsletter. Strong local interest in lifesaving defibs Our HEN reps Jane Ritchie (Richmondshire), Linda Lloyd (Whitby and the surrounding area) and Ken Elliot (Hambleton) with YAS colleagues getting the defibs ready for distribution.
Over the past couple of months there has been a fantastic response from local communities in Hambleton interested in working with HRW CCG and Yorkshire Ambulance Service NHS Trust to install lifesaving defibrillators across the area. This interest follows on from the strong interest in Richmondshire and Whitby and the surrounding area, both of which are already well served with defibs due to earlier phases of the CCG s campaign. The defibrillator project has seen HRW CCG and Yorkshire Ambulance Service NHS Trust working with local communities to install lifesaving defibrillators in public places. This has also involved familiarisation sessions in how to use the kit. There are now 58 boxes installed across the CCG s area, due to go up to 79 by the end of June This map demonstrates the geographical spread:
Shuttle Bus use continues to grow! The number of passengers using the free shuttle bus between The Friarage Hospital, Northallerton, and James Cook University Hospital, Middlesbrough, continues to grow. Figures collected by HRW CCG which funds the bus show that in March 2015 more than 200 people used the bus in a single week. This is almost triple the number of people using the bus back in November The bus travels between the two hospitals ten times a day, and is available Monday to Friday (excluding public holidays). It picks up from outside The Friarage s main entrance, and drops off outside the Women and Children s entrance at James Cook Hospital. The bus is available to use for hospital patients and their families, and staff, not just for those accessing children s and maternity services. Click here for the

Mental Health Awareness Week marked with investment in new Hambleton service This year s Mental Health Awareness Week (11-17 May) has been marked by HRW CCG funding Northallerton-based charity Mental Health Support in Hambleton and Richmondshire to provide care and intervention to people in Hambleton suffering from mental health issues out of hours. The six-month pilot service is initially available on Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays between 4pm and 9pm. Mental Health Support provides support, advice and guidance in a safe and comfortable environment.
The service provides support to anyone experiencing mental ill health, aiming to respond to individuals needs with the appropriate level of skill. The service is led by experienced mental health professionals and supported by volunteers. The role of both the staff and the volunteer is to be available via phone call, and faceto-face contact. Every year, between May, Mental Health Awareness Week helps to raise awareness of mental health and wellbeing issues. It s led by the Mental Health Foundation, a national charity. Since its first Mental Health Awareness Week back in 2000 it has helped generate public debates around how anxiety, sleep deprivation and exercise can impact our mental health. This year s theme is Mindfulness. Click here to read more about the local service the CCG has commissioned. Dementia Awareness Week Dementia can happen to anyone and there's currently no cure. It can strip you of your memory, your relationships and your connection to the world you love, leaving you feeling isolated and alone.
To help to raise awareness, Dementia Awareness Week 2015 runs from May Led by Alzheimer s Society, the focus this year is on the belief that life doesn't end when dementia begins, and as much as possible should be done to help people living with dementia hold onto their lives and the things they love for longer. Dementia care is important to the CCG too. Over the past year, we ve committed 90,000 to provide two, one-year positions to look at mental health care pathways, in particular dementia, and work is underway to improve diagnosis coding for patients who have dementia symptoms but no diagnosis. Working with South Tees Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, the CCG has appointed a Dementia Champion at the Friarage Hospital. Working across the hospital and in the community with all groups of staff, the Dementia Champion has a number of roles. She trains and educates staff groups, with the focus being on improving care on wards and enhancing patient-centred. Initial feedback has highlighted that staff have found it really useful, and have gained a greater understanding about dementia and hands-on practical tips to care for patients with dementia. In addition, the CCG has also worked closely with North Yorkshire County Council and other CCGs to offer people living with dementia, their family and carers a dementia support worker who can help them link up with agencies and provide a wide range of information and advice. Local events happening this week include: Northallerton Library All week Sporting Memories are hosting a display. Pop along and find out about their new project and contribute your own sporting memories to the display.
Children s short-stay unit at the Friarage set for longer hours The opening times of the short-stay paediatric assessment unit (SSPAU) at the Friarage Hospital are to be increased over weekends and Bank Holidays from the end of May 2015 following the appointment of a new consultant. From 23/24 May, the unit will extend its opening hours from 10am-5pm to 10am- 7pm every Saturday, Sunday and Bank Holiday. Weekday opening hours will remain at 10am-8pm for the time being. Debbie Newton is chief operating and finance officer at HRW CCG, which commissions the service from South Tees Hospitals. She said: We are very pleased that the trust has appointed an extra consultant and is extending the opening times of the short-stay paediatric assessment unit at the Friarage. We are continuing to work closely with the trust to ensure that a safe and sustainable service, open 12 hours per day, seven days a week, is in place. Both organisations understand how important this is for local people. In January, the Trust announced it would have to temporarily change the hours the unit opened from 10am-8pm Monday to Friday and 10am-5pm on weekends and Bank Holidays. Originally it had been open 12 hours a day, seven days a week, but to maintain that level of service required a rota of seven full-time paediatric consultants and, despite the trust s best efforts to recruit, a shortfall of staff due to combination of vacancies and long-term sickness meant the temporary changes had to be made.
Shaping mental health services for children and young people A café-based workshop focusing on a range of mental health services for young people is taking place in Northallerton, and members of the public are being encouraged to attend and take part. Called DISCOVER!, it takes place on Friday 5 June 2015 at 9.30am-12.30pm at The Forum, Bullamoor Rd, Northallerton DL6 1LP. The region s Partnership Commissioning Unit, which commissions some services on behalf of all North Yorkshire CCGs, is working to improve care and would like local people to be part of important conversations about a range of mental health services for children and young people. DISCOVER! is rooted in Appreciative Inquiry, a process that aims to foster innovation and ultimately it will help to answer an important question: Tell us what works well about the services. How could we do more of that? To register your attendance please scrccg.pcudiscover@nhs.net by 29 May. If you are unable to attend this event but would like to get involved, please send comments to the above address or tweet the team
CCG commits to paying the Living Wage As part of its commitment to staff and local communities, HRW CCG has agreed to pay all staff at least the Living Wage, which is 7.85 per hour. As well as the obvious financial benefit to the individual employee, research has shown that the introduction of a Living Wage has provided employees with more job satisfaction and encouraged them to remain with their employer. The Living Wage is calculated by the Centre for Research in Social Policy at Loughborough University. The current figure of 7.85 per hour (outside of London) is higher than the minimum wage, which is 6.50 per hour. It is based on research which asked people to list the items they felt an individual would need to live a minimum acceptable standard of living. The final list included housing and transport, as well as household items and one-off expenditures (such as a washing machine and birthday presents). The Living Wage is an informal figure that is not legally enforceable unlike the compulsory minimum wage. The living wage has been adopted by more than 1,000 employers across the country, and benefits approximately 35,000 workers. The next stage is for the CCG to apply for the Living Wage Employer Mark, which is a nationally recognised award. To be accredited, the Living Wage needs to apply to all staff aged over 18 who work regularly on the CCG s premises, including directly employed staff, contracted staff and sub-contracted staff.
Friarage maternity centre welcomes a very special delivery their 100th baby The Friarage maternity centre has welcomed a very special delivery into the world its 100th baby. Isla Grace Alderson was born at 8.55am on Saturday 21 March, weighing a healthy seven pounds and half an ounce. She s the second child of proud parents Hayley and Paul whose son Isaac was also born at the Friarage in The centre has been a midwifery-led unit since last October and is run by a team of experienced and skilled midwives who provide friendly individualised care to women with straightforward pregnancies. Partners are welcome to stay in the ensuite rooms during and after the birth.
Women with high risk pregnancies can also still receive all their outpatient antenatal care at the Friarage with a consultant obstetrician but would need to deliver in a consultant-led obstetric unit where facilities for complications are more immediately available. Hayley said: My experience at the centre was really good it felt more relaxed and I received great one-to-one care from the midwife. Our son, Isaac, was also born here before the changes took place but I d definitely recommend it to any mums who are expecting and say if you ve got the opportunity to come here, do it s the way forward. Befriending Through Sport in Whitby Would you like to increase your weekly exercise and make new friends, in a fun, supportive, adaptable environment? Do you require assistance to access existing classes & sports activities at Whitby Leisure Centre? Are you interested in trying out new sports/activities? If the answer is yes, then Whitby, Scarborough and Ryedale s Disability Action Group s Befriending Through Sport programme may be of interest. Volunteers are also needed for the project. Active Buddies work to combat isolation for disabled and vulnerable adults in Whitby & surrounding area, facilitate sports sessions for small groups and help individuals access existing classes & sports activities at Whitby Leisure Centre. To find out more or apply contact Kelly Baxter, Project Co-ordinator, on or kelly@whitbydag.org.uk.
Carers Week 2015 Each year, Carers UK organises the national Carers Week campaign. This year, more than ever, carers are in the headlines with the new Care Act 2014 and the new Children and Families Act 2014 coming into effect from April this year. Both of these Acts have increased the right of all carers, whatever their age, to an assessment of their need and have removed the need for them to prove that they are undertaking substantial and regular levels of caring, making it easier for all carers needs to be recognised and supported. Your local Carers Support Service is provided through the local charities Hambleton & Richmondshire Carers Centre and Scarborough Ryedale Carers Resource. These two charities work together collaboratively to provide support, information and advice to all carers and young carers and their families across the CCG area. Click here to read about some of the local activities going on. Please support them in their endeavours to raise awareness and generate funds that support carers. Healthwatch drop-in On Wednesday 10 June Healthwatch North Yorkshire will be holding a drop-in surgery at Sainsbury s on Stainsacre Lane, Whitby, to listen to the public's views
on health and social care. They will be there from 1-4pm. Leyburn Medical Practice open evening 3 June Leyburn Medical Practice Patient Participation Group is holding an opening evening at the practice on 3 June from 7.30pm. Attending will be two guest speakers from the Hambleton & Richmondshire Carers Centre. Click here for more details. Breast cancer support group AGM The breast cancer support group at the Friarage Hospital, Northallerton, is holding its annual general meeting on Wednesday 20 May. New members are welcome to attend the meeting which will take place in the hospital s Scott Suite between 7pm and 9pm. 15 funding available to provide services which meet the day-to-day transport needs of local communities. The proposed changes and timetables are available on the NYCC website. You can view the proposals and participate in the consultation online by clicking here here. Vicky's Voice Dr Vicky Pleydell s latest blog post is now online. In this post Vicky reflects on her experiences and the lessons learnt from the dementia care her Mother received, throughout her illness. Please click here to read the post. Our Health Engagement Network We have set up a Health Engagement Network for local residents who care about the NHS so we can gather your views, through surveys, focus groups and conversations. We can then help to make services more responsive to your needs. We will also use the information to help make decisions about planning new services.
You can choose how much you get involved with the Network. We will send everyone around four surveys a year, but you may also be invited to small focus groups with a few other people to discuss specific issues.
