A new facial cleansing product called "Micellar Water" is Dr. Callahan's latest favorite product. It's been used in Europe for years and is just now becoming popular in the U.S. as a gentle and hydrating cleanser. 3 Dr. Callahan s News Dr. Callahan recently returned from a conference in Phoenix, Arizona where 20 expert Sculptra filler injectors selected from across the United States met to discuss Sculptra's successful treatment outcomes and what new options dermatologists will be able to choose in the very near future. Dr. Callahan also attended the American Academy of Dermatology's Annual Meeting in San Francisco, CA, along with several key SkinSmart Dermatology staff members in March. The meeting was an opportunity to learn and share practice successes and challenges with other dermatologists and dermatology experts. Staff attended continuing education sessions and Dr. Callahan participated in discussions and meetings with fellow dermatologists. 4 Emerging Research Increasing Incidence of Pediatric and Adolescent Melanoma in the U.S. By Elizabeth F. Callahan, MD Recent studies point to a concerning trend: Pediatric and Adolescent melanoma (ages 0 to 19 years) increased 2% per year between the years The reasons for this trend are not entirely clear and authors suggest that more research is needed. Luckily there are only a few hundred cases of childhood melanoma per year, but the low numbers make it difficult to study. The most critical theme that I found reviewing these studies was the fact that the "ABCDE" criteria we use to detect melanoma in adults may not work so well in younger patients. We typically depend upon "A" for asymmetry, "B" for border irregularity, "C" for color variegation, "D" for changing diameter, and "E" for evolution. Childhood and adolescent melanomas do not always appear with the irregularities that we frequently associate with ABCDE changes that help dermatologists detect thousands of new melanomas in adults every year. The mnemonic "CUP" has been suggested as a better tool for detecting melanoma in younger patients. The letter "C" for color (pink, red, changing), "U" for ulceration or upward thickening, and "P" for pyogenic granuloma-like lesions, or "popup" of new lesions.
