1 BENCHTALK The Northeastern Wisconsin Woodworkers Guild Newsletter Volume 34 Issue 6 July 2017 SUMMER PROGRAMS RETURNING TO UWGB CAMPUS, WOOD HALL Room 117 Map & directions pg. 2 July Program Wed, July 19, 7 pm Laminated Wood Bending with Rob Martens by Steve Lockhart Rob Martens is an accomplished woodworker in his own right but Rob had the good fortune of learning from his late father, Lyle. Lyle taught many in the guild (especially Rob) the secrets of laminated wood bending. Rob will cover the techniques he and his father have used over the years to produce curved furnishings. These techniques have been used to make fishing nets, quilting rings, furniture, toboggans, bows, dulcimers, and many other beautiful and functional items. Rob will also include images of many of the lamination projects. The presentation is intended as an overview of the processes used to make furnishings. Future classes may be offered by the host craftsman which cover the actual processes in the shop. Handicapped accessible entrance and parking on lower parking level next to building. General parking in Wood Hall surface lot. Bench Talk is the newsletter of the Northeast Wisconsin Wood Workers Guild, published prior to regularly scheduled monthly meetings. Submissions from members are welcome (articles, musings, questions, pictures.) In Aug the picnic replaces a regular meeting. There will not be a full newsletter, but notes of interest to members can be sent to editor, and shared with members Deadline for next newsletter is Sept 12, 2017.

3 New Board Members We had our annual election of officers at the June meeting. Fred Juengst retired from the position of Membership Chairman. Fred has been on the board for many, many years in various positions. He is a dedicated member of the Guild, always willing to help out when he can. We will miss his input and historical knowledge of the Guild. Thank you Fred for all you have done, we will miss you on the board. Kathy Kuritz, retired as our Treasurer. Kathy has been on the board several years and did an excellent job of scheduling meeting rooms, insurance, raffle license, paying bills, and generating monthly financial reports. Kathy has agreed to train our new treasurer, Chuck Druckery. Thank you Kathy for all of your hard work and support. Your new Membership Chairman is Ted Zabel, Ted is also our Public Relations chairman and the new Treasurer will be Chuck Druckery. Also joining the board as VP is Paul Murphy. Welcome all new board members. The board is looking forward to working to make the upcoming year interesting for all. On that note, I am asking each member to submit an idea or topic for a meeting. If you can t help out on the board or a committee, you should have an idea of what you would like to see at a meeting. You joined for a reason, to learn new things or become better at what you do. You can call or any board member with your idea. We would like at least 150 suggestions by the end of August. Give us your ideas and if possible the name of a person that we could contact for a presentation, or maybe a web site with the topic of interest. We look forward to your support of your Guild. 4 JUNE MEMBERSHIP REPORT by Ted Zabel I have become the Guild membership chair succeeding Fred Juengst. First we need to Thank Fred Juengst for his many years of service to our Woodworkers Guild. Fred has had many leadership roles in the Guild and has left a great legacy. He was membership chair for several years and has left us a great program to maintain and build from. Thank You Fred. I now have all the files, name tags, and membership lists with past and current memberships. From now on, please send your dues to me along with any questions about membership or your membership renewal date. I can be reached at or at tzabel5125@hotmail.com.. Our new member renewal process continues to work well. When your renewal date comes up at the end of the month, your name will appear in the next month Bench Talk Membership report. Please renew at that time or at the next meeting. If you do not respond, the next month you will receive a postcard reminding you to pay your dues. If no response is received from the postcard reminder by the end of the month, your name is removed from the active membership list. If you miss renewing after the card is sent, don t be surprised if you receive a call from me as another reminder We have 5 memberships due June 1, currently overdue. They are Bob and Kathy Claycomb, Greg Puza, Linda Surowiec and Tim Vichos. Please pay your dues as soon as possible. Dues are $15 for individuals, $20 for family, and $35 for business. We use this to find new potential members and to update changes to your data so we can keep our membership list current. If you are a member, with no changes, sign and check the member box. If your address, or phone number have changed, please check the member box and enter the change you want. If you are a visitor, do not check the member box but add your address if you would like 3 free issues of Bench Talk. Looking for your help in getting to know our new members. Many of us have become good friends with other members and when we attend meetings, we catch up on the latest news, problems, purchases etc. This often leaves the new members or prospective members sitting by themselves. It would help those new people feel more comfortable if we were also able to get to know them and their interests. 5 Review of June program on Segmented Turning By Ted Zabel The June Meeting featured Bob Beaupre showing his Open Segment Turning Technique. This is segmented lathe turning with calculated opening in rows between each segment. This was introduced to the US woodturners in Bob makes elegant bowls, vases and other shapes using this technique. The process begins by carefully designing the shape, vessel profile, ring diameters, number of rows and segments within each row. A computer program is used to accuracy determine size, color of each segment etc. Bob uses an Incra jig and a table saw to cut each pieces, some as small as toothpicks. The program Bob uses for his application is called Woodturner Pro or newer version is Segment Pro. Bob reviewed 4 gluing methods; he uses a modified Jim Driskell system with a computerized incremental drive system to accurately place each segment piece. Titebond s Quick and Thick is his preferred glue. All segment pieces must be free of dust, even a small dust particle can noticeably cant a segment. On lower count open segment bowels, Bob uses a moistened pipe cleaner to remove all glue within the open segment. To turn, he uses a ¼ inch detail spindle gouge with a high shear cut and very light shearing cuts. The initial shaping and all sharp edges are initially shaped with a sander while on a slow lathe speed. Lathe turning is at 800 rpm max. Spray lacquer is the preferred finishing often applying 6 aerosol coats. This a very sophisticated wood working technique resulting in very elegant vessels and other art items. Some pieces use as many as 8000 segment pieces with as many as 6 species of wood. Bob has used a great deal of ingenuity and taken a technique he first saw as an AAW demonstration and perfected tools, computer programs and techniques to improve the overall process. The finished products are first class. Annual Guild Picnic Our picnic is scheduled for Sun, August 20 th, at De Broux Park. The address is 2900 Brighton PL., Green Bay, Village of Bellevue. The major food items will be provided, burgers, brats, corn on the cob, buns, condiments, soda, water, coffee. I will have a sign-up sheet at the guild meeting on the 19 th. We are looking for volunteers to help with the planning and picking up needed items. This would be a good way to help support your guild. We will need someone to pick up the food, pick-up rent a grill, last year we rented a 2x5 trailer mounted grill from Biebel s in Green Bay ( ). We usually eat around noon, so the grill and food would need to be on site by 10:30 am. Members will be reimbursed for actual expenses, receipt is needed. Members attending the picnic usually bring a dish to pass, salads, desserts etc. The sign-up sheet will have a place for volunteers to set-up tables, chairs etc. and clean-up after.
