The Eating Disorder Foundation wishes you a very safe and happy holiday season. We hope you take a few moments to review our highlights from the past few months. Executive Director Message As the Foundation grows and moves forward in the New Year we have many new and essential programs and services that will be offered to help support those who are struggling with this serious mental health Illness. Although you may not be aware, you are likely connected to someone in your family, friend or community circle that has an eating disorder. It is no longer acceptable to tip toe around the words 'eating disorder'. We all have a responsibility to become educated, take action and break the silence that is associated with this illness. In 2012 we will put a major emphasis on breaking the silence and dispelling the myths that are associated with the many faces of eating disorders. Please stay connected to the Foundation and during the coming weeks we will keep you well informed of the activities that are planned for the New Year! I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for supporting, advocating, and volunteering with the Foundation over the past year. I would also like to extend our appreciation

A very special Thank You to our incredible Board of Directors for all your hard work and continuous support, especially our Chair, Mr. Vince Withers, whose leadership, commitment and passion towards eating disorders and mental health awareness goes far beyond the call of duty. Thank you for making such an important contribution to the province. You have helped change lives, in ways you may never know, and in some cases among people you may never have even met. Ellen Foley Executive Director ellen@edfnl.ca Program and Outreach Facilitator The Eating Disorder Foundation of Newfoundland and Labrador (EDFNL) is pleased to announce it has named Patricia Nash as its Program and Outreach Facilitator effective October, Patricia joins the Foundation after a long career in education. She taught junior and senior high for 33yrs. This experience is a great asset now in her work with the Schools Program. In this program Patricia is travelling to schools throughout Newfoundland and Labrador and presenting to staff members on what schools need to know about eating disorders. Ms. Nash was a founding member of the family support group Parents Of Hope in Then in 2005 she began co-facilitating the Bridge to Hope Education group for families. Patricia has extensive experience in working with and supporting families who are struggling with a loved one's eating disorder. She has also participated in many public presentations related to eating disorders. This includes speaking at the Community Capacity Building conferences in Gander and Labrador. In 2008 Patricia joined the Board of Directors for the Eating Disorder Foundation. She has great passion for advocating for services for eating disorder and a sincere desire to assist families who are in need of supports. She has been involved in advocating work since Patricia also has a strong belief in the need to bring services like the Parent Support Groups to areas across the province. In 2006 Patricia graduated from Memorial with a Masters in

She now brings this skill in counselling to her work at the Foundation. We are very excited to have Patricia as our newest staff member! You may contact her at or by patricia@edfnl,ca Eating Disorder Foundation Fall Fundraisers We extend our many thanks and appreciation to our wonderful volunteers, corporate friends and the general public in helping us make our 2011 fundraising events a great success. Below is a recap of our great events! We encourage you to get involved in our events for 2012! F.J.Wadden Winning Team L-R: Terry, Donny, Bill, Dolores, Scott, Mike, Ted Remembering Renata Golf Tournament This years Remembering Renta Golf Tournament was held on September 22, 2011 on a beautiful sunny day! The wonderful support we received from all of our participants was overwhelming. A total of $13,000 was raised for the Foundation. We especially want to thank our Co-Chairs Ted Cantwell and Steve Bragg and the numerous sponsors and volunteers who made this one of our best events yet! Check out the photos posted on the SNAPSt. John's website. Hope Always Walk This years Walk for Hope was a great success. In addition to increasing eating disorder awareness across Newfoundland and Labrador, we raised $14, Hundreds of walkers put on their running shoes and walked around local parks and trails in Paradise, Conception Bay North, New-Wes Valley, Corner Brook, Sally's Cove and Happy Valley - Goose Bay and St. John's. We are so pleased that our walk has expanded to many communities across the province. We were delighted to see so many of our friends and supporters participating in the Walk, it's this kind of support that encourages the Foundation to continue to focus on its mandate of supporting our eating disorder families.

We appreciate this commitment and support, and you need to know that your contribution is making a very positive difference. Check out the Hope Always walk photos on the SNAP St. John's website. *Special thanks to the HOPE ALWAYS planning committee members Tina, Nicole, Melissa, Bev, Dolores, Lindsay, and Carolyn. The 4th Annual Concert of Hope was once again a sell out show! Guests packed the Arts and Culture Centre to see The Masterless Men and Shanneyganock rock the stage! This years concert raised almost $26,OOO! This is the highest amount rasied to date at any of the Foundation fund raisers! We thank the wonderful audience who purchased tickets and came out to see the show! We look forward to seeing you next year! We also thank the Arts and Culture Centre and last but certainly not least Mr. Wilf Curran (EDFNL - Vice Chair), who has turned the annual Concert into one of the best shows in the province! To check out the Concert of Hope photos click here This year the organizers of the annual Christmas at the Glacier, kindly donated a booth to the Foundation. Volunteers and Staff gave out information on eating disorder services offered in the province and sold 50/50 tickets. We sold 2000 tickets and raised $ The winning ticket was #0710, and the names that appeared on the ticket were Shandelle Meeker and Denise Fleet. Congratulations to the lucky winners. UlllE-Dt$OIDfi UWfOU.uUU JDUUAIiOtiOf AID luu,oot Community Services to implement a "Let's Talk Eating Disorder School The purpose of this program is to visit twenty-five schools across Newfoundland and Labrador and educate school professionals on eating disorders. The presentation discusses such things as: what teachers need to be aware of related to eating disorders in the school system; how to be preventive; how to assist a young person who has an eating disorder and what services are available in the province for someone dealing with an eating disorder. This fall this program has met with great success. So far thirteen schools from across the province have accepted the invitation for staff to hear the presentation. Schools have been generous with their time allowing the talk during a staff meeting or have arranged a meeting just for this informative talk. The concentration this fall was on schools outside of the St. John's area and we are delighted at the response from schools. Public health nurses and the RCMP have been invited to attend the school presentation and feedback from both has been wonderful; they learn information about provincial eating disorder services that they did not know existed. A number of guidance counselors in schools have been very grateful to learn of services available and have reached out to the Foundation for further for resources that they were not aware of before this Program. Through the Community q,... Fund, grants are provided to organizations, hospitals and agencies focused on improving access to mental health care and making a positive impact in their community. The EDFNLwill use the funds to increase its efforts to encourage and educate families on the critical importance of early detection and early treatment, the two pillars necessary for a successful recovery. "We at Bell are extremely pleased to lend our support to the Eating Disorder Foundation and to almost 50 other community organizations across the country that are part of the Bell let's Talk Community Fund's first year," said Mary Deacon, Chair of the Bell Mental Health Initiative. "These groups are truly making a difference at the grassroots level. We're very proud that, through grants from our Community Fund, we will be helping them to provide much needed resources to enhance mental health services and programs for those affected by mental illness." The Eating Disorder Foundation of Newfoundland and Labrador (EDFNL) is a leadership advocacy group dedicated to promoting research and providing public support services and information about matters related to eating disorders, including information on available treatment services for individuals and families who experience disordered eating. The Bell Mental Health Initiative is a multi-year charitable program that promotes mental health across Canada via the Bell Let's Talk anti-stigma campaign and support for community care, research and workplace best practices.
