PO Box 5074 Toledo, OH The Goings On Around Point Place/Shoreland MARCH 2015 COLLINS CARED TOLEDO CARES POINT PLACE CARES by Pat Konwinski On February 11 the Community came together to pay our respects to our Mayor to honor his memory and what he truly cared about. I saw a few Point Place residents along with our councilwoman Lindsey Webb at the ceremony at Savage Hall that evening. There were approximately 2,000 community members who knew and respected him. Speakers spoke about his truly CARING for the community as a whole. They spoke of his Irish sense of humor, his genuine laugh but most of all his commitment to make Toledo a better place. Hence the slogan YOU WILL DO BETTER IN TOLEDO. This brings to mind his talk to us, the Point Place/Shoreland residents some 13 short months ago whereby he gave us his plan for defining Point Place. Engage in a community oriented streetscaping process Define entrances to Point Place and the Shoreland area. Provide support through existing businesses. Continuing the legacy and vision of the late Howard Pinkley. Listen and Respond to what our community needs. As we know what is planned and talked about doesn t necessarily come to pass, but we owe it to Mayor Collins and mainly ourselves to keep these five points in mind as a legacy that we too do CARE.
Point Place Business Association General Membership Meeting Wednesday, March 18th, 2015 The March meeting will be held at Capricorn Banquet Hall, 6182 N. Summit Street, Toledo, Ohio Social Networking will be at 6:00 PM. Dinner Meeting will be at 6:30 PM. Dick Eppstein from the Better Business Bureau will be the speaker for that evening. He will tell us about some of the many scams which are happening right now (both business and personal) as well as give us some advice on how to avoid them. Dinner will be catered by Kelly's Catering. The cost of the meal is free for members and $10.00 for guests and honorary members. From our President I am proud and honored to be elected as the president of the PPBA this year. This is a great group of people, representing a wide variety of organizations and expertise. I look forward to working with the board and with all of you to advance the economic and business interests of Point Place. Our goals this year include: 1. Increase membership. We have over 100 members, but there are still many Point Place business that don't have any representation in our association. 2. Relevant programs and speakers. We are working to streamline our monthly programs, and offer speakers and subjects that are meaningful and valuable to all our members. 3. Strategic and effective committees. Our committees are where a lot of planning and work gets done. We have a new committee called "Destination Point Place" which is a combination of the former economic development committee and an additional focus on getting people to come to Point Place. Not only is Point Place the best place any place, our businesses and organizations are the best, too. It's our job to let everyone know! The next meeting of the Visions of Cullen Park is March 25 th at 6:30pm at CrossPoint Community Church at the end of Onondaga Avenue. A representative of Ohio Sea Grant will talk about Lake Erie pollution. The meeting, as always, is open to the public. Upon researching recently, it was verified that the Westernmost Point of Lake Erie is located on Summit Street between Cullen Park and the lighthouse, specifically at the bridge. After a meeting with Denny Garvin, Commissioner of Parks, we have been promised a 15 foot buoy which will be placed at the sight with a sign designating its significance. It will offer a photo op such as the one in Key West, Florida. Visions of Cullen Park By Vee Stader Visions other projects include promoting The Biggest Birding Week here in the Point and establishing butterfly gardens. Work on the park related to the EPA grant is scheduled to begin July 15 th. Remember we are open to ideas. Also, anyone who participated in the Kroger Rewards Program be aware the period ends on March 31 st and you must re-register after April 1 st. This is a large part of our treasury. We ask for your support. Call me if you do not participate now but would like too. There s no cost to you. We would appreciate it. Thanks. You can t stop the waves, but you can learn to surf. John Kabat-Zin Reservations are required by Monday, March 16th, Please register at or by calling Mary Lichtenwald at in order to
Downstream By Len Syrek On February 4, 2015 I had a second opportunity to speak before the Ohio State Senate Agricultural Sub- Committee about our concerns for clean drinking water. The following is a copy of the statement I presented on February 4, 2015 Testimony of Len Syrek Point Place Business Association- Economic Chairman Lake Erie Waterkeeper Inc. Board Member Submitted as Written February 4, 2015 Chairman Hite, Vice Chairman Uecker, Ranking Member Gentile and members of the Committee: Senate Bill 1 Thank you for this opportunity to speak today on behalf of over 400,000 folks in Toledo. Harmful Algal Blooms (HAB) overcame Toledo s Water Plant last August 2, Some things are not forgotten easily! Downstream: Living on the shores of the Maumee River as it enters Lake Erie is a great opportunity for any nature lover. Sunrise and sets are spectacular, temperatures in the summer are cooler, boating and fishing is fun but the swimming and skiing is limited. Tourism is down, maybe for good cause! Whatever enters the river upstream will pass by our shores, but at what cost? Paying additional upgrades to the water treatment plant to filter out thick green water (cost)! Increased cost in chemicals used to filter drinking water (cost)! Storm water runoff systems and upgrades are a (cost). One million cubic yards of sediments annually requires dredging! Open lake dredging and depositing of same! Just think, 50 years x 1,000,000 cubic yards of mud is a lot of mud deposited! Muddy water all year long in Western Lake Erie while the rest of the lake is blue! Thank You: For moving quickly on a bill to address spreading manure on frozen and snow covered ground. Dredging is always an issue. Dirt entering upstream and the accumulative deposits of years worth of existing sediment just never allow western Lake Erie to clear up. Phosphorus Reduction in all areas of entry should be explored.. We who live downstream are asking for relief and maybe, some day, clean water!

Rare Art Exhibit- March 20th, 22nd, and 23 rd Edward E. York passed away of lung cancer in May 1986 in the Veterans Administration Hospital in Ann Arbor at the age of 66. A man who serviced our country in WW II and created incredible art while living an isolated life due to PTSD. Some of his art was destroyed and other sold off in pieces. His work is one of a kind and he even made his own tools and paints. He was a man of many talents, a perfectionist, and man with a beautiful mind. He is a Toledo artist that should not be forgotten. Come see his work and learn about his life.

Enriching our Community-1 Child at a Time with Help from our PPBA. Ottawa River School is striving to close the student achievement gap of our students and improve their lives. My name is Kimberly Beale and I am hosting the Glass City Author Event here in Toledo on October 8, The event will be held at the Toledo Seagate Convention Center and I am proud to announce that there will be over 120 Authors in attendance. With the planning for the event already in full swing we are looking for local businesses that would be willing to become sponsors. The money from sponsors will go towards the rental of the hall and advertisement for the event. The money we gain from ticket sales & raffles will be donated to a local charity. Human Trafficking has become a major issue not only around the country but also in NW Ohio. As a group we want a chance to be able to give back to the community and help those who are victims of human trafficking. We have chosen Second Chance as our charity to give back to. Second Chance is currently the only prostitution and trafficking-specific program in Toledo, Ohio that follows the Social Work Code of Ethics and offers quality and comprehensive programming in partnership with professionals and survivors. The program has sought to not only help individual women and girls but to engage in community change as well. ( Also, in addition to donating to Second Chance, we have decided to set up a bin to collect both Adult and Children books on the day of the event. We will be taking those books that we have collected and hand them out at Domestic Violence Shelters through NW Ohio. With this event being held in Toledo I wanted to see if any local businesses would like to become a sponsor and help us to make a difference in the community. All those who wish to sponsor will be recognized on the group s website and FB page. We are also creating a Glass City Year Book to be passed out at the signing for the readers attending. We have designated space in the yearbook where we can list sponsors. In addition we will also be including the name of all sponsors on the card we give to Second Chance. I believe this is a great opportunity for the community to come together. If anyone is interested in becoming a sponsor please send an to GlassCity2016@yahoo.com. Thank you again for your time and consideration. The school is a Point Place k-8 school located on 290 th St. and is a TPS Proud school. They are looking for a Community Partner/Business to get involved with the school and our local youth. The community partner could be a business, restaurant, trade union, church, senior center, or civic organization. This is something in the planning stage. If you are interested we could collaboratively plan the type of involvement your business could contribute. This is not a monetary contribution. It is more to improve academics, mentoring, and showing support for education. We want to work as a team with area business and community organizations. It takes a village to raise a child and we are hoping to reach out to The Best Place Anyplace to make our local school The Best Schools Anyplace. If you would like more info or think you might want to help please contact Michelle Wooley or Cindy St. Germain in person or call at
