1 PPBA NEWSLETTER AUGUST PPBA NEWSLETTER MAKE YOUR POINT AUGUST 2018 EDITION LETTER FROM THE PPBA PRESIDENT Joyce P Ejhinger 2018 President Summer is almost over... It s hard to believe students will be heading back to school in less than a month. Let s celebrate Summer at the picnic on August 15th, before we get into a very busy Fall... Our Mission Statement states that our purpose is to promote the general welfare and business interests of the Point Place and Shoreland Communities. Our September meeting will focus on this purpose. Thanks to Vee Stader, our main speaker will be Bill Burkett for our September meeting. He is with the City of Toledo s Economic & Business Development. He will talk about the permit process and the new processes and videos being implemented. Many businesses in our community have experienced difficulties in getting their permits to open in a timely matter. Though the strides the City of Toledo is making in this area, may not help them, it will help future businesses. If you know of someone thinking about opening or expanding their business, please invite them to join us. The dinner meeting will be Wednesday, September 19th. It will be held at RiverPoint Ministries UMC on 131st St. October 17th will be our annual Meet the Candidates Night. There are many important races and issues on the ballot. I welcome help from anyone who would like to help me in organizing the event. Mark your calendar, in November we will be having our PPBA Dinner Meeting on the 2nd Wednesday of the month. This is because the 3rd Wednesday is the night before Thanksgiving. The date is November 14th.

2 PPBA NEWSLETTER AUGUST A recent audit was done on the finances of the PPBA & both foundations. A complete report will be given in September but all went well. Thank You to our past Treasurer, Alan Buckenmeyer and present Treasurer, Mary Lichtenwald, for doing an outstanding job with our finances. Thank You to the audit committee, Tom Stagner, Jon Komperda and Brenda Kilburn. Continuing the celebration of our 70th Anniversary, I set up a display of the History of PPBA at the Point Place Library. The PP Historical Society graciously is letting us use their display case at the library. Please stop by and look at the display. Sign the guest book and leave a message. I have added some photos to the display. Howard Pinkley, past historian, put together over 20 scrapbooks of the PPBA and Debbie Hilton, our current historian, is continuing the yearly scrapbooks. She includes any newspaper articles and moments she collects over the year. I will be working on getting photos printed of our many activities for her to add to them. Debbie also stores them along with Easter Egg Hunt and PP Parade supplies and other signs and banners, free of charge at Merchant Landing Mini Storage. Thank You Debbie for this very generous inkind donation. Last, I have received a number of phone calls about the condition of some of the properties along Summit Street. Most of our businesses do a wonderful job with their landscaping. Their neat and decorative exteriors is not only inviting to customers but adds to the overall appearance of our community. Thank You to these businesses. The weeds along the street have gotten out of control in some areas. There is only so much the PPBA can do. Volunteers are doing a wonderful job keeping the flower pots watered and weeded. VJ Huffman and his crew keep up the flower beds at the Lighthouse and Cullen Park. All these volunteers are due our appreciation. There is a lady at Friendship Park CC that keeps up their flower beds. Point Place has displayed to the rest of the city, the pride we take on our community. VJ Huffman through Perf-a-Lawn also sprays the memorial bricks around the Lighthouse, free of charge to keep the weeds under control. This is a wonderful contribution to our community. Thank You VJ! There is no way for the PPBA to control the weeds along Summit St. It would be very costly and we would need permission, as they are private properties. If you know a business where the weeds are out of control, maybe you can mention it to them. Lend a hand or donate some weed control spray to them. Gathering at 5 pm to get grills started. Dinner will be when food is ready. PPBA is providing, hamburgers, brats, buns and all paper products. PPHS is providing pop, water & desserts. Potato Salad & Bake Beans will also be provided. Members of both groups are encouraged to bring a dish to share. There is no cost but you must make a reservation, so we know how much meat to purchase. Guests are welcome... This is being held in place of the PPBA monthly meeting. There will be no formal meeting, only announcements and motions that need to be voted on. We will be sharing stories of Point Place and the PPBA, since its origin. PPHS members, contact President Judy Manders to make your reservation. 4 PPBA NEWSLETTER AUGUST VISIONS OF CULLEN PARK UPDATES VISIONS OF CULLEN PARK UPDATES ` Visions of Cullen Park was privileged to have the new Commissioner of Parks, Recreation and Forestry, Karen Ranney Wolkins and District 6 Councilman, Chris DeLaney at the July meeting. The idea was to become acquainted and share goals. They both expressed their interest in returning in the future. The water level finally went down and the kayak docks were able to be installed. There has been concern about the boat launch docks being partially under water and being slippery to walk on. I spoke to Jeremy at Streets, Harbors and Bridges and he said it was being addressed. After much discussion regarding a butterfly garden, it was mentioned that for all practical purposes, one does exist near the vernal ponds due to milkweed and other plants which attract butterflies. Several people have posted beautiful pictures including colorful flowers. There are other spots in the park doing the same. Due to comments from park neighbors Police Chief Kral has ordered that issues regarding the light at the camera will be addressed and police crews will be watching for cars in the park after closing hours. "No Fishing" signs have been posted at the boat launch site due to anglers who interfere with boat traffic. With the fishing pier being available now there is no reason for this to be a problem. The next meeting is August 22 at 6:30 pm at CrossPoint Church. Everyone is welcome. Thanks to Pastor Mike for providing a place for the meeting. Till the next time, Vee. veestader@gmail.com

A few teams dropped out but still had a great group of golfers. Revenue was up along with Hole Sponsors. Thank You to our chairman, Dave Stickley of Greenwood Printing & Graphics. Thank You to all the volunteers, prize donors and Hole Sponsors. Thanks to Detwiler Golf Course & Black Peral. This event is the major fundraiser for our 2 foundations. Congratulations to all the winners.. This year's Golf Scrambles was dedicated to Jo Kneisley, a long-time dedicated volunteer.
