1 ISSUE Hooray! We have a new Manager! The Board announced that Amanda Rossman is our new General Manager and will start on January 29th. Please join me in welcoming Amanda to our Lodge and see information about Amanda elsewhere in the Bulletin. Several other happenings occurred during January: I hope you welcomed in the New Year appropriately. About thirty of us braved the cold and sumptuously dined, danced and toasted the New Year. Also, our employees enjoyed themselves during their holiday party. Thank you to all of our employees; without their dedicated work our Lodge wouldn t be what it is. We also hosted the Annual Hoop Shoot at the Regina Gymnasium. Three very talented young people: Will and Sydney Huber and Tate Lynch advanced to the District Tournament that was held on January 20th in Keokuk. Tate Franz made a valiant effort and we wish him better luck next time. It s nomination time please see the important information regarding officer and Trustee nominations for the Elk year. A vote to amend the Lodge By-Laws to have one Lodge Meeting per month in addition to Officer election voting will occur during the March 19th Lodge Meeting. Kindly send your nominations either by to the address shown below or by mail to my attention at the Lodge 637 Foster Rd., Iowa City IA Patronize & Participate BENEVOLENT & PROTECTIVE ORDER OF ELKS IOWA CITY LODGE NO. 590 Exalted Ruler Jack Zimmerman 637 FOSTER ROAD IOWA CITY, IOWA (319) FAX (319) ELKS590@ELKS590.ORG WEBSITE: ELKS BULLETIN Secretary's Desk February 1, 2018 PUBLISHED MONTHLY Please send items for the Board and other Lodge matters, in confidence, to my attention at: sec_ mgc_590@yahoo.com. Michael Carroll, Lodge Secretary Officer & Trustee Nominations and By-Law Amendment: Elk Year The Elk year begins on April 1st. The majority of our Officers and Trustees will advance or remain in their present positions. Each officer is elected to a one-year term. However, advancement from Lecturing Knight to Exalted ruler requires a four-year commitment. The other officers also serve one-year terms and may advance through the other positions. Following their term as Exalted Ruler, or a member by election serve a three-year term as Trustees. Together, the three Trustees, the Exalted Ruler and the three knights compose the Board of Directors (House Committee). Compensation for officers and trustees is subject to review and change and is based on consecutive years of service, not prior service. Presently, Trustees receive a thirty-three percent discount of their Golf and Pool Membership fees for their service. The Exalted Ruler and the three Knights begin with a twenty-five percent discount of these fees. This amount increases each year, until after four years the discount is one-hundred percent. The Secretary
2 and Treasurer receive compensation in the amounts of $1,800 and $100 per annum respectively. The other officers are not compensated. The Trustees and Officers are required to attend regular Lodge meetings and, in addition, the Leading Knight and Secretary are required to attend all District Deputy Clinics. The Exalted Ruler, Lecturing, Leading, and Loyal Knights and the Secretary are also required to attend State Elk meetings and the Exalted Ruler also attends the Annual National Elk Conventions. Compensation is provided for meals, lodging and transportation for attendance at these meetings. The following Officers and Trustees have indicated they will either advance or continue to serve for another year. Written and nominations for the following positions will be accepted if received by March 15th Only, initiated members in good standing are eligible to attend and vote during the March 15th Lodge Meeting. Motions to nominate additional candidates will be accepted prior to the motion for and a call to vote. By-Law Amendment: During the 2017 National Convention Lodges were allowed to hold one instead of two monthly meetings. It is proposed that: Iowa City Elk Lodge hold one monthly meeting on the third Monday of each month except the December meeting that will be on the first Monday. Presently, there are two monthly meetings. A vote to amend the By-Laws is required and will occur during the March 15th meeting. Officers & Trustees: Exalted Ruler Jeff Johnson, Loyal Knight Mike Berg, Leading Knight Terry Dahms, Lecturing Knight Scott Geisler, Secretary Michael Carroll, Treasurer Roger Beyhl, Inner Guard Open, Tiler Bill Courtney, Esquire Chris Bohlen, Chaplin Gary Urich, Trustees: Kurt Kimmerling, Jack Zimmerman, and Jon Goodvin Our New General Manager: Amanda Rossman, a native Iowan grew up in Dubuque and now lives in Marion. She graduated from the University of Northern Iowa with a degree in Communications: Public Relations and a minor in Marketing. Amanda has worked in the Hospitality Management/ Event Management field for over twelve years. Most recently she worked at the University Athletic Club for the University of Iowa and prior to that she spent most of her career working as the Catering Events Manager at the University of Northern Iowa. In her free time, Amanda likes to hike and travel she is also a self-proclaimed foodie who loves learning about, and especially eating food! Amanda loves working with people, is excited to join the Elk s family, and looks forward to meeting and working with all of us. This and That: The new Lodge outgoing server, Mail Chimp continues to improve. Please continue to either update addresses yourself using the link found in the itself, or send an update request to Michael Carroll at: sec_mgc_590@yahoo.com. Dress-Up, spiff-it,? Our Lodge Bulletin lacks that certain: Je ne c'est quoi. I m hoping that you as readers have ideas and suggestions to make our Bulletin more interesting, readable, and that tells you what you d like to hear about. I m thinking about colors, photos, etc. By now you know where to send those suggestions. No rest for the weary: Although the golf course lies under a blanket of snow; Ned and his crew are hard at work repairing the equipment that makes things so beautiful. The golf committee is planning the tournament dates, it s almost tax time, yes Alicia our Bookkeeper is busy getting things in order there s never a dull moment. Committees: Hey come on, there s lots to do around your Lodge and the Officers and Trustees can t do it all. The pool that we all enjoy needs some attention a pool committee is just the thing to organize and plan the many things that need to get done. Speaking of committees, what about entertainment/social, and let s not forget community service. It s all fun and it takes less time than you think.
