I 2018 we met the major challege of securig ew premises for the charity s office ad service base. Leatherhead Court provides a accessible, flexible locatio from which to grow our services ad develop a cetre of expertise for people with aphasia. 3 Services: Performace ad impact Life Participatio Approach to Aphasia The Life Participatio philosophy puts people with aphasia i the lead. It has uderpied Dyscover s services throughout our 24-year history. The focus is o everyday commuicatio skills that are relevat to the idividual. We aim to eable the perso with aphasia to recover a sese of purpose ad value. Our work to icrease public awareess of aphasia ad to boost commuicatio skills of family ad frieds, both cotribute to this aim. Stepped programme of group support Weekly group support sessios for people with aphasia form our core service. More tha 95% of these members have aphasia caused by stroke. We offer a phased programme of differetiated courses desiged to meet people s eeds as they recover ad adjust to their aphasia. We trai ad staff ad voluteers to judge whe it is right to offer support to a member, or whe it is better to wait. We provided 240 weekly support sessios to 93 me ad wome with aphasia. About 40% of the people we helped this year were uder 65. We have respoded to 52 ew referrals with idividual advice, assessmet ad where appropriate, itroductio to a Dyscover group. Support for families Family members play a vital role i the recovery ad adjustmet of people with aphasia. However, they too are impacted by the challeges ad stress of livig with aphasia. 81% of relatives say they highly value the respite from carig that Dyscover offers. 4 Our Speech ad Laguage Therapists offer log-term support ad advice. We also provide structured Coversatio Parters courses for couples ad opportuities to meet socially with other carers. 93% of couples rated the specialist support we provide as beig highly importat ad 73% of relatives gave Dyscover a overall satisfactio ratig of 10/10. Dyscover has helped me eormously Liz s daughter Suzie has bee comig to Dyscover sice her stroke five years ago, whe she was just 44. It impacted her whole family. Says Liz, Dyscover are there with advice whe I eed it, but most importatly, they help Suzie with her aphasia ad self-cofidece. That makes Suzie happy ad therefore makes me happy. Laura, Suzie s 15-yearold daughter, has gaied uderstadig ad acceptace of her mother s aphasia by takig part i Dyscover activities alogside other families. At High Ashurst we provided opportuities for childre affected by a paret s aphasia to meet others i a similar positio. Primary Progressive Aphasia Primary Progressive Aphasia (PPA) is a rare demetia affectig parts of the brai that process laguage. Dyscover s pioeerig phased programme for couples livig with the coditio is uique i the South East. This year we supported 48 people through telephoe advice, early stage workshops, six-week coversatio traiig courses for couples, ad follow-o sessios. We regularly lik with expert cliicias ad researchers through Rare Demetia Support i Lodo, ad have bee ivited by fellow professioals to share our expertise at etworkig evets ad study days. Outreach, awareess raisig Oe of Dyscover s primary objectives is to share our skills ad kowledge. We also work to raise public awareess of aphasia. We received very positive feedback from the couples who atteded our pioeerig Primary Progressive Aphasia course. Aphasia Ambassadors 18 Dyscover members have voluteered as Aphasia Ambassadors this year. They have made 19 presetatios to audieces ragig from Patiet Participatio Groups to commuity orgaisatios. Two iterviews were broadcast o BBC Radio Surrey. Ambassadors beefit too, gaiig i cofidece ad self-esteem as they give public presetatios about the effects of aphasia ad how Dyscover has helped them. Courses We are reachig more people by ruig our courses for other orgaisatios. Our six-week Coversatio Parters course was very positively received by participats ad trustees of TALK i West Surrey. Our PPA course, commissioed by Odiham Cottage Hospital Trust to ru i Hampshire, attracted couples from Southampto, Readig ad Oxford. Healthwatch Surrey A six-moth project fuded by Healthwatch Surrey aimed to fid ways to improve access to NHS services for people with aphasia. We cotacted 34 GP ad 18 detal practices. Presetatios to staff i a variety of health care settigs were give by Dyscover persoel ad Aphasia Ambassadors. Two iterviews featurig Aphasia Ambassadors were broadcast o BBC Radio Surrey. Social media Facebook ad Twitter are eablig Dyscover to reach a wider audiece. Our Twitter followig icreased to over 440 as we shared iformatio with aphasia orgaisatios ad professioals i the UK ad abroad. Regular posts o Facebook gave updates o our activities. Traiig All ew Dyscover voluteers atted a traiig day, as well as receivig o-the-job support ad supervisio. We ecourage members to take up ew opportuities ad challeges to boost their cofidece ad aid their progress towards a more purposeful life. Our partership with Mole Valley Accessible Sport has eabled members to participate i swimmig sessios ad supported golf. Specialist courses led by Chilter Music Therapy ad ipad skills sessios from our ow therapists were also popular. We held 10 activity sessios durig the summer break ad six at Easter, egagig a total of 93 participats. Members are hoig their skills, thaks to expert tuitio at Pachesham Golf Cetre. Professioal liks ad research About 20% of our members have egaged with aphasia specific research: Measurig our impact Progress towards idividual goals is moitored ad measured by our therapists o a ogoig basis. We use feedback forms ad video aalysis to assess the gais made by participats i our coversatio parters courses for couples. Our aual satisfactio questioaire idicates that Dyscover members ad their relatives highly value the services we offer. 93% of relatives ad 85% of members highly value the security of log-term support. 86% of members ad 100% of relatives gave Dyscover a overall ratig of 8/10 or higher. People Trustees We have achieved our aim of broadeig the skills of the board through a recruitmet campaig, ad have co-opted two ew Trustees with skills i staff developmet, chage maagemet ad busiess leadership. We have bee successful i securig a ew chair of Trustees to succeed Gill Jackso whe she retires i October. Maagemet team The Maagemet team combie cliical expertise with fudraisig ad marketig kowledge to oversee service delivery ad make recommedatios to Trustees o service ad orgaisatioal developmet. This year, Alice Owe, Developmet Officer, has take o resposibility for corporate fudraisig ad also coordiated the logistics of movig to Leatherhead Court. Staff Rosemary Towsed, our Chief Executive, has ably led the orgaisatio through a period of growth ad chage. The staff team has grow to 10, who all work part-time, providig the total equivalet of just over four full-time posts. They all showed great commitmet ad flexibility i adaptig to the chages ad solvig problems associated with movig to our ew cetre at Leatherhead Court. I our aual satisfactio questioaire, 69% of members ad relatives rated Speech ad Laguage Therapist leadership as highly importat. Voluteers This year we have beefitted from the skilled support of 28 committed voluteers who worked directly with members i our coversatio groups ad ie who supported marketig, fudraisig ad goverace. Last year we provided traiig ad practical experiece for short-term voluteers cosiderig a career i Speech ad Laguage Therapy (SALT). Three have bee accepted o SALT masters courses. We actively ecourage ad support people with aphasia to cosider voluteerig as part of their ogoig recovery. At least a quarter of all members curretly egage i some type of voluteerig, from Ambassador roles for Dyscover, to roles i research, fudraisig or commuity activities. Commuity partership with City Uiversity o two projects. A 12-moth trial of EVA Park, a olie virtual commuity for people with aphasia. The INCA project to eable aphasic people to make more effective use of the iteret. 100% of participats i our Learig to Live with Aphasia programmes reported improvemets i both their commuicatio ad cofidece over the past year. Desiged ad delivered module o commuicatio after stroke for eight-week Life after Stroke Course, a NHS ad third sector collaboratio led by Ashford ad St Peter s Hospitals NHS Trust with the Surrey Recovery College. 71% of people i our Movig O groups were highly satisfied with the ecouragemet to cotiue their recovery. 74% across all our groups said they were highly satisfied with the friedships that have grow out of attedig. 92% highly valued the cosistecy of staff ad voluteer support they received. The staff team meet regularly to pla, moitor ad develop services. Our future plas Our committed voluteers provide cosistet support at the weekly group meetigs. Ivited to speak o Dyscover s stepped programme of support for Primary Progressive Aphasia (PPA) at a study day led by the Lodo Acquired Neurology Cliical Excellece Network ad the Aphasia Research Group. O the steerig group of a PhD project, which aims to equip more Speech ad Laguage Therapists to carry out coversatio therapy for couples with PPA. Reveues from Urestricted doatios, grats ad subscriptios icreased sigificatly from 61,784 last year to 87,770, with icreases i doatios from busiess orgaisatios ad grats from charitable trusts. Restricted fuds received from charitable trusts reduced from 82,098 last year to 71,295. Total resources expeded durig the year icreased from 194,840 last year to 218,939 this year, of which 205,931 was spet o charitable activities. 10,216 of the icrease was o persoel costs ad 11,410 of depreciatio o equipmet followig our premises relocatio. 11.4% 0.3% 18.2% 0.0% 70.1% Supporters of all ages ejoyed a 10K walk over the South Dows. The Board are satisfied that Dyscover has established review systems that uder ormal circumstaces, should allow these risks to be maaged ad mitigated to a acceptable level i its day-to-day operatios.
