The gist of the article is that after 40 years of research, scientists have finally found the secret behind happiness and attribute it to genetics, events, and values. This research shows that genetics and past events contribute up to 88% of our happiness quotient and are things we really can t control. The other 12% are four things that we CAN control - - faith, family, community, and work. Out of those four factors, we spend most of our waking time, i.e. 60%, at work. It is reasonable to assume that to be happy we also must be satisfied in our choice of career. The author of the article noted that work can bring happiness by marrying our passions to our skills, empowering us to create value in our lives and in the lives of others. I agree and would venture to say that our choice to be part of the healthcare industry, even with constant changes in reimbursement and regulations, is rewarding and creates true value. Although I am not involved in direct patient care, I feel that I make a difference for our patients each day. In fact, I wake up each morning and am excited to go to work because I think about our patients and how we all can impact their lives for the better. Many of you will be taking vacation in the upcoming weeks and month, and I ask that during some of the downtime you think about why you chose healthcare and how you can create value for our patients and each other. Also, I would like to congratulate the graduating fellow class of The graduation ceremony on June 16th was a great time to come together and celebrate our successes. I am pleased to announce that 100% of the graduating class remained with Ochsner after their fellowship. I would also like to welcome the new fellows that will be part of the Ochsner family beginning on July 7th. These individuals are very accomplished and have a passion for healthcare. George Papa Bear Halas Current Fellows Share Their Thoughts... Hello from the 2014 OHS Fellowship Class! As the incoming Administrative Fellow Class of 2014, we are excited and looking forward to becoming immersed at Ochsner Health System. After one week on the job, our initial impressions of the executive team, program leadership, fellow colleagues, and the overall fellowship program structure have been extremely positive. During this first week, we have been able to interact with leadership teams across the health system and realize the unique culture of each facility. This eye-opening experience will inform our practice as health administrators in the future. Overall, we are all elated to begin this new chapter of our professional lives. We are humbled by the opportunity to learn from OHS leadership. Collectively, our cohort is excited to gain career direction, observe executive leadership styles and work habits, build invaluable relationships with administrators and clinicians, and understand the complexities of an integrated health system. These skills will prepare us to be effective leaders in the increasingly dynamic climate of healthcare. We hope to gain new competencies, including interpersonal and managerial skills as well as develop our identities as members of the healthcare management profession. We are grateful to have been chosen to be fellows at OHS this year and look forward to learning as much as possible from OHS administrative leaders, clinicians, and patients. 4 Page 4 Supply Chain Fellowship Update Grant Walker, VP Supply Chain & Preceptor I want to welcome all our 2014 Fellows to our Ochsner Family. I look forward to meeting each of you. The Supply Chain Division is excited to start our new Fellowship program in July. It will be tied to the Administrative Fellowship program for core leadership training and activities. We have an exciting Supply Chain curriculum with 19 rotations. Our goal is to have our Fellows proficient in all processes and able to perform operational functions in each area. The rotations include: Lawson Supply Chain System, Purchasing, Negotiation, Contract Administration, Inventory Management, Receiving-Distribution, Pharmacy, Corporate Supply Chain, Finance/Analytics, Value Analysis, Accounts Payable, and Project Management. We have four new innovative strategies/projects our fellows will participate in: S3P, Radiopharmaceutical Production, Consolidated Service Center, and Vendor Partnerships. In 2013 Supply Chain created a regional purchasing coalition (S3P) which will help affiliate hospitals to lower their pricing and will generate revenue for Ochsner. In 2014 we will begin construction of a Molecular Imaging and Radiopharmaceutical Production Center which will generate products to be used at Ochsner and to sell to regional hospitals. We have begun implementing our Consolidated Service Center concept and upon completion we will sell these services to other hospitals. Our vision for the future is to re-engineer supply chain operations and create a new business model using these four strategies which will move us from a cost center to a revenue generator. As you can see in the graph below we will begin to generate revenue in 2015 with incremental increases until 2020 when revenue exceeds our operational expenses resulting in net income. Supply Chain s mission historically was to reduce cost by negotiating better contracts, standardization of products and medical supplies, reprocessing and reducing utilization. This is a finite strategy and these opportunities will decline as we complete all available opportunities. Our revenue strategy is essential for our success in the future. So What Does This Mean to Our Fellows? As you can see we are in the middle of a large growth mode. We will use our Fellows to fuel our need for new innovative Supply Chain leaders! 5 Page 5 Former Fellow Shares His Experiences Mike Hill, Jr., Manager, Office of Strategy Management It was three years ago this month that I had the distinct honor of being chosen as an Administrative Fellow at Ochsner Health System. I remember fondly waiting with baited breath after the grueling interview process and memorable bonding experience in the French Quarter with hopes that I would be part of the incoming fellow cohort. The competition was fierce and each one of the applicants had interesting life experiences and could immediately provide true value to the System and to Louisiana. A few days later during my morning commute to UAB from Montgomery, Alabama, Mike Hulefeld called me with the good news that I was accepted into the Fellowship. The one-year fellowship quickly passed, but the lessons learned during that time have continued to mold my personality and career path. The Fellowship has a rich history of producing outstanding leaders in health care, and is a rare opportunity to learn the intricacies of a nine hospital, integrated health system in a state where access to health care is an obstacle for many residents either through income or geography. Within this incubator of knowledge, I learned three important life lessons think outside the box, create solid relationships with your colleagues, and practice empathy towards patients and each other. As we all know, health care is constantly changing and is fraught with declining reimbursements. In order to successfully provide affordable patient-centered care, we must be at the forefront of developing innovative solutions to problems, which means we must step outside of our comfort zone and think outside the box. I learned this lesson through the corporate rotation under Mark Muller after devising ways to provide more efficient post-acute care services for our patients. Mark s mentorship was truly above reproach. The second and third lessons really go hand in hand. To be successful in any business or career choice, you must build relationships with your colleagues and practice empathy. I came to New Orleans only knowing a handful of people, with the vast majority consisting of my Fellow colleagues. It is important to build a network where you can discuss problems, bounce off ideas, and know that others will support you. It is in this network of camaraderie where the Fellowship is truly a blessing. Health care is a team -based sport and we all must collaborate to be successful. The Ochsner Administrative Fellowship program creates the environment to chose your path. Rest assured, though, that others before you will provide their support during the journey. After three years at Ochsner, I am still grateful for the opportunity in 2011 to be a part of a program that is committed to putting patients first. 6 Fellowship Graduation: A graduation ceremony was held on the afternoon of June 16th in the beautiful Ochsner Academic Center to celebrate the completion of the Operations, Finance and HR fellows. The afternoon was filled with lots of laughs as the preceptors Roasted the fellows; sharing stories about their journey through Ochsner and the fellowship. The graduating fellows for operations: Erica Brown Barousse, Bridget Fitzpatrick, Tiana Lukas, Dolev Melamed, Jason Moran, Elizabeth Stowers, and Meredith Sarringhaus. The graduating fellows for finance: Stephanie Bissell and David Grimes. The graduating fellow for Human Resources: Rachel Pittman Please take a moment to congratulate each fellow on their commitment to the program, as well as their continued commitment to Ochsner,as they all secure employment. Upcoming Recruitment Efforts for 2015/16 Fellows The Operations Fellowship recruitment process is fast approaching.
