2 PUBLIC IMAGE NARRATIVE Media Outreach as the Rotary Club of Honolulu approaches its 2015 Centennial of Service Above Self, work has begun with the Star-Advertiser and major newspapers on Maui, Kauai and the Big Island to generate a tabloid filled with stories on the history of the Club, major projects, photos, description of all clubs statewide/photo of each President, features on the beneficiaries of our statewide Rotary efforts to make a difference at home and around the world, and a profile of the Rotary International President K.R. Ravi Ravindran, who will be in Honolulu to celebrate the Centennial of Rotary in Hawaii July 5-9. Feature stories on our Centennial International Service Project in Cambodia, where 50 participants from Honolulu, including 18 Club members, are helping build a classroom building and 10-room teacher dormitory, and on our Centennial Community Project at the Boys and Girls Club Spalding Clubhouse Gym will be generated in addition to the tabloid. The RI President will be featured in a cover story in Midweek July 15, When cabins at the YWCA of Oahu s Camp Kokokahi was renovated by RCOH, that Weinberg Friends project netted $10,000 for Waikiki Health s Youth Outreach (YO) program, which has been a longtime beneficiary of RCOH s time and treasure. The highlights and photos were also posted in the Tradewind, and on our website and Facebook page. All you can do is try...coverage is not guaranteed, nor is the use of video or pictures of events taken by the club and supplied to the media. Club has submitted at least 2 news releases to traditional media this year News releases were sent regarding the YWCA Camp Kokokahi work project and presentation of the Weinberg grant to Waikiki Health. Additionally, Waikiki Health recognized our club s donation on their Facebook page and sent a release that resulted in a brief notice in Pacific Business News on March 13, The announcement of the Centennial Boys and Girls Club Spalding Clubhouse partnership with RCOH was also shared with the media, but coverage did not result, as far as we know. However, a feature story on our partnership with the Boys and Girls Club to renovate their Spalding Clubhouse Gymnasium was posted on the HawaiiReporter.com website. Club Newsletter our weekly Tradewind focuses on current and upcoming events and meetings with colorful detail, and photographs capturing the fellowship during club meetings, quarterly Paul Harris meetings (when club members meet off-site at fellow members places of business), and opportunities available at other clubs. Updates are posted on our website, and facebook.com/honolulurotary offers another venue for communication. Training on Telling the Rotary Story to enhance membership recruitment efforts this year, our Membership Director launched a ONE:ONE Initiative engaging each member to bring a new one. Coaching script cards were developed and distributed. Questions and answers on My Rotary Eperience were also collected and shared on the Club web site. Rotary tee shirts and pins as usual, when Rotarians are at projects or at work, they are encouraged to wear their bold RCOH wheel-logo tee shirts and/or Rotary pin, but awards for doing so are not in place. Etra tee shirts are taken to all service project sites so members who don t have one or forgot to wear it won t feel out of place. The profile photo that graces our Facebook page is of members at a Club service project wearing their Rotary tee shirts. The true reward comes when a stranger looks at your tee shirt or Rotary pin, and inquires, What is that what does it mean? We recommend to Rotarians to continually raise awareness about Rotary. During the Centennial year, the public image efforts will be even more dynamic Rotary Minutes at each meeting, a club member is invited to share a Rotary Minute, and while the club has not devoted an entire meeting to teaching how to talk story the member who takes the microphone is actually doing just that: focusing on why joined-why stayed or a special Rotary moment. Attending members can t help but dig into their own memories each week, to recall moments and mentally prepare for the time they will present a Rotary Minute. This feature is also enjoyed by visitors to our Club.
