1 First Friday Newsletter September 1, 2017 Volunteer Services - University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics Volunteers recognized at 1,000 Hour Luncheon From the left: Virginia Spalding, Kathy Burkle, Lauren O'Neill, Tom Westlund, Cathy Miller and Chief Medical Officer Teri Brennan The following volunteers were recognized at the Volunteer Services 1,000 Hour Luncheon on 31, 2017: Cathy Miller reached an hour milestone of 5,000 hours! Cathy began creating baby hats for U newborns in November of Cathy was recognized for her 1,000 hour milestone in April o The following volunteers were recognized for contributing 1,000+ volunteer hours: Kathy Burkle began volunteering in 1995 in the Volunteer Services Office as a Volunt Receptionist over her lunch hours. When she retired from UIHC from a full-time Finan Analyst position in Ophthalmology in 2015 and she became the Monday morning Volun Receptionist! Lauren O'Neill has volunteered since January of Lauren has mostly served as an Volunteer but has also assisted with the Refreshment Carts.

2 Virginia Spalding joined Volunteer Services in November of 2013 as a baby hat knitte Tom Westlund began volunteering in the Day of Surgery Lounge in August of 2012 wh where he has served all of his time. Hospital News The Road Ahead: Financial Challenges On Tuesday, September 5, Dr. Robillard and Mr. Kates will discuss our financial challenges as an institution from noon to 1 p.m. in the East Room (Elevator D/F, Level 8). UI Health Care is not alone in the challenges we face as a health care provider. Please come and learn about the steps the enterprise is taking, and how each of us has a part to play in finding new ways to contain costs and enhance revenue. Questions can be submitted ahead of time to vpma@uiowa.edu, and questions are welcome at the forum. Renovated Pediatric Specialty Clinic The first half of our renovated Pediatric Specialty Clinic (PSC; Elevator I, Level 2) opened on Aug. 14. The second half of the remodeled space is anticipated to open in Please be aware that the new PSC entrance is located near the Level 2 connector bridge that links UI Stead Family Children s Hospital to University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. The PSC is now just steps away from the children s hospital. See photos of the new space through this link.

3 2017 Kid Captains Announced! Kid Captain is a partnership that began in 2009 between UI Stead Family Children's Hospital and the Iowa Hawkeyes to honor pediatric patients and celebrate their inspirational stories. Meet the 2017 Kid Captains through this link Flu Campaign The hospital's annual flu campaign begins September 25. We will be ing more information about this important mandatory compliance int he coming weeks. Volunteer adds flair to Radiation Oncology masks There is nothing fun about undergoing radiation treatment, especially for kids. But one University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics volunteer is using art to make the process just a little easier. Weiren Liu, also a medical student at UI Carver College of Medicine, decorates radiology masks for children and adults undergoing treatment. Weiren started as a UIHC Junior Volunteer in As a Palliative Care Volunteer, Weiren created coloring books for our inpatients,and a custom volunteer edition was distributed at the 2016 Celebration of Caring.

4 Patient & Family Stories From the Cancer Inpatient Unit: I had my first shift today. I got familiarized with the floor and got to spend the majority of the day with a patient. We got to walk the around the hospital and visit the children s hospital, which is an amazing place!" From Center for Digestive Disease: "Volunteering went by surprisingly fast today! I was in the copy room making some copies and one of the nurses walked by and saw me and said, "I'm so glad you're here! We have such amazing volunteers here!" That made me smile and even more excited to be here helping out!" From the Cardiology Unit: "Today I spoke with a very nice, but confused patient. They were delightful company and very energetic! It was great to be able to explain some things to them and help them to feel more comfortable about where they were and what was going on." From Palliative Care: "I had the opportunity to visit a very nice patient. I think this was the first patient that I got the opportunity to talk with for more than half an hour. She shared so many things, and at the end of the visit, she said something that made my day better: "Thanks for what you are doing". It was a great experience to make someone's day better just by talking for a few minutes. "

5 Getting to Know You The Volunteer Services Office team is a large group of individuals, all of whom have a significant role in supporting volunteers, staff, businesses, and patient and family programs. To help make introductions, each month a question will be posed to these full-time staff, hourly staff, and volunteers, as an opportunity for YOU to get to know US better.
