1 Inside this Issue Hot Topic New Member Thank You s Staff Focus: Business Operations Upcoming Events Event Round-Up Current SAC Committees Dear colleagues: The campus slows down in the summer, but the Staff Advisory Council has not! We have been meeting regularly and planning for AY , as well as having some fun (look for us in the Welcome Back video!). The university is going through a lot of changes (Whitaker School of Engineering becoming College of Engineering, OCI morphing into Undergraduate Studies, Steve Magiera our new Vice President for Administrative Services and SAC liaison) but with change comes new opportunities. We will continue to use the communication tree structure to stay in touch with you regularly and we are taking special care to keep the SAC website up-to-date. Please talk to, , or call any member of SAC if you have something in particular on your mind. I hope to see you at a SAC meeting, as a volunteer on a SAC committee, or at an event! Neela Chevli SAC President Last year, SAC asked for everyone to submit one or two items that they would like to see SAC work on for the upcoming year. After collecting data, the most commonly requested item was for SAC to investigate the possibility of getting Spring Break off. After a full year of research, SAC presented its findings to the administration. Although the suggestions of both the full week off or a portion of the week was not approved, administration has stated that SAC President s Forum Hot Topic they are open to other ideas for things that staff might be interested in having take place during Spring Break. After much thought, SAC will have Carole Kaptur from HR at our next meeting to discuss the possibility of having a staff mini-conference or other staff development workshops during Spring Break. Please join us at our next SAC meeting (August 15, 11a-12p) to provide your input and creativity.
2 The annual staff assembly was held on May 2, 2011 in the Student Union Ballroom. During this assembly, 19 candidates from across campus were given the opportunity to speak to their peers and explain why they wanted to join the Staff Advisory Council. Outstanding prizes were raffled off to the staff members in attendance. Although only 12 positions were available, we appreciate all those who were willing to run for election. Congratulations to the following 14 people who were elected. SAC appreciates your support and looks forward to working for you! Following are their words of appreciation: Neela Chevli SAC is nothing without you, the staff. I will do my very best to represent you clearly and honestly. Waner Del Rosario I would like to sincerely thank the staff community at FGCU for their belief that I will serve them to the best of my ability. If you see me around campus and have an idea, don t hesitate to stop me and mention it. Once again, Thank you! Susan Fohs promises to be full of new opportunities for your Staff Advisory Council to do great things on your behalf. Thank you so much for your vote of confidence in my ability to serve your interests and work with you once again to make sure your voice is heard. I am up for the challenge and look forward to representing you this year. Tia Freiburger Thank you for re-electing me to another two year term on SAC. This year promises to be full of new ventures for SAC and I am excited to be a part of them. Have a great semester and please take advantage of all SAC has to offer.
3 Andrea Henry Thank you for the opportunity given me to serve you on the Staff Advisory Council. I take great pride in representing you. Liz Loredo I look forward to the various opportunities to impact change positively for FGCU staff. I am excited to work with SAC members to create relationships across campus and accomplishing the goals initiated by our campus community. Kim Hobart I am greatly appreciative to be re-elected to SAC for another two year term. This is a fantastic opportunity to continue providing staff a voice. Please remember that staff members are able to make comments or ask questions via the anonymous comment page on the SAC webpage, in comment boxes located throughout the campus or by contacting any SAC member. Elspeth McCulloch Thank you for allowing me to serve as your representative on SAC. I am most grateful and look forward to serving you and to building upon the strength of a vibrant Staff Advisory Committee. If you have ideas or suggestions, I am eager to hear them. Kathy McElroy Just wanted to say a big Thank you to all the voters that had the confidence in me to serve for two more years on SAC. I promise to make you all proud.
4 CJ McFarlane I would like to thank everyone for giving me this opportunity to help represent the staff during my time on SAC. I have been at FGCU since 1999 and I have been fortunate to be a part of it's growth. I now have a chance to help enhance the environment for those now and in the future and for that I thank you all. Amber Pacheco Many thanks to all of those that voted for me! I appreciate your support and I am excited to represent FGCU staff members during my two year term. I welcome your feedback regarding ways that SAC can help improve your experience at the University, so feel free to reach out to me anytime. I look forward to working with you! 5 Business Operations (From left): KJ Moses, Loren Prive, April Lattanzi, Carl Steinberg, About Business Operations: Business Operations is responsible for the Eagle ID card office, Eagle Dining services, the FGCU Bookstore, snack and beverage vending, duplicating services, and the Blackboard Transaction system which drives the use of Eagle Dollars on campus. Business Operations supports all students, faculty and staff that utilize any of these services on a daily basis Business Operations Staff Loren Privé: As Director of Business Operations, I oversee all of the functions listed above. I enjoy being a part of the team that brings new services to campus and I am excited to see the continued expansion over the next decade. April Lattanzi: I have worked for the same department since I started here in December 2002, Auxiliary Services, which is now known as Business Operations. I am currently the Office Manager of the Eagle ID Card Office. My favorite thing about my job is meeting all the new students, faculty and staff. Go Eagles!! K.J. Moses: My wife, Lindsey, and I moved to Estero in 2004 after we both graduated from the University of Miami, and are now parents to two young girls, Gia, 3 years, and Jenna, 3 months. Within the department, I manage the Eagle Dining services contract, the Blackboard card system, and Eagle Dollar accounts. I find my job rewarding because I have the opportunity to have a tangible, high-profile impact on the campus population, and landscape. Carl Steinberg: As a contract manager, I am responsible for the Bookstore contract, the IKON copier contract, and the vending contract. I also supervise the ID card office. Each of these areas has been exciting to watch grow as we expand the bookstore, add copiers to each new building, welcome new faculty, staff and students with their new IDs, and enhance vending through the addition of things like the ice cream machines.
