2 SMILE LINE President s Message Fall 2011 Greetings from your fellow professionals of the Lancaster Lebanon York Dental Hygienists Association! As hygienists, we share a common character trait, our ability to show empathy. When I look up empathy, the thesaurus mentions the words understanding, compassion and sympathy. We care about our patients and we care about each other. That is what this organization is all about. Our common bond brings us together to learn, work, help our communities, help each other, and help our profession grow and continue to be a voice of prevention of oral and other diseases. I hope this year we can gather together to share our professional experiences and expertise. Share your knowledge and talents! You all have something to contribute! Please read through our calendar of events for the year and I look forward to seeing you at this year s meetings. I m sure you are also aware that our component is hosting the PDHA Keystone Conference in November at the new convention center in downtown Lancaster. Come and check it out! Karen Sherwood, RDH Dental Hygiene Oath In my practice as a dental hygienist, I affirm my personal and professional commitment to improve the oral health of the public, to advance the art and science of dental hygiene, and to promote high standards of quality care. I pledge continually to improve my professional knowledge and skills, to render a full measure of service to each patient entrusted in my care, and to uphold the highest standards of professional competence and the personal conduct in the interests of the dental hygiene profession and the public it serves.

(Since medical and dental CEUs are evaluated differently, for you it means 2 credits with a live speaker; the course can be didactic or may involve clinical. Hands-on is NOT a requirement.) The DEP will be verifying these hours when the radiation check is done on office x-ray equipment (varies for every office, occurs once every four years). The owner of the equipment is liable to the DEP for ALL persons using radiation equipment. This requirement is NOT required by the State Board of Dentistry and can not affect your professional license, however, the content may be used toward your 20 CEUs.
