1 September/October 2015 Detroit #1 Kiwanis PRESIDENT S CORNER Club Officers Marian O Higgins President Eric Sabree Immediate Past President Sincerely, Dertroit Kiwanis #1 Board of Directors I would like to start with a sincere thank you to all our club members for all the work that we do. Any organization succeeds by the joint effort made by the team of members that follow a common goal and work together using their combined strengths to achieve great things. This year, Kiwanis International and the Michigan District are following the I Plan to promote membership growth, meaningful service, branding of Kiwanis and encourage, promote, support and have collaboration of our Service Leadership Programs (SLPs). My goals for our club are to continue these goals for Detroit No Membership: to increase membership growth by attracting members that understand our mission for doing what is best for children and their families. 2. To provide more service in our community and extend the service to incorporate varied opportunities to our members. 3. For all of us to work toward branding our club by wearing our Kiwanis wear talking about our club and Kiwanis wherever we go and share our own personal stories of why Kiwanis is important to us and why we joined Detroit No To work closer with our SLP's and do more service with them. We are fortunate to have WSU Circle K, Aktion Club, Key Club and working towards a K-Kids. 2 Kiwanis extended family allows more bonding and passion for Kiwanis and more meaningful service and awareness in our immediate Kiwanis community. I look forward to working and serving with all of our members. We all bring special talents to our club and by working, sharing and having fun together, we all can accomplish great things this year in our Detroit Kiwanis No. 1 family. As always, please contact Lucas to confirm your attendance so he can give the DAC an accurate head count: lucas@hacketbrass.com. Also, let Lucas know if you require a vegetarian meal, otherwise, we will assume you will be satisfied with what the DAC will be serving for lunch that day. We will always save a seat for you! 6 CLUB RETREAT Our club convened what has become an annual tradtion with a retreat attended by board members and other interested individuals. Joe Jr was our host and he provided wonderful food and look at the view! Although enjoyable, neither distracted us from our mission of setting out goals, strategies and outcomes. More to come as committee chairs begin to reach out to club members for help. 8 Not pictured - Beverly, Marian and Kris talking about membership (probably because Kris was too busy taking notes to take a photo!). books for kids Over the weekend of October 2 3, TaTa Motors partnered with books for kids and First Books to unpack hundreds of books, sort them and then distribute to schools. Members from our club who volunteered included: Sheila Connelly, Marian O Higgins, Joe Lentine, Jr., Eric Sabree, Barbara Jean Johnson, Mike Webb and Jeanette Harris. Out of boxes and into the hands of kids Joe, Mike, Marian, Barbara Jean and Eric Members for the newly formed Young Professionals came to help DIVISIONAL PICNIC Volunteers helping out Thanks to all the hard work spearheaded by Marian and Marcia, over 70 Kiwanians, friends and family came to Belle Isle on September 12 th for our first Divisional One Picnic. Following a short interclub meeting, everyone dug into the good food and

9 enjoyed each other s company. Detroit # 1 members who attended included Eric, Aliyiah and Badriyyah Sabree, Marian O Higgins, Thom Mann, Jeanette Harris and Marcia Ford.

10 YOUNG PROFESSIONALS CHARTER NIGHT Metro Detroit Young Professionals Kiwanis held their charter night on October 1. Our club are cosponsors along with Livonia Early Risers. Congratulations to Katy and Kelly and all the Young Professionals. You are a special part of Kiwanis and we welcome you to our family. Thank you for sharing your special night with us. AKTION CLUB The Aktion Club convention was held the weekend of September at the YMCA Camp in Jackson, MI. Two members of the Detroit Helping-Out Aktion club, Lindell and Markia, attended and had a great time. Their poster won second place in the Poster completion! Even though Detroit #1 met its Eliminate Goal to be a model club, there is still work to do (to quote former Governor, Stan Nelson). Governor Linda Lawther is asking her Lt. Governors to work with all clubs in the District to determine how the district can raise more money. The Michigan District goal is $2.6 million; to date Michigan has raised $1.3 million so we are only half-way there.

11 Lynn Kleiman recently donated her winnings to Eliminate (thanks Lynn!). I am continuing to talk to clubs and asking for commitments to Eliminate. Hard to accept that babies die because they were born in the wrong side of the globe. The vaccine for tetanus has been available since the 1930s. I still have a few women in Kiwanis pins which I purchased with my own money from a club in Germany. They are $5. There are also a few Kiwanis #1 ornaments celebrating our 100 years still available. me at jharris48@yahoo.com if you are interested in either or both items. Jeanette OUT OF THE COUNTRY INTERCLUB Marian Higgins,, Eric Sabree, Marcia Ford and Jeanette Harris attended the Kiwanis Celebration of the presidency of Dr. Button hosted by the Kiwanis Clubs of Chatham and Ridgetown, Ontario. INTERCLUBS In addition to the interclub to Canada, our members attended the New Center Installation (Sheila, Kimme, Marian and Vernita) in addition to Cosmopolitan s monthly meeting. Members of Lac St. Claire were there too having their own interclub. Nice to meet fellow Kiwanians out and about. Lucas is the Interclub Chair for the upcoming year so look for as i his invitations to more interclubs we want to repeat our Round Robin of last year where we went to at least one interclub in Division 1.

12 Interclub at Cosmo UPCOMING EVENTS 101 st BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION IN DETROIT The birthday committee is busily planning this event to be held January 23 rd at the Detroit Yacht Club. See the last two pages of the newsletter for the registration form. We will be honoring Sue Petrisin, a Michigander and the first president of any major service organization in the world, bar none! This year, there is no early nor late registration fee. However, the ticket deadline is January 16 th and if we meet capacity before then, there will be no more available tickets. So buy early and we hope to see you there! 101 st INTERNATIONAL CONVENTION See you in Toronto! Thousands of Kiwanians and their guests celebrated 100 years of Kiwanis this past June in Indianapolis. In Toronto, we ll celebrate a centennial again from June Join us for the 100th anniversary of Kiwanis in Canada (and the 101 st international convention). We re already planning a big celebration. Marian is wearing three Mountie hats says her horse is waiting for her in Toronto!
