5 Who got to be the 50s girl and wear a red poodle skirt, Peter Pan collared white blouse and skip through the time machine? Why Detroit No.1's own Jeanette Harris. Why? Probably because she is a 50s girl and lived through the news items that she reeled off: music by Chuck Berry, Buddy Holly and Elvis Presley, Queen Elizabeth's coronation on television and independence by all those "B" nations that she read slowly on the teleprompter so as not to mess up. Jeanette with Marge Pollack Ballheim near the Eliminate Maternal Neonatal Tetanus Booth Did she get a swell head from her five minutes of fame? Don't think so. She was just proud to represent Detroit No.1 and the Michigan District. Pat Hampton with Kathy Le, International Circle K President Key Leader Camp Pat with metro Detroit Kiwanians It is never too soon to start planning for next year s camp to be held April at Camp FaHoLo. The camp is fun-packed while focusing on building leadership skills for youth ages 14 to 18 years. For the past several years, our club has provided scholarships so four students can attend. We hope to continue that tradition in 2016.
6 DETROIT #1 OUT AND ABOUT Our club was in not one, but TWO Independence Day parades. On July 3 rd, members walked in the The Oak Park Independence Day parade (an annual tradition). This was a great opportunity to sport the Kiwanis Banner. Participants were: Jeanette Harris Thom Mann Eric Sabree Felicia Tyler Karen Walker Beverly Wiggins (who helps organize the event) Karen and Cash were a parade favorite Karen brought three friends, including a 3 month old baby! Jeanette was accompanied by her son, Geoffrey Garrett.
7 AKTION CLUB NEWS On Friday, August 28 th, the Detroit Helping-Out Aktion Club will perform a dance routine at 3:50 in the afternoon following the General Session at the Michigan District Conveniton. The selection is choreographed and directed by Detroit #1 member, Chris King. Be there to support our Aktion Club and prepare to be dazzled and proud! That s Marian peeking over Eric s shoulder The parade on July 4 th was held in Whitmore Lake and was hosted by the local Kiwanis club. Eric and Marian rode on the 100 th anniversary float such an honor as our club and the 100 th birthday were the parade theme.
8 WE CAME.. WE CELEBRATED NOW WHAT? The 100 th Birthday Celebration continues We had a wonderful 100 th Birthday Party. The Convention was great. We were so proud to see Sue Petrisin become the Kiwanis President-Elect. But, she has challenged clubs to save a baby a day or whatever you can afford. Detroit #1 is a Model Club. We are a few thousand from goal, but wouldn t it be great if we received a 100% Participation Patch? Wouldn t it be great if every member signed up to save one child s life? It only takes $1.80. That s change that can be found in couch cushions. Or sacrifice one meal out at lunchtime to save a child s life. We joined Kiwanis because of the service opportunities. Please help serve the poorest of the poor. There, but for the grace of God, you and/or your children or grandchildren could be living in an area where tetanus still kills one baby every 12 minutes. jharris48@yahoo.com or call and ask how YOU can save a life. Kiwanis is more, much more than parties!!!!!
