1 January 2016 Detroit #1 Kiwanis PRESIDENT S CORNER Club Officers Marian O Higgins President Eric Sabree Immediate Past President Sincerely, Dertroit What Kiwanis a wonderful #1 Board way to of begin Directors our 101 st year of Kiwanis celebrating with many Kiwanians from over 30 clubs from Michigan, Ohio and our neighboring country Canada and 46 members, family and friends of our own n club. This is the cutting edge of new times for us to build on our International, State and Club s Goals of working towards thei plan: 1. Building membership. Let us all look for new members that share our common goal of being a united family with our Kiwanis goal of working to improve the lives of children and their families. 2. Meaningful Service: We had many members doing service at Dencap on Martin Luther Day and January 23 rd. Our International President Sue Petrisin, found some of our members with 57 children putting Kiwanis stickers on books. This was a great representation of our signature project. On Saturday, March 5 th, you can help package food for Kids Against Hunger at the Grosse Pointe Memorial Church. See Kris for details. Another opportunity helping the Children s Miracle Network (National I HOP DAY), at the IHOP on Jefferson (also an opportunity to Interclub with New Center. 2 And help the Michigan District in saving shoes to raise money for Eliminate. More information will be at our February meeting. 3. Image: PLEASE wear your Kiwanis clothes, pins, use you Kiwanis business cards (you can get free ones from me at our meetings), and use your elevator one minute speech to share your Kiwanis message with everyone you meet. 4. Invest your time in developing and demonstrating your commitment to Kiwanis. Kelsey sharing ways we could collaborate with their organization Remember: Detroit Kiwanis No 1 Club, as all Kiwanis clubs, commitment is to help others. It is imperative to put others first, for serving others means doing what is best for them not yourself and to give and share your time freely along with fellow Kiwanians to give back to our community. Marian CLUB MEETINGS We only had one club meeting in January as it is our tradition to encourage members to attend the annual birthday party event later in the month. On January 5 th, our speakers were Holly Gorecki and Kelsey Hubbell from Detroit s Children s Center. They outlined some of the programs and it was quite interesting to hear about their birthday parties for children who have never had one and their family game nights. As always, please contact Lucas to confirm your attendance so he can give the DAC an accurate head count: lucas@hacketbrass.com CAMPERSHIP SCHOLARSHIPS Kris has sent out a reminder about our campership scholarship program. Funded by the Drevant Fund managed by the Detroit #1 Foundation, these are monies given to programs (not indiviudals). If you know of a worthy summer program, be sure to have them apply. The application form is at the end of the newsletter.

3 JANUARY BIRTHDAYS Congratulations to our members with birthdays in January! his knees were dirtier, implying he was working harder! Kiwanis club members were there along with kids and parents from Cesar Chavez school. Marcia Ford Jerry Jones Karen Walker Lucas Wright ELIMINATE SHOE DRIVE In order to continue the great work with the Eliminate Project, the Michigan Kiwanis District is working with Funds2Orgs to collect new, used and gently worn shoes in order to meet our goal to raise $1.4 million from February 2016 through January Shoes that are collected are sent overseas where individuals learn how to refurbish them for future wear. Marian will be providing more information as it becomes available. Five pairs of shoes save a baby so start saving your used shoes! NEW THOUGHTS ON INTERCLUBS How many members should be required for an Interclub? It has been brought up at the Michigan District level that perhaps the attendance of two members attending an Interclub be the new standard as opposed to four. Think about it and let Marian know your thoughts and she will pass them on to Lt. Governor Heidi McInnes. books for kids Sue Petrisin came to the warehouse to help sticker book for our club s signature project. She told us how she was on her knees and a little boy told her INTERNATIONAL ONE DAY On Saturday, April 2 nd, our club will be joining clubs around the world for a day of service. We will be working with the Salvation Army bread truck that distributes sandwiches and other materials to the homeless throughout Detroit. Look for more details later about how to sign up. Our Detroit #1 Foundation contributes funds to support this project.

4 KIDS AGAINST HUNGER The Grosse Pointe Memorial church is planning on packaging 75,000 meals on Saturday, March 5 th. They need 450 volunteers to help. The shifts are 10 AM noon, Noon 2 PM and 2 PM 4 PM. A few of your fellow club members are already signed up for the noon 2 PM shift. Contact Kris at Kristine.miranne@att.net if interested and she will add you to the sign-in list. For whichever shift you would like. More details re: address and parking will be sent closer to the date. SPRING DIVISIONAL Save April 15 th from 11 AM to 3 PM for our upcoming spring divisional (and of course your taxes will be done so you can attend ). Where? DeCarlo's in Warren. Cost will be $25.00 with more details to follow. INTERNATIONAL CONVENTION IN TORONTO Registration is now open. You can find all of the information on the District website at: Please note the following deadlines: 4/15/16 - $300 per person 4/16/16 5/13/16 $350 per person After 5/14/16 (onsite only) $400 per person The Michigan District is assigned to The Fairmont Royal York hotel. The District Caucus will be held there as well. AND NOW THE PARTY We had decent weather (not like the snow we have had in the past) and it was a lovely setting for the 101 st birthday party celebration. There were 161 Kiwanis members and guests representing 33 clubs including Toledo, OH and Ontario Canada. We also welcomed the Metro Detroit Young Professionals club for the first time a club we co-sponsored. We were delighted to welcome Sue Petrisin, our international president. During her comments to the attendees, Sue reminded us that service at the core of Kiwanis and that we need to be mindful in the next year how we do serve the children of the world. In addition, there is ongoing outreach to grow our clubs, not only in number of clubs but in members within the ones we have. As always, there was laughter and hugs as members renewed acquaintances. Thanks to the birthday party committee: Vernita Beverly, Sheila Connolly, Marcia Ford and Marian O Higgins. Thanks also to Darlene and Chuck who handled the ticket sales and registration. Darlene put together the scarecrow with 101 lottery tickets (dressed in green to honor Sue and MSU!). Our own Jerry Jones won it hope she was lucky! There was a Chinese auction with prizes raffled off along with a wagon of cheer with bottle of what you might expect. Funds for these go to support the books for kids project. Kris wants to honor Jim Heymes as well. For many years, he called out the roster of the clubs. She followed the way he used to do it big shoes to follow but she got through it! Jim, you were missed. Marian closed the meeting around 8:30 and then the music and dancing began. So all in all, another successful event enjoyed by those who attended. Just a few photos from the party. Application Process All applications are to be submitted electronically. February 26, 2016 at 5 PM is the deadline for submitting applications. This is a two-step review process. In early March, the Detroit Kiwanis club board of directors will review all proposals. They will submit their recommendations to the Detroit Kiwanis Foundation Board who will make the final determination in April. By mid-may, applicants will be notified of the decision to fund or not and at what level.
