1 Curriculum Vitae Frank Y. K. Lee BA (Cantab), MB BChir (Cantab), MA (Cantab), FRCS (Eng), FRCS (Urol) Consultant Urological Surgeon & Honorary Senior Lecturer St George s Hospital and Medical School GMC Registration GMC Specialist Registry in Urology EDUCATION
2 St. Paul s Co-Educational College, Hong Kong Rugby School, England Cambridge University, England AWARDS AND PRIZES Sir Robert Kotewall Prize 1984 Peter Walker Prize 1986 Short Paper Prize, Urology Section, Royal Society of Medicine 2001 British Urological Foundation / Bayer / Pharmacia Scholarship 2001 LANGUAGES SPOKEN SUB-SPECIALTY INTERESTS English Cantonese Mandarin (Putonghua) Female and Reconstructive Urology Neuro-Urology Adolescent Urology Iatrogenic Injury General Urology Benign prostate and kidney diseases Testicular / Scrotal problems Men s health Health screening Female Urology I provide a dedicated service to male and female patients suffering from urinary incontinence, including surgical treatment using Botulinum toxin, urethral bulking agent, tension-free vaginal tape and colposuspension. Furthermore, I look after a large number of patients suffering from an Overactive Bladder who are troubled by the sensation of urgency. Reconstructive Urology This involves the restoration of function and anatomy to the problematic urinary tract. For example, surgery can be performed to enlarge a small and unsafe bladder using segments of bowel. An artificial cuff and reservoir can be implanted to achieve continence. For those who are chair- or bed-bound, concealed access can be constructed from the skin on the abdomen to the bowel or bladder for ease of evacuation. My scope of practice also includes treating patients who have suffered from iatrogenic injury (see below). Neuro-Urology and Adolescent Urology I provide a comprehensive Neuropathic Bladder service for patients with urinary and bladder problems due to neurological causes, e.g. spina bifida, spinal cord injury, bladder extrophy, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson s disease and stroke. I collaborated closely with my Paediatric Urological colleagues at St George s and Chelsea and Westminster Hospitals. I continue the care of their patients when they have reached adolescent or adulthood. Iatrogenic injury 2
3 This is unintentional injury occurring as a result of medical intervention. In my practice, I treat patients who have developed injury to the urinary bladder, ureter (the tube which drains urine from the kidney to the bladder) and urethra (the tube which allows the bladder to empty the urine); in addition to fistula (abnormal communication between two organs, e.g. the bladder and the vagina) as a result of urological, obstetric or gynaecological complications. General Urology I also provide regular care to patients with prostate, kidney, scrotal, testicular and fertility problems. Furthermore, I am keen to promote Men s health and health screening. BIOGRAPHY I completed my A-Level education in Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Mathematics at Rugby School, England. I achieved Grade A in all subjects and was awarded the Peter Walker Prize. I won a place to read Medicine at the University of Cambridge in I obtained my BA (Hons) degree in Medical Sciences (2:1) in 1989 and the following qualifications: MB BChir (Cantab) 1991, MA (Cantab) 1991, and FRCS (Eng) I completed my Basic Surgical Training in Cambridge. I received my specialist training in Urology and Urological Surgery in London between 1997 and During this period, I undertook research on the role of urinary sodium in the sensation of urgency in patients with an Overactive Bladder. I was awarded a British Urological Foundation Scholarship and the Short Paper Prize from the Urology Section of the Royal Society of Medicine. I obtained my specialist qualification in Urology and Urological Surgery, FRCS (Urol), in I continued my sub-specialty training at the Institute of Urology in London and gained entry to the Specialist Registry (Urology) of the General Medical Council in In the same year, I was appointed as a Consultant Urological Surgeon to St. George s Hospital and as an Honorary Senior Lecturer to St George s Hospital Medical School at the. I sit on the Board of Surgical Education and participate actively in the teaching of both underand post-graduates. I have been invited to speak in local, national (British Association of Urological Association) and international (International Urogynecological Association) meetings.
