Department of Oceanography Xiamen University Xiamen China ; 2. College of Life Science Xiamen University Xiamen China) Abstract : The male Scylla serrata individuals were employed with body weight g and body length mm. The observation was conducted under Olympus B H22 microscope. The result s show t hat a pair of an2 drogenic glands attach to t he subterminal portion of t he ejaculatory duct s and t heir develop mental process can be divided into four stages : at Stage the androgenic glands are short and the glandular cells are of small amounts; at Stage the glands distinctively take on a cord - figure ; at Stage the volume of the glands reaches its peak with hyperplasia in some portion ; at Stage the glands no longer grow and degenerate rapid2 ly. There are two types of glandular cells : Type A which has a round nucleus less in heterochromatin and the cytoplasm stained lightly and Type B which has flat nucleus rich in heterochromatin t he cytoplasm stained darkly or vanished. During the development of the androgenic gland the quantity of Type A cells and Type B cells and their ratio in number have some change. After Type A cells perform the secretion function they exist as the form of Type B cells. At the same development stage of andrgenic gland the ratio of Type B cells to Type A cells in number increases significantly which implies that this ratio reflects the secretion activity of the andro2 genic gland. It can be concluded that androgenic gland correlates closely with the mature degree of the testis. Key words : Scylla serrata ; androgenic gland ; development ; histology Corresponding author : L I Shao2jing.
