1 WONDERING: DUE FRIDAY 1/15/16 members: Brandon Ricafort and Joshua Parayno Date: January 13, 2016 Questions We wonder what would happen if nitrogen touches your skin We wonder why nitrogen is inside our body. We wonder how nitrogen is related to acid rain. We wonder how nitrogen is a gas when it looks like a liquid. We wonder what would happen if nitrogen wasn't in the Earth Why we want to explore these wonderings We want to explore these wonderings about nitrogen because we want to know more about nitrogen and other elements. We want to gain more knowledge about our world.

2 Due Friday, January 15th RESEARCH Element Name: Periodic Square: atomic number, atomic mass, symbol. Nitrogen Element group and period Nitrogen is in Group 15 Period 2 Physical and chemical properties The atomic number of nitrogen is 7, the atomic mass is u ± u, and the symbol is N Natural State The natural state is gas. Drawings I can use. Nitrogen is colorless, odorless, and tasteless. It is a gas with a density of grams per liter. Nitrogen is very inactive. It cannot combine with most of the other elements. Common uses for the element Nitrogen can be used to freeze food. Nitrogen can also be used for fertilizers, nitric acid, nylon, dyes and explosives. Naturally Occurring or Man made Nitrogen is naturally occurring. Nitrogen is not man made because nitrogen is inside of our bodies and nitrogen is an element and is found naturally in the air, it forms 80% of the air. Year Discovered and by who Nitrogen was discovered in 1772 Daniel Rutherford. Model of the Element Protons, Neutrons, and Electrons.

3 CONCLUSIONS We wonder what would happen if nitrogen touches your skin If liquid nitrogen touches your skin, the nitrogen would boil and then your finger would freeze solid. You d also feel cold. It is very dangerous and no one should try it. We wonder why nitrogen is inside our body. Nitrogen is inside of our bodies because it is in amino acids. Amino acids make up proteins in your hair, muscles, skin, and other important parts Reflection Use your built-in camera and imovie to record a team reflection for this activity. Possible topics include: What surprised you? What are some of the interesting facts you learned from your research? How well did your team work together? What did you learn about your topic? What new technology skills did you learn? What would change if you could do this again? based on your observations what new wonderings do you have How did your curiosity lead your investigation? What I was Saying: I got surprised when we first started. Josh and I got Nitrogen as an element. We were hoping to get either this element, oxygen, or helium. It was incredible that we got the element we wanted. Interesting facts were that nitrogen was inside our bodies, I never knew it helped with important parts. I also didn t know it can make explosives. We learned lots of good facts on this topic, including an understanding of the periodic table. In technology, I really didn't learn anything new except on how to change our folder icons. I f I could do this again, I would put more thought into my wonderings and make the shirt a little better. Now I would ask myself, How is Nitrogen like Carbon? or Can Nitrogen become a solid? My curiosity helped me on google. Wondering ideas on the internet made me want to come up with a wondering like that. This project was a good one. We wonder how nitrogen is related to acid rain. Nitrogen is related to acid rain because acid rain is caused by sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides. Altogether they go into the atmosphere and mix with other chemicals to make an acidic mix which is acid rain. Script My partner who is Joshua, is modeling a shirt We wonder how nitrogen is a gas when it looks like a liquid. Nitrogen is a gas because nitrogen boils all the heat in the item and boils which is a gas. Nitrogen also changes into a liquid at a negative temperature. that has informative information about nitrogen. Nitrogen is an element of the periodic table, the atomic number is 7, the atomic mass is ± , and the symbol is N. It is in group 15, period 2. The natural state of nitrogen is gas We wonder what would happen if nitrogen wasn't in the Earth We would not survive because nitrogen makes up 80% of the air. Also, nitrogen is inside of our bodies to function. It helps with important parts. even though it looks like a liquid. Nitrogen could freeze food, and can be used for fertilizers, nitric acid, nylon, dyes and explosives. It was discovered in 1772, and has 7 protons, 7 neutrons, and 7 electrons. In England Mr Daniel Rutherford was the first to discover this element. Nitrogen is naturally occurring. Nitrogen is not man made because nitrogen is inside of our bodies and nitrogen is an element and is found naturally in the air, it forms 80% of the air. Nitrogen is colorless, odorless, and tasteless. It is a gas with a density of grams per liter. Nitrogen is very inactive. It cannot combine with most of the other elements. Nitrogen is a nonmetal. Nitrogen s melting point is C and it s boiling point is C. The density is g/l. It can can be found around the world because it helps make the air and the atmosphere.

4 Due Tuesday, January 19th DESIGN OF OUR ATTIRE Procedures: What is our plan to complete this project. 1. First sketch the shirt. 2. Buy the materials. 3. Bring the shirt with the materials 4. Fourth, design the shirt 5. Last, showcase the shirt Materials Needed White shirt Markers Our research nitrogen pictures (not printed) Buttons or beads Visual Representation
