5 Function Surge arrestors protect electrical equipment against overvoltage. Overvoltage may be caused by switching, ground or short circuits and atmospheric discharge. In the case of overvoltage, the non-linear resistance drops so that the voltage surge is restricted. Secondary currents are suppressed by the quickly increasing resistance. The metal-oxide varistor has a very high resistance. It responds quickly and does not require an arching gap.
