3 The Flavanoplus powder blends are ideal to create the next generation oral hygiene in form of toothpastes, chewing tablets or sweeteners with only natural powerful ingredients that exist for centuries fill up with anti-oxidants, anti-inflammatory polyphenols that included Cranberry proanthocyanidins who prevent gun diseases and prevent urinary infections, Cocoa Flavanols also known to help the Cardio - vascular system and memory by regenerating elasticity of arteries and improving the fluidity of the blood which help to a better oxygenation of all organs including the brain. While more than 80% of the population aged 60 years and higher suffer from receding gums combined to the slow loss of memory Studies are widening several University confirming that Cranberry extracts protect against the oral disease, called periodontitis combining more than 266 sharp scientific studies converge to the facts that the flavanols in cocoa have beneficial effects for the cardio - vascular system by improving the elasticity of arteries and increasing the fluidity of the blood flow which helps to boost the memory capacity of the brain with the additional oxygen supply. Fact is that with age, memory declines in all human beings. All of these studies also agreed also that daily consumption of flavonoids helps and is required to maintain their beneficial effects. Researchers at Laval University in Quebec City studied the positive impact from the cranberry polyphenols by subjecting cells oral in vitro to attack some of the 500 species of bacteria that form plaque. The addition of cranberry extracts show that protection has reached in several cases 100%. (Dr. Daniel Grenier Université Laval 2011) Cranberry polyphenols inhibit the growth of pathogenic bacteria and reduce inflammation. Exploring the properties of cranberries on oral health as part of his Ph.D., Charles Bodet in an article that appeared in the scientific journal "Critical Reviews in Food Science and Nutrition" concludes that the addition of toothpastes and mouthwashes fill up with Cranberry polyphenols would be a preventive treatment of the future against periodontitis and caries. What are the Flavanols? Flavanols belong to the family of Flavonoids, an amazing array of over 6,000 different natural substances found in plants. They are responsible of the plant colors that dazzle us with their brilliant shades of yellow, orange, and red. Classified as plant pigments since 1682, by 1884 flavonoids anthocyanins were considered protecting plants against bright lights. In 1938 an Hungarian scientist named Albert Szent- Gyorgyi use the term "vitamin P" to describe them. The chemistry of Flavonoids is complicated, and can be found many different chemical groups of substances. These groups include Flavonols, dihydroflavonols, flavones, isoflavones, flavanones, anthocyanin's and anthocyanin's. Well-known Flavonols included quercetin, rutin, and hesperidin, while well-known flavones included apigenin and luteolin. Flavonoids may also be named directly after the unique plant that contains them such cocoa Flavanols or Ginkgetin a Flavonoid from the ginkgo tree or tangeretin is a flavonoid from the tangerine. What is are the func ons of flavonoids? Protec on of cell structures Most flavonoids function in the human body as antioxidants. In this capacity, they help neutralize overly reactive oxygen containing molecules and prevent these overly reactive molecules from damaging parts of cells. In oriental medicine, plant flavonoids have been used for centuries in conjunction with their antioxidant, protective properties. Green tea, Scultellaria root, Cornus fruit, licorice, are examples of flavonoid-containing foods widely used in oriental medicine. While flavonoids may exert their cell structure protection through a variety of mechanisms, one of their potent effects may be through their ability to increase levels of glutathione, a powerful antioxidant, as suggested by various research studies.
4 COCOA FLAVANOLS The produc on of caries and consump on of chocolate are o en cited in the literature, with the intake of chocolate considered detrimental for tooth health. However, this nega ve effect is due to high concentra ons of compounds present in chocolate other than cocoa, such as sugar. Ferrazzano et al. were of the first to note the possible protec ve effect of cocoa on dental caries. Cocoa products contain inhibitors of the dextransucrase enzyme, which is responsible for the forma on of the plaque extracellular polysaccharides from sucrose. Moreover, phenolic substances may be responsible for the observed an caries effect of cocoa powder. Indeed, a water soluble extract, of cocoa powder was shown to significantly reduce caries scores in rats infected with Streptococcus sobrinus, a potent cariogenic α haemoly c streptococcus. Complementary studies have demonstrated that cocoa polyphenols inhibit the growth of S. sanguinis, but not that of S. mutans. Although S. mutans appears to be refractory to the growth inhibitory or lethal effects of the cocoa polyphenol pentamer in rou ne studies, the compound s ll managed to significantly inhibit acid produc on from sucrose. Indeed, a recent study reports on the use of the ground husk of cocoa beans, a by product of cocoa manufacture, to prepare a mouth rinse for children that was even more effec ve in decreasing plaque scores. Tomofuji et al. studied the poten al effects of a cocoa enriched diet (10% of the total food intake) on gingival oxida ve stress in a rat periodon s model and concluded that a diet rich in cocoa could diminish periodon s induced oxida ve stress, which, in turn, might suppress the progression of periodon s. In fact, they observed that rats with induced experimental periodon s which were fed a cocoa enriched diet did not show impairments in serum reac ve oxygen metabolite levels or gingival levels for 8 hydroxydeoxyguanosine, nor did they exhibit a reduced/oxidized glutathione ra o, as did the control group. They proposed further studies to defini vely establish the bacterial pathogens in the periodon um and the op mum dose of cocoa in the diet, along with new experiments to develop an inflammatory process equivalent to chronic periodon s in humans. Mao et al. suggested that the consump on of some cocoas and chocolates could reduce the risk for dental caries and periodontal disease, jus fying their hypothesis on the basis of purified cocoa flavanol oligomers immunomodulatory effects on the in vitro produc on of cytokines IL 1, IL 2, IL 4, and IL 5. These authors established a biphasic type effect in which the larger (hexamer through decamer) Procyanidin frac ons showed more ac vity in regula ng cytokine produc on. In the case of IL 5, the smaller Procyanidin frac ons (monomer through trimer) can augment IL 5 secre on. This cytokine is implicated in the differen a on of B cells to IgA producing plasma cells. IgA is considered to be protec ve in periodontal diseases; therefore in this enhanced effect of certain cocoa oligomer frac ons could be therapeu c for periodontal disease. Phenols from Cocoa in Tooth Health SCIENTIFIC OPINION. 200 mg of cocoa flavanol daily Scientific Opinion on the substantiation of a health claim related to cocoa Flavanols and maintenance of normal endotheliumdependent vasodilation pursuant to Article 13(5) of Regulation (EC) No 1924/2006 Following an application from Barry Callebaut Belgium n.v, submitted pursuant to Article 13(5) of Regulation (EC) No 1924/2006 via the Competent Authority of Belgium, the Panel on Dietetic Products, Nutrition and Allergies (NDA) was asked to deliver an opinion on the scientific substantiation of a health claim related to cocoa Flavanols and maintenance of normal endotheliumdependent vasodilation. Cocoa Flavanols are sufficiently characterised. The claimed effect is help maintain endothelium-dependent vasodilation which contributes to healthy blood flow. The target population proposed by the applicant is the general healthy adult population. The Panel considers that maintenance of normal endothelium-dependent vasodilation is a beneficial physiological effect. In weighing the evidence, the Panel took into account that cocoa Flavanols consumed for 12 weeks have been shown to increase fasting ED-FMD significantly in the target population in one human intervention study, that in another study the effect was dose-dependent and occurred after one week of consumption, that the effect was supported by two additional studies, and that it was also observed in two out of three studies in patients under pharmacological treatment for coronary artery disease, although the mechanisms by which regular consumption of cocoa Flavanols may induce a sustained effect on fasting ED-FMD are unknown. The Panel concludes that a cause and effect relationship has been established between the consumption of cocoa Flavanols and maintenance of normal endothelium dependent vasodilation. The following wording reflects the scientific evidence: Cocoa Flavanols help maintain endothelium-dependent vasodilation, which contributes to normal blood flow. In order to obtain the claimed effect, 200 mg of cocoa Flavanols should be consumed daily. This amount could be provided by 2.5 g of high-flavanol cocoa powder in the context of a balanced diet. The target population is the general population. European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), Parma, Italy Sept 2013

17 MATCHA GREEN TEA FOR HEALTHY TEETH AND GUMS With origins da ng back over 4,000 years, green tea has long been a popular beverage in Asian culture, and is increasingly gaining popularity in the United States. And while ancient Chinese and Japanese medicine believed green tea consump on could cure disease and heal wounds, recent scien fic studies are beginning to establish the poten al health benefits of drinking green tea, especially in cardio vascular health, and cancer preven on. A recent study published in the Journal of Periodontology, the official publica on of the American Academy of Periodontology (AAP), uncovered yet another benefit of green tea consump on. Researchers found that rou ne intake of green tea may also help promote healthy teeth and gums. The study analyzed the periodontal health of 940 men, and found that those who regularly drank green tea had superior periodontal health than subjects that consumed less green tea. It has been long speculated that green tea possesses a host of health benefits, said study author Dr. Yoshihiro Shimazaki of Kyushu University in Fukuoka, Japan. And since many of us enjoy green tea on a regular basis, my colleagues and I were eager to inves gate the impact of green tea consump on on periodontal health, especially considering the escala ng emphasis on the connec on between periodontal health and overall health. Male par cipants aged 49 through 59 were examined on three indicators of periodontal disease: periodontal pocket depth (PD), clinical a achment loss (CAL) of gum ssue, and bleeding onprobing (BOP) of the gum ssue. Researchers observed that for every one cup of green tea consumed per day, there was a decrease in all three indicators, therefore signifying a lower instance of periodontal disease in those subjects who regularly drank green tea. Green tea s ability to help reduce symptoms of periodontal disease may be due to the presence of the an oxidant catechin. Previous research has demonstrated an oxidants ability to reduce inflamma on in the body, and the indicators of periodontal disease measured in this study, PD, CAL and BOP, suggest the existence of an inflammatory response to periodontal bacteria in the mouth. By interfering with the body s inflammatory response to periodontal bacteria, green tea may actually help promote periodontal health, and ward off further disease. Periodontal disease is a chronic inflammatory disease that affects the gums and bone suppor ng the teeth, and has been associated with the progression of other diseases such as cardiovascular disease and diabetes. Periodon sts believe that maintaining healthy gums is absolutely cri cal to maintaining a healthy body, says Dr. David Cochran, DDS, PhD, President of the AAP and Chair of the Department of Periodon cs at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. That is why it is so important to find simple ways to boost periodontal health, such as regularly drinking green tea something already known to possess certain health related benefits. The exceedingly high catechin (notably EGCG) content of Cranmatcha is what interes ng. These Catechins have an bacterial effects, and in essence they act as microscopic plaque scrubbers that can help prevent cavity forma on and periodontal disease. See more at: h p://blog.breakawaymatcha.com/why den sts love matcha/#sthash.uotbwovs.dpuf Matcha is Green Tea Concentrate 10 x If you read the newspaper or listen to the radio, you already know that green tea is touted as a good for you brew. However, one mug of matcha, which is green tea leaves ground into a powder, is equivalent to 10 cups of typical green tea brewed in bag-form. Why? Because with matcha, you are actually ingesting all the benefits of the fine-ground tea leaves instead of tossing them out with the bag.
18 Cran matcha Boosts Energy If you re seeking an energy kick without the jittery, short-lived stimulating effect of coffee or energy drinks, go the way of the ancient samurai and sip matcha. Or simply brush you teeth with Cran matcha. In this blend, the matcha contains natural caffeine from a nutrient called L-Theanine, a potent amino and glutamic acid, which revs energy without the stress-inducing side effects.. An Antioxidant Superpower: Long sipped in Japan for its antioxidant prowess (i.e., EGCg), matcha green tea is considered a super food and it takes some serious cred to earn that title. For instance, Cran matcha flavanols not only protects us against harmful UV radiation and a variety of other diseases and illnesses but only 1 gram of Matcha provides the highest antioxidant absorbency (or oxygen radical absorbance capacity) compared to any other food or beverage. Enhances Concentration & Relaxation Enhancing focus and energy while calming the nerves and promoting relaxation sounds a bit too good to be true. However, monks from the Japanese Zen Buddhist fold have long sipped matcha to enhance their meditative practices. The naturally occurring L-Theanine in ground green tea leaves increases alpha brain waves as well as the production of dopamine and serotonin for better focus and concentration. Strengthens Immunity Green tea alone is high in nutrients (i.e., vitamin C, vitamin A, iron, and potassium) many of which have antibiotic properties to promote overall health and immune function. However, 1g of matcha each day supersizes your immune response to help ward off multiple viruses, infections, and diseases everything from the common cold to helping fight cancer and HIV. Lowers Cholesterol A 2011 study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition credited matcha green tea with the ability to significantly reduce LDL (bad) cholesterol. No surprise, the study also found that participants who drink matcha regularly improved HDL (good) cholesterol levels. Eliminates Toxins Excess heavy metals and chemicals coursing around in our bodies have been linked to an array of physical, muscular, and neurological degenerative diseases. Luckily, matcha is high in chlorophyll, which not only lends a vibrant green color to the powder, but also helps the body eliminate these potentially harmful toxins.
