Extraction chromatographic methods commonly used in phytochemistry will be also introduced. In addition, basic knowledge on the categorization system of plants, nomenclature, taxonomy evaluation prior to pharmaceutical formulation will be covered. Course objectives: This course is aims to cover most of the plant constituents. Synthetic pathways of plant secondary metabolites will be explored to cover few medicinal plant constituents. 1. This course will provide the students with basic essential information about natural products by introducing the following topics:crude Drugs 2. Pharmacopoeial related drugs of biological origin. 3. Different methods of extraction analysis of natural products used in the pharmaceutical world. 4. Apply stard practices for preparation, storage, quality evaluation of herbal medicications dosage forms. 5. Be familiar with quality assurance quality control principles for phytopharmacutics. 6. Determine crude drug stability expected shelf-life of different herbal materials. Intended Learning Outcomes: Successful completion of the course should lead to the following outcomes: A. Knowledge understing:. Recall the general aspects for the sources of natural medicinal products its applications. A2. outline the different methods used for preparation, collection general examination of herbal medicines. A3. Classify the structures of natural products as primary or secondary metabolites. A4. Illustrate the anatomy structural features for the used parts of herbs plants in medicine: Leaves tops, barks, woods, inflorescences flowers, fruits, seeds, subterranean organs.. Explain the role of different metabolites in plants their pharmaceutical uses. 1

2 A6. Choose between different methods used for extraction, separation, isolation, identification chemical test (assays) used to study natural products. B. Subject specific skills:. List terminology used in phytochemistry.. List the major classes of phytochemicals their existence. B3. Diffrentiate between the chemical structure the functional group of phytochemicals. B4. Categorize plants active constitues into primary secondary metabolites.. Select examples of medicinal plants from the local market with their biological roles. B6. Compare different secondary metabolites with their biological roles. B7. Develop correlatation between secondary metabolites with their precursors. B8. Distiguish between the different chemical constituents in natural materials. B9. Analyse the biosynthetic pathway of different chemical classes in correlation with their chemistry. 0. Inspect the quality control regulations guidelines for herbal formulations as per international Stards Commerce Quality control of natural medicine products including evaluation of crude drugs as per WHO guidelines. Determine the uses of natural material based on their phytochemicals content.. Criticize the structures of varied phytochemicals with the basic metabolic pathways exists in specific group of plants.
