2 FRUCTO-OLIGASACCHARIDE (FOS) MANOSÉ» Fructooligosaccharide (FOS) is low calorie complex sugar and water soluble oligosaccharide. It is a prebiotic which can be completely digested in human body.» FOS can stimulate the growth of beneficial intestinal microflora such as Lactobacillus spp. and Bifidobacteria spp., reduce constipation, reduce the risk of colon cancer, immunostimulation in intestinal tract, improved function and health of intestinal tract.» FOS compose of glucose (G) and fructose (F) molecules linked by DP (degree of polymerization) at 2-9 (DP is the number of glucose and fructose molecules). 2

8 Sulforhodamine B (SRB) colorimetry assay FOS extracts from radish, red onion and grains showed growth stimulated on human skin fibroblast at 1.10, 1.02 and 1.17 folds of vitamin C, respectively. 8

10 2.Acute toxicity study in animal Organ Control FOS 2,000 µg/kg FOS 5,000 µg/kg Liver Kidney s FOS extract from grains showed no changes of histopathology of liver, kidneys and spleen of animals including biochemistry parameters such as creatinine, AST, ALT and total bilirubin. 12 Efficacy and satisfaction studies in volunteers Efficacy and satisfaction in averaged 35 years volunteers for 6 weeks showed that dietary supplement containing FOS extract gave no side effects, no change in the bodyweight of volunteer and relieved in digestive and intestinal disturbances. 12 Figure 12 Investigation of efficacy and satisfaction in volunteer

13 Conclusion The FOS extract from grains gave high anti-oxidative activity similar to vitamin C with no toxicity to human skin fibroblast. The developed dietary supplement containing FOS extract from the grains has advantage such as anti-oxidative activity comparing with commercial products. It was produced from Thai plant which was cheaper than the imported FOS dietary supplements. Furthermore, It also have high efficacy for relieving digestive disorder. Hence, FOS extract has high potential to be developed to the dietary supplements and cosmetic products due to its prebiotic and anti-oxidative activities, respectively. 13
