Grow Immunity-Fighting Bacteria With Fibre A study published in Nutritional Research demonstrates the positive, immunity-boosting power of introducing the fibre inulin into your diet. Volunteers ingested 2.5 grams of inulin twice a day for four weeks, and results were measured against a group that received a placebo. In the inulin group, fecal bifidobacteria count increased, whereas no increase was observed with those taking the placebo. The researchers concluded that Even at doses as low as 2.5 grams twice a day, inulin can exert a prebiotic effect in healthy volunteers by stimulating bifidobacteria growth. IgA Short for immunoglobulin A, IgA is an antibody that plays a critical role in mucosal immunity, which provides you with protection from potentially harmful microbes. It can be found throughout the body, including tears, saliva, and the gastrointestinal tract. More IgA is produced in mucosal linings than all other types of antibodies combined. The British Journal of Nutrition published a study that evaluated the immune benefits of two specific probiotic strains, one of which was Bifidobacterium animalis ssp. lactis (BB- 12 ). Subjects consumed a capsule of the BB-12 which contained 109 colony-forming units of the bacteria once daily for six weeks and were given a seasonal flu shot after just two weeks. Compared to the placebo group, those who took the probiotic were shown to have a greater vaccine-specific secretory IgA. The probiotic helped the body produce additional amounts of IgA, which could help fight off the flu in the future. Tha study concluded that supplementation with BB may be an effective means to improve immune function by augmenting systemic and mucosal immune responses to challenge. A separate study published in the European Journal of Nutrition had similar findings with Lactobacillus rhamnosus, concluding that Probiotics induce an immunologic response that may provide enhanced systemic protection of cells from virus infections by increasing production of virus neutralising antibiotics. It is used in many processed foods because of unique characteristics, including a mild to slightly sweet flavour and the ability to be used to replace sugar, fat, and flour. In addition to providing digestive benefits, a study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition concluded that inulin significantly increases calcium absorption and enhances bone mineralisation in young adolescents. LEARN MORE: pubmed/ Bifidobacteria Bifidobacteria is a lactic acid bacteria, usually found in fermented foods like yogurt and cheese. It normally lives in the intestines and is considered friendly bacteria, helping the body break down foods and take in nutrients. Bifidobacteria also heps prevent the takeover of bad bacteria in the gut. Prebiotic According to the International Scientific Association for Probiotics and Prebiotics, prebiotics are considered to be selectively fermented, dietary ingredients that result in secific changes in the composition and / or activity of the gastrointestinal microbiota. Basically, prebiotics are food for the friendly microbes that live in the gut. When those microbes are fed properly, they can benefit their host. In order to benefit from a prebiotic, it must be able to withstand the harsh environment of the stomach.
